Title: SQ's Luna Wolves
Description: Lupercal!

SQ - June 27, 2008 08:31 PM (GMT)
Huhu,

First things first
As more bits and pieces arrive by package every day I feel that now is the right time to start with this Blog.
I started this 'project' about 2 months ago, finally making up my mind about wether or not I should start a Pre-Heresy army. I did, and descided it would be the Luna Wolves! I started looking online and after a couple of less fortunate google searches I ended up with this forum. So let me start of by saying that without you guys I prolly couldn't have pulled this one off the way I want to;'A Legal Pre-Heresy army that is correct fluffwise and also stands a chance in a tourny'.
I want to thank you guys for helping me out with all this (I'm still a newbie )!!

I'll be using this blog to keep you guys up to date with what I'm currently working on (and what's coming up) but also a way for myself to see how I improve and which things could be better!

Army thoughts
Ok, so it was gonna be Luna Wolves! Horus, the Mournival, all important bits in any Luna Wolves army! The most important thing for me is that I just want to have fun with this army and learn how to properly play with it (besides being a PH newbie I'm also a SM newbie ).
This army will be based around the time right after the Ullanor Campaign, right before the Luna Wolves turned into the Sons of Horus, so basically around the time of the first couple of HH books.

Army composition
I want to try and convert as much as possible, giving me a lot of options to choose from when forming an army.
Models in Green are completed
Models in Blue are assembled
Models in Yellow still miss some bits (and have butterknives SHHH! :ph43r:)
Models in Red are on the wishlist

Horus (working on the legs)
The Mournival
Terminator Squad
Tactical Squad #1
Assault Marines
Land Speeders (2 out of 3)
Jet Bike Squad (2 out of 6 ordered)

More coming soon...

Terminator Squad
1 out of 5 assembled

user posted image

Mr. Termi #1, I kinda put this one together (coz I am still missing bits for my other models), his 3 brothers are also all assembled BUT they are still missing their heads (packages in the mail as we speak).

I removed all the Crux's and Eagles, filed off all the detail on the breastplates and put the Luna Wolves symbol up there (right now they look like 'Star-Marines' :P but will work out once painted! ;)). I added the collar pieces to all the Terminators and at first used the Barrel-look as shoulderguards, I didn't like them, however, so I removed them and placed these on instead. I just need to clean up a couple of small details and add the leather straps underneath the shoulderguards and this one is going to the paintshop!

His Squad will consist of:
3 Terminators with a Powerfist and a Stormbolter
1 Terminator with a Powerfist and a Heavy flamer

The other Terminator out of the box is being converted to Horus atm (Truescaling it :D) but that's another story!

BIG FAT DISCLAIMER:
The idea for the shoulderpads & collar piece is NOT mine! :P They were done following THIS tutorial! Thanks and kudos given to the peeps @ 'From the Warp' for making this tutorial available for us!

Weiss - June 30, 2008 11:09 AM (GMT)
Looking good so far! I'm not too sure about the detailing on the shoulders (they strike me as too EC-ish for Luna Wolves). And nice start on the legion symbol. Keep up the good work!

Iacton - June 30, 2008 12:18 PM (GMT)
Looks great SQ!

It looks like the tutorial is Ron Saikowski's work, who is a friend of the site, so he won't mind at all, especially because you have credited him already ;)

SQ - June 30, 2008 10:56 PM (GMT)
Huhu,

Thanx for the replies so far! :D I do indeed really like Ron's tutorial, it gives the Terminators a really nice look (again, I'm not a fan of the Barrel-Look:P)

4 out of 4 assembled
Anyways, I added the shoulderpads to 3 more terminators, so now they only need some leather straps and some studs/rivets before they get painted! :D

10 out of 10 assembled
While I was at it I also assembled my first tactical Squad, which gave me some equipment trouble...
I'm used to my Chaos list, so I field either 2 plasmas and a fist OR 2 meltas and a fist in my Slaanesh army.
However, me being new to Loyalist Space Marines, I found out that that is NOT an option in Codex: Space Marines, neither is there a Powerfist in a Tactical Squad box (which I find strange btw).

I didn't want to order a fist and wait for it to arrive so instead I figured that I might as well give my champ a Powerweapon (Serg. Haas of the Red Scorps was so generous to donate his to my champion) instead, and throw in a Missile Launcher and a Plasma gun along with that sword ;)
I never liked the Flamer/Missile Launcher combination, as it is most likely you'll only be using 1 of those weapons each turn.
All in all I'm quite satisfied with the endresult and like my Terminators I will paint these when my Studs/Rivets arrive through the mail! :D

I'll post some more (better) pictures tomorrow, but now ... BED :P

Weiss - July 1, 2008 06:54 AM (GMT)
Looking very nice! How did your Sergeant Haas' power weapon come out? I ended up cutting mine off because it was so bent... <_<

SQ - July 1, 2008 08:37 AM (GMT)
To be honest the powerweapon only needed a little bit of cleaning.
Some other bits however, the chestplates, were really fucked up... Most of those wires that run over the chest were broken or lost detail, in about 4 chestplates the scorpion symbol was so badly cast that it was hardly visible (Not that I care coz I'm cutting it off anyways, but still), I got 19 and a HALF shoulderplates (yup, HALF a shoulderplate) and there are a tremendous ammount of holes in the neckguards...

So yes, I was rather disappointed when I opened my package from Forge World, but oh well... nothing some Greenstuff can't fix ;)

Weiss - July 1, 2008 09:13 AM (GMT)
man, that's an instant return... or your money back, they sound really bad! And I was complaining because the powersword was bent into a semi-cirble...

SQ - July 1, 2008 09:43 AM (GMT)
Huhu,

Nah, it's ok, I fixed it with Greenstuff...
All in all I wasn't very happy with this order from beginning to end, and the only reason why I don't return it is the simple fact that the delivery times take up way too much time and I wanna start this army already, so I fixed it myself :)
But to round up:
> Delivery time was 32 days
> FW did NOT reply on my email, asking what happened to my order, that I send on day 28!
> Below quality cast... which simply is not fair considering the price
> Broken bits

I send a complaint email, but I doubt anything will come from that :)
Oh well, better luck next time ;)

ShroudFilm - July 1, 2008 10:59 AM (GMT)
FW international is shocking... even FW in the UK is hard to get a reply.

Apparently you can heat up resin and reshape it - just boil some water and immerse any bent pieces until they become soft, then reshape as you wish. When it cools again it will hold the new shape.

The FW rep at Gencon told me that he had flattened out a Warhound leg plate to demonstrate this at another event once...

Weiss - July 1, 2008 11:06 AM (GMT)
Shall have to remember that next time (the blade is lost to the warp now (in my bits box that is... :D)). Cheers Shroud.

SQ - July 1, 2008 11:08 AM (GMT)
Huhu,

Aye, true, bending FW bits is actually quite easily indeed ;)
For my Emperor's Children's army I ordered the Rhino doors set 5 times and a set of Extra Armour. Especially the Extra Armour was really bend and twisted, but if you hold it underneith warm (not boiling, just a bit warm) water you can bend it in any shape quite easily :)
Some models actually require you to do this, like the FW Slaanesh Greater Daemon I believe, before assembly her hair/tentacles are just straight spikes that you need to curve out yourself :)

SQ - July 1, 2008 01:06 PM (GMT)

Land Speeders
2 out of 3 assembled

Time for another update! They still need a bit of assembly and work, but besides the cleanup they are almost done! ;)

The idea was to have 2-3 Land Speeders, with the Luna Wolves symbol on the hood of the Speeder. I wanted the lead Speeder to have the symbol spreaded out all over the hood and the smaller vehicles to have a smaller version on the left side.

I managed to get the shape of the Luna Wolves Legion down quite allright, but I have problems keeping the surface smooth, so basically I just need to clean that up a bit, add an Assault cannon and a Heavy Bolter and this one can and get some paint too!

Jet Bike Squad
1 out of 6 assembled

The Jetbike Squad is a different story, 1 is almost done, but I still need to convert the rider, put some greenstuff in the gaps and fix the Plasma cannon mount at the bottom.

Thoughts and comments are always welcome! :D

Huhu,

Too much free time etc HAHA LOL!

Thanx for the replies everyone! :D

The Wolf's head still needs some work, still has some bumpies etc that I need smooth out, and I need to attach the weapons, hopefully that'll be done tomorrow :D

Weiss - July 1, 2008 01:45 PM (GMT)
Looking great! Can't wait to see whole squadrons!

I believe there is a tutorial that might help you with future projects: Doghouse's Actual Scale Marines

Skip most of the way down, until you see a picture of a sculpting tool and some vaseline. That's the bit you need. ;)

Magos Explorator - July 1, 2008 04:03 PM (GMT)
Nice wolf head on the speeder!

Thnx for the advice!
I already got the sculpting tool set, but I also bought one of those 'brushes' with a rubber stamp thingy at the end, kinda like an eraser! Works really well to smooth out the GS, especially with the Vaseline!

Thanx mate, though I'm kinda worried that once I undercoat the model it'll come out horrible, but oh well :)

Anyways! New update! :D

I got my rivets in the mail the other day (God, they ARE tiny :() and I managed to finish a terminator and a marine in Power Armour! but I'm not 100% sure if I got the color right so I did a test model instead :)
The model is far from finished (it's still quite messy) but it does give you a generally good idea on the color of the white/grey.
The armour looks a bit whiter than it actually is coz I had to flash, but tomorrow I'll take some better pics when I finish the model :D

ALSO!
I was toying with the idea of kitting out all my assault marines in MK3 armour so I started working on the torso and the legs of one of 'em, following Big Will's tutorial!
Next to him I got MR Horus himself, but he's still heavily MIP! (model in progress :P)

Huhu,

Haven't been able to get a lot of painting done the last couple of days, but I did manage to slap some basic colors on my landspeeder, throw some washes on my tactical marines and make a tiny start on a Terminator! :D

I love your white, it looks great, and the termi is coming along nicely. Can't wait to see more!

Kharn - July 7, 2008 06:45 PM (GMT)
Looking ace SQ!!

Can't wait to see this whole army painted!

Btw, how'd you do those bases? I had an idea of something like that for my Istavaan Death Guard, but I couldn't figure how to make bases like that.

Again, excellent work!

Dargor - July 7, 2008 07:23 PM (GMT)
Those bases are from Micro art studio Kharn, they are called Temple Bases.I use the same for my EC,they are great for representing the Precentor's palace after the bombardment.

SQ,those are some of the best Luna Wolves i've seen to date.Keep up the good work!

SQ - July 7, 2008 07:30 PM (GMT)
Huhu,

Thanks a lot for the compliments people, gives me more motivation to keep going at these :D

Aye, they are indeed from Micro Art studios ;)
TBh, I've seen a lot of people using them (3 on this forum already), but I think that perhaps they are not THAT popular coz if you want to use them on an entire army it can become a bit pricy :(

GW Marines + FW MK4 + Micro Art bases + Various bits = Double the price of a normal marine for a Pre-Heresy one :P

Though, if you are interrested, check out their store HERE!

The Forgeworld website clearly states that they are unable to answer emails, so you unfortunately will not get a reply if you have just emailed them.

If you phone them direct however, you will get an excellent reply and customer service.

I've had several things that have either been wrong, incomplete, mismoulded or just plain broken. The staff at Forgeworld have always been extremely helpful and apologetic; plus they usually tell you to keep all the defective parts and send you replacements ontop! What more could you want??!!!

If the parts are substandard then you really shouldn't have to make do,especially as you say with the money that you lay out for them.

Try ringing them tommorrow, I'm sure that you'll be pleasantly surprised.

SQ - July 7, 2008 09:58 PM (GMT)
Huhu,

Thnx for the advice Vesp :)
However, I think it might be too late for that, I already assembled and undercoated all the bits.
All the defects were fixed with GS so if they tell me to send it in then I'm afraid I'll have basically no case :P

It's quite allright, Next time I won't put up with that kind of quality anymore, but for now I'm just happy that I could finally start painting some models :D
I've got 1500 pnts worth of sprues and bits laying around, I just wanna get this army up and painted ASAP so I can start playing with it! :D

SQ - July 16, 2008 04:39 PM (GMT)
Huhu,

Well, my first Tac Squad is just about done! :D It just needs a bit of cleaning up and some highlights here and there! ;)
I DO have to completely redo my banner, my 000 series 7 had a close encounter with the cat today :( It did stand a chance :( So instead I had to use some old dusty GW brush I still had laying around somewhere... needless to say, it didn't work out! :P

Weiss - July 17, 2008 06:38 AM (GMT)
I'm really liking that nice clean paintjob, and the power weapon looks great too. Can't wait to see an army of these guys!

Iacton - July 17, 2008 09:14 AM (GMT)
They look yummy!!

Lovely work SQ!

Looks like there's a few small conversions that ties them all together nicely.

Would also like to see close ups of a couple of the models.

Tarik Torgaddon - July 17, 2008 10:17 AM (GMT)
Looks very nice there SQ; And I second that a few close ups would be great.

The Red Sorcerer - July 17, 2008 10:19 AM (GMT)
They are looking very nice indeed. Very good white-grey colour that is perfect for the LW. Liking the conversion work on the landspeeder as well.

Oh, and I'm sure you saw this coming... close ups please! :D

SQ - July 17, 2008 02:05 PM (GMT)
Huhu,

Thanx for the kind replies everyone :D Those kinda things really keep me motivated on this army! :D

Ok, so as promised, 2 closeups :P
I still need to do a little bit more work on the banner and some touching up here and there, but it's just about done :)

Did anyone else get a Gollum impression from Iacton's comment? :D

Looks great! Though the fogie is right, you need to stomp on that mouldline as soon as possible!

SQ - July 18, 2008 04:48 PM (GMT)
Huhu,

How could I have missed that one?! :|
I hate killing mouldlines afterwards! :(

Anyways, thnx for the replies! :D Glad you like 'em :D

I managed to finish up my first Landspeeder too! :D
He prolly still needs some work here and there, but I've been looking at it WAY too long now, so I'll prolly see some thing that need fixing tomorrow :P
