Does Wenger need to pay up for a major superstar?

henry5 - April 14, 2008 06:40 PM (GMT)
Yep. The question is WHO?

He's already stated that he doesn't buy them, he makes them. He needs to sort out morale on the team. Gallas was a bad buy. Incessant whiner, self-centered, primadonna. Definitely shouldn't have the captain's armband.

I say sell Gallas while he still has something left on the pricetag, open up the kitty and buy Messi. His style would work very well with Arsenal and he is nowhere near his prime. Then buy a physically AND emotionally solid defender.

I hope you mean a Messi type player (of which there aren't many). Why would Messi even consider going to Arsenal. Now a player like RIbery might be willing to make that move. I say might, considering he just moved to Germany. I do think he needs to get a get an older player with championship run type experience. Probably needs to go get a couple players this summer. Winger, defender and striker.

Arsenal seems to have been in a "rebuilding" mode for the last couple of years. Those who follow the EPL more closely than I do, are those players set to lead the team to a long run, or are they not quite there yet?

You saw the answer to that question this week. Twice. They blew it, big time.

Wenger didn't make Overmars. He didn't make Lehmann. He didn't make Bergkamp. He didn't make Sol Campbell. On top of that, he also inherited quite a few guys who were big parts of his success over the years. Merson, Adams, Keown, Seaman, Wright, Platt...

So, in reality, he never "completely built" anything. In this day and age, nobody does. Buying shrewdly and buying known players at top dollar has always been part of his M.O.

He needs to get over himself and buy some players. Right now, what's killing him most is his back line. Put out some pennies and shore up a back line that won't throw away leads against mortal enemies when EVERYTHING is on the line.

Word has it that Senderos is done for he season - "Emotionally shattered". Stop thinking you can build it all. You can't. You haven't before. Stop thinking it's "your way".

just like Graham to jump on the bash Wenger band wagon( :D :D just kidding)

a good team needs a few superstars that not only control the game but inspire their teamates to make it work..
probably not so much superstars, but I think Wenger needs a few players with experience.

He will always try to find players that fit the mold at Arsenal... somethings that good, and well sometimes that is bad..

remember we have had players that were considered "potential" superstars when they came to play for us.. and well there not there anymore (Reyes comes to mind)

It's time for the boys to Man up. They've had a lot of time to grow up, now act that way.

Only if he can get them at a steal and turn them around at a hefty profit when they turn 28 years old.

RaDragon - April 15, 2008 10:45 PM (GMT)
Yes but who really counts as a superstar today?

Landon Donovan would come relatively cheap.

No in short. But it wouldn't hurt obviously... Wenger has said he is looking to buy one "experienced" player, whatever that means. David Villa has been linked with him and he is a player i can see doing particularly well at Arsenal. The problem with Arsenal is not quality in their first team. They outplayed Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool this season in the PL. They just miss a cutting edge and depth. Unlike Liverpool who i think have depth but not enough quality. Vela and Merida should be available or ready to play next year on the wings and actually offer some width unlike the horrible Eboue.... Walcott with a season under the belt perhaps could develop more. They need midfielders that contribute goals (ala Ljungberg and Pires). At the back Toure has looked poor since returning from Africa and persisting with him at RB and not the fore mention Eboue baffles my mind. I've also heard links with Metzelder for CB position and Arsenal still have Djourou who has been injured since returning from Birmingham.

God that's scary! Cesc scare me!

No you don't need a superstar. They need to find the right guy star or not. And I think Pete said they need a Torres. But they have one in Adebayour. He's got 20 goals this year right behind Torres. That's not to say they don't need scoring. But star power won't get the job done they need skill that can get the job done, superstar or not. And play Walcott down the middle.
