What type of fish is your favorite? What type rod and reel do you use to fish with?
I like to trout fish. I started out with a Cherrywood 6' ultralight with a Mitchell Avocet reel.
I got into fly fishing for trout a few years back but, never really got serious about it until just recently.
I started with a Shakespeare 8' 5-6 wt. rod and reel from WalMart. Then I got a Pflueger purist 8' 5 wt. with a Pflueger Medalist reel.
Mostly trout as well. I've used so many rods over the years that I can't tell you what I started with. I think it was a Daiwa 5'6" ultralight with some reel that I can't remember. Now a days I prefer my Rapala crappie rod. It's 8'6" long and has a Gander Mountain reel on it. Great set up that allows me to use 2 lb. test line if I want. It wont fit behind the seat of my truck though so I haven't used it much recently. Now I use a 5'6" Cherrywood with a cheap real and my current favorite a 6'6" Uglystick with an Okuma reel. It's a good setup that will last a lifetime if the reel holds up. As far as fly fishing goes I started with the same setup as you but have moved to a Reddington 7.5" 4 weight rod. It's good for tight streams and the like but I had to drastically shorten my leader length.
I like them Cherrywood rods they are nice. I also have a ugly stick but, it's a bass pole. I don't use it much. I mostly use ultralight or my fly rod. I also have a 6'6 muskie pole. I don't use it either. I'm more of a trout fisherman than any thing. I have fished it all but, always come right back to trout. :fishing:
I consider myself a multi species angler but I spend most of my fishing time chasing smallmouth bass.
My absolute favorite technique for catching a bass is fishing a hollow body frog in the slop, lillies, and weeds of a pond, those explosive hits on the frog are addictive.
My favorite rods are the old Mitchell Fulcrum Pro rods and my favorite reels are Abu Garcia Ambassaduer baitcasters.
