Title: Pre-Heresy Bits Guide

BigWill - January 15, 2008 10:18 PM (GMT)
here is the guide from the old forum
This is a guide to help anyone both new and old to the Forums by making a list of parts and links to make kickass Heresy Era Troops

The definitative armor guide

MK1 thunder Armor
The Red Scorp sgt chest w/ the aquila is also a modified mk1
The Head/w shades from the IG heavy weapon team + topknot from either orks or chaos make a good mk1 head

MK2 Crusade Armor
The only one I know about is this guy

MK3 Iron Armor
quite a few bits here
the Warsmiths body
The chest from the tac sprue with just the skull on it can be converted with some g/s
also the red scorp mk4 chest with the cables cut off too
The company champion head from the command sprue
and also the 2 from the black templar upgrade
5th row down 3,4, & 5
The heads from the Iron warriors have a few mk3's as well

MK4 Maximus Armor
The Red Scorpian upgrade kit(give you 10 chests and heads)
There is a head and body on the black templar sprue
1st row last on the right

MK5 Heresy Armor
there are also 2 heads on the chaos tac sprue that isn't quite mk5 its not quite mk7 either
also the assault marine chest with either g/s or guitar wire works well

MK6 Corvus Armor
otherwise know as the beaky has two main distiguishing factors the legs have no needpads and a left studded shoulderpad.
1 row second from left and 4th row 3rd from left
everything you need to make a set comes with the tac squad
the chest with the 4 cables is the one you want
top row second from left

For Pre-Heresy Weapons I find it easiest to buy these weapons sprues direct from GW

These two have good chainweapons

This one is very good Old stlye Plasma Pistol,Hand Flamer, and heresy era bolt pistol

This one is a Bolt Pistol with arms and shoulderpads

This one has 3 sets of Bolters,Backpacks,Blades, and shoulder pads

There are a few bits and bobs that this guide is missing, due to its age rather than anything else, and I was considering compiling a more thorough list of Pre-heresy and Heresy bits.

this link is always a WiP please feel free too add anything I missed,or is new.

Games Workshop Online Store

Top left. Good example of MkIII Iron Armour.

Top right. Good for use as an Emperor's Children commander (reminds me of Eidolon)

ShroudFilm - January 16, 2008 01:26 PM (GMT)
Never has one mini been so extensively used for a single character conversion! :D

I'm working on Eidolon myself right now - changing the gem into a claw, and thinking of [SPOILER ALERT!] modelling operation scars onto his throat/cheeks.

Weiss - January 16, 2008 01:32 PM (GMT)
Good idea man. Although, if you don't fancy chopping, you could always just paint them on...

Oh yeah, could we include links to tutorials for some things (ie: Terminator head conversions)?

Got no reply, so I'll assume this is ok... Feel free to move it if not.

Terminator heads:
This was posted for making plastic Grey Knights, but I think equally applies to us, though you'll probably want to remove some of the back of the helmet so it sinks into the suit then model a high rim around the collar using plasticard...

Terminator Shoulders: Some people like to use these:

Lord Mayger's Jump Packs:

follieslabour - January 18, 2008 05:41 AM (GMT)
Armour Variants:

High Marshall Helbrecht Mk3, also has the only Mk3 backpack in the GW range.
Chaplain Grimaldus Mk3
Daemonhunters Inquisitors easily converted into Mk2
Inquisitor Torquemada Variant Mk3
Space Marine Chaplain 2 Mk3
Chaplain Xavier Mk3
Masters of the Fleet Mk3
Space Marine Librarian Mk3
Blood Angels Honour Guard Tech Torso Mk4
Jump pack Chaplain Mk3
Emperors Champion Mk3

I may need to be corrected on some of the marks.

Weiss - January 18, 2008 12:28 PM (GMT)
Are you sure about all those? Helbrecht is certainly Mk2, and the emperor's champion is Mk7 with a few Mk8 modifications (armoured ventricular power lines). His helmet is a custom job. I don't think they're Mk3 just because they have a separate armour plate for the fron and rear of the legs... (looks more aesthetic to me...)

Top Left: good for converting into a Mk2 chest.
Top Middle: Similar to one shown in IA article for PH Luna Wolves and Sons of Horus.
Top Right: Mk5 Chaos variant.
Bottom Middle: a Mk 5 chest.
Bottom Right: Similar to the one shown in Ia article for PH Iron Warriors.

Similar to GW's current form of Mk3 chest, can easily be converted into familiar Mk3 design.

Top Left: Remove horns to turn into a Mk3 head.
Top Right: Remove horns to turn into a Mk2 variant, especially for Terminators or Thousand Sons.

Top, 2nd from Left: Good for Mk4a helmet conversion.
Top, 4th from Left (upside down): Good for Mk5 helmet.
Bottom, 1st from Left: remove horns for a Mk5 helmet.
Bottom, 3rd & 4th from left: both good basis for Mk4a helmet conversions.

BigWill - January 19, 2008 04:07 PM (GMT)
the bottom right also makes a great Nightlord as is ;)

Falkus Kibre - January 19, 2008 09:01 PM (GMT)
Nice guids.

ShroudFilm - January 21, 2008 01:19 AM (GMT)
That bottom right one also really reminds me of a Blood Angels chaplain from some 2nd edition artwork where the background was all flames and one of them was firing a flamer... it's a very cool sculpt.

Torg - January 21, 2008 12:17 PM (GMT)
Marneus Calgars Legs and Torso are always good to have in the
bitz box specially if your doing Primarchs,or look at Reaper mini's for a few
ideas only if you not doing tournament.(I've started on a wip of Mortarion
using Calgars legs and a few bitz here and there, even though I gotta
order Typhus's Manreaper!) ;)

Got these recently from ebay. The 2 axes on here can very easily be used for 1000 sons (with a little bit of jiggery pokery). They are a little on the large size so would be better for Terminators or true scale. I haven't used them yet so I can't comment any further than that :P.

Weiss - February 19, 2008 12:52 PM (GMT)
So where would you find those axes on Ebay?

ShroudFilm - February 20, 2008 12:08 PM (GMT)
Reaper Miniatures Weapons Packs, perhaps?

Iacton - February 20, 2008 02:35 PM (GMT)
QUOTE (Weiss @ Feb 19 2008, 12:52 PM)
So where would you find those axes on Ebay?

or community search them as unlucky sprocket

I also get many of the resin bases that I use from there

Look in the accessories section and you wil find them. Also they do loin cloths and furs and such. I haven't tried those yet but it's not expensive so I probably will have a dabble soon.

*tell's self to stop buying new stuff and paint what I already own*

By the way they are quite big! The big axe and sword are longer than a standard marine is tall!! I shall probably only ever use them for painting practice, or maybe if I true scaled a version of a primarch.

Weiss - February 20, 2008 02:50 PM (GMT)
My thanks again, Iacton. There's quite a nice selection on there.

Anodyr - April 17, 2008 03:37 PM (GMT)
I was having a look through this today (the section on Chaos Space Marine sprue bits is great!) and thought I should mention that most of the bit links at the top are now redundant since GW removed its bits ordering servive.

Also, dreadnought shinguards are a popular choice for terminator shoulderpads, but I dont see them mentioned above. What are the best sources for these (given that trying to find people with spares is something of a challenge)? Obviously a dread boxset (do you only get two with each dread or are there spares on the sprues?), and venerable dread (again, is it just two in the box). Also I believe you get one with the Dark Angels upgrade sprue. Are there any more sources for these?

Kaleb 'Angelus' Dante - April 17, 2008 04:33 PM (GMT)
I just bought 10 pairs of the dread shin pads from, I think I cleared their stock of them but if you check back next week they may have some more.

BigWill - April 17, 2008 04:49 PM (GMT)
Your right about both things
You cannot order the bits from the guide anymore
(I heard a rumor that we will be able to buy bits again in the future just not as big of a selection,And NO I am not talking about bits packs.
The rumor was GW is doing away with the Product line book and going paperless through thier site
And that bits will be returning but probally only the ones that sold well before all this happened.Hopefully my last minute $200 order of old weapon and backpack sprues will help keep them in the line up.)
Right now it has become more of a guide of what bits are out there.
If the rumor I heard was correct I will probally rewrite this whole sticky once they have links up.

And yes dred shins make excellent Termie sholders you can find them in the drednaught box and also the Dark Angels Vehicle upgrade but those will require some scraping as the have DA iconography on them.

Heya peeps,
It's been a long time since I posted on the Pre-Heresy forums. I'm the guy that did all the primarchs for Games Day Los Angeles last year. My brother is a wiz at making classic-inspired models out of bits. He made a "Custodes" tank at the last Games Day.
Check out his tank and my illustration here.
This year he entered again and actually won gold in the conversion contest! My brother's entry and award. Hope you check it out!

Can someone bring this up to speed vis a vis the new Space Marine releases - especially the new Veterans and such? I'm not sure if the last box of Veterans have been covered by this either, or indeed even if the Masters of the Chapter have been...

Actually this needs quite an overhaul now, what with alot of those links towards the beginning being obsolete since the re-shuffle of bitz and the US Webstore.

BigWill - September 11, 2008 02:01 PM (GMT)
Well of the bat
SGT Chronus........mk3

most of the metal vets are in MK7 with differnet helmets(good for seige of terra and later)

The sternguard has a true mk6
The Vanguard has a mk6
The new Sicarus will make an excellent capt all you have to do is cut off the horsehair and glue it on top of a crusade/beaky helm
The heads are separate so this should be an easy, east conversion that anyone should be able to do

Whitehorn - September 11, 2008 02:41 PM (GMT)
I'm very tempted to make a mini site with the pics... as none of your links work for non-US again :(

BigWill - September 11, 2008 03:32 PM (GMT)
TBH This is a very outdated guide
I made it back in the day when you order bits and the links were the same for both coasts.
I am on sick leave this month,I'll get to updateing it and have a new guide by next week
I have to ask Shroud if its ok to just post the product pics if not I'll make links to both US and UK.

Whitehorn - September 11, 2008 04:22 PM (GMT)
Up to you buddy, I was thinking something like this:
