One day she wouldn'tlive so far away from him. Roland had been thinking about the apartments near his, deciding whether the one meant to house the queen was in fact good enough for his Dianne. It was, his head of staff had convinced him. Many queens had lived there and none of them had found very much to complain about. And best of all, it was untainted by that poisonous Black Widow. No, thankfully he and Rhiann had always lived as far apart from one another as possible, which meant that...well, Roland's wing of the castle was void of her depressing essence. It was all clean. All read. All just waiting for the days when they would be but a step from eachother's doors.

But not yet. For now Dianne had the same rooms as before and much closer to Rhiann's than his own.

But the dark shadow was gone, and an hour or so after Dianne had been welcomed back in the throne room - a terrible, horrible hour of fetching the news and making small-talk with semi-useful nobles so that talk wouldn't arise (or at least not more talk than was necessary) - Roland had finally been able to detach himself from the gossip lane and come here.

Even an hour was cutting it a bit close...but he had to see her.

Four guards flanked him as he walked (that Regesvard seemed hell-bent on sticking with him) but he dismissed them at her door, shedding them. Did they really need to announce to the entire world that the king was in Dianne's bedroom? No, he thought not. And so they went off in search of better things to do or more inconspicuous places to stand.

And he...knocked on the door.

Dianne had sat in her rooms, collecting herself. No one had visited her to welcome her back - Dianne could understand the wariness of the other courtiers; she was not on friendly terms with many of them, and those she did count as friends knew to leave her well alone when she was tired, for fear she would snap.
The only company she had was for a servant to bring food and drink, which had been left untouched on her table.
Dianne stood again and paced her room, her heart speeding and nerves sparking in her restlessness. All she had wanted for this past month or so was to return to this place that was home. But now she was here she fretted, it was not the home she was used to. Her mistress was banished, and her own position was in question. What should she do with her days now? Should she still act as the (almost-) queen's lady-in-waiting and serve the royal family and be little better than household staff? Should she return to her birthright and be a lesser lady on the outer circles of the Court? Or should she start to forge a new path now that she was to be the future queen - or was that too presumptuous a step?
She sighed, the constant thoughts making her head ache. Dianne ran her fingers through her (blessedly clean and freshly washed) blonde hair. She sat down by her dresser and started to undo the braid thad kept her hair out of her eyes, anything to relieve the tension across her head.
Her eyes moved to the door as a quick knock sounded out.
"Enter?"
She called out, her command rising in pitch to sound almost like a question. Wondering who would dare come.

He hardly had to wait before a voice, that sweet voice, beckoned him, "enter". He did not notice immediately that she did not sound entirely at ease. No, Roland was a bit to eager to lay a true eye upon his lover - no longer a simple mistress - and to speak to her openly the yearnings of his heart. It had been long, far too long, and everyone had been so busy and so many dangerous things had and were occurring and...he just wanted to take a moment and be simple again. Wasn't love the simplest thing of all?

Well, some might disagree.

Taking a breath, Roland reached for the door's handle and laying two fingers upon it's "L" shaped curve, applied enough pressure that it clicked open.

As soon as he entered, Roland noticed the quiet of the room - largely a lack of servants or staff of any sort. A fact so rare and uncommon in these castles...usually What Roland wouldn't do to walk into his own room and find it so barren. But for Dianne? N, he was not happy with this for Dianne. She knew, surely, how servants swarmed the kings and queens and most import - oh...oh, right. She was only his fiancee to him...

Of course...no one knew...

And yet, still. Wasn't there a single friend who had missed her?

Roland raised a brow and looked once around the room before silently closing the door behind him and looking a bit hopefully in Dianne's direction. "You keep a quiet room!

Dianne looked up as the door opened, entirely wary of who was coming to see her. She quickly smoothed down her hair and dress to make sure she was presentable.
Her visitor was no surprise, but still her breath caught as she saw him enter. Dianne remained seated, her eyes finally able to turn to him and drink him in fully without fear of an audience. Roland looked different than the last time she had seen him. More confident, had he truly adapted to being king now? And... he looked... happy. Dianne had never seen him look so at ease. And it wasn't just here and now, she had thought so in the throne room earlier this afternoon. But then what should she expect, he had just rid himself of the main source of poison in his life.
Dianne finally stood as he spoke to her. She refrained from curtseying, she had done that earlier when she had gone to the King as a lady of court. Right now Roland was here as a lover, and Dianne would treat him thus.
Her hands gripped the top of the chair behind her as Dianne shivered. She was torn between being furious at him, and wanting to throw herself into his arms.
" No more than normal."
She replied. Then realised that Roland had bever been to her chambers before - that had always been too dangerous. No, their liaisons had always taken place in his, or whatever anonymous rooms they could find. Was he expecting her to be surrounded like his wife had been? But what company was she supposed to keep, she was a lowly and anti-social (well, not especially anti-social, just a regular bitch). And she had just been away for many weeks - what friends she had were distanced.
Dianne let go of the chair and in only a few swift strides she covered the room to stand before him. Her smoke-coloured eyes flashed blue, and her hand raised to swipe harshly across his cheek.
"A week! You swore a week - you abandoned me!"
Her once beautiful voice came out in a strangled scream, fearful of who might hear if she let out all the anger that had built up.

Indeed, he had never been here with her. He had never even seen the inside of her rooms until she had left, and out of curiosity he had stopped by them once - under the pretense, of course, of seeing what (if anything) anyone had found there. Without her, they had been uninspiring and usual. But now, even if she was the only one bringing light to the room, they seemed much more...well, Dianne.

He was glad that she did not curtsy, although he couldn't ever say that he held that point of view against her, as he much preferred her in her informal manner. Sure, she was grace and propriety and swift glances out there. But in here, in any room where it was just him and her...she was so much more!

Roland raised a brow curiously as she made quickly for him, and had just begun to open his arms, expecting to embrace her finally...when something he altogether had not expected happened. Suddenly, very suddenly, and following the sharp sound of a snap, Roland's left cheek was stinging and very soon turning red.

His head turned slightly to his right, reacting to the unexpected blow, and his arms quickly folded behind his back as he remained like that for a moment, putting together what had happened. She had slapped him. Yes, and now she was quite literally screaming at him. Unhappily.

He frowned slightly and the muscle in his jaw flexed as he straightened his head, looking at her. Ah, she was furious, wasn't she? But she was so confident that he wouldn't hold that hit against her, wasn't she? Roland could think of a hundred kings who would have shown her out of the castle right then.

But maybe they had less to lose.

Maybe they were much less attached to their bed-mates. He had known her many years, now, after all.

Swallowing slowly, Roland quickly collected his expression and relaxed his arms from behind him. For a moment he only looked at her, his dark eyes burning with an equal but much subdued intensity, before he reached out swiftly with his left, searching for her waist. Maybe she was furious. Maybe she deserved to be furious! But nothing could dampen the fact that she was alive, and well, and free for him to finally... enjoy openly.

If she did not react quickly enough - or at all - he had snatched her body forward towards his, kissing the mouth that expressed such displeasure in him.

Dianne had been expecting some sort of reply, an apology or explanation or something. She didn't even think about the mistresses of kings in the past, and how they had been removed from court for such disrespect; all she thought of was the man, the lover that had abandoned her once. And even if he banished her from court, she would return to her family's estate. The Astley estate was small and poor compared to her life and luxury in Dunsmore and the royal palace, but it was still an improvement to the poverty and torture she had had to bear for so long.
But not a word was given despite the desperation in her voice, and the need in her eyes. Instead, faster than she could follow, his arm encircled her and drew her near, his lips searching hungrily for hers. Dianne tried to ignore how his arm felt so fitting to her back, and how familiar the conours of his torso felt against hers. She raised her hands and tried to swat him away, hitting her fists against the press of his chest, though her hits were ineffective, and only got weaker as her will to be angry at him disappeared entirely.
She returned the kiss, getting lost as her lips fought his and her teeth grazed against them. Then she pulled back a fraction to catch her breath.
"I've missed you."
She confessed, no further sound of displeasure in her voice.
Dianne lost no time in bringing him to her lips once more, her hands curling around the base of his neck. The thought that she would be coming back to him, to this, was all that got her through the many long days.
Dianne broke away again, and looked up at him fiercely.
"Promise you'll never send me away like that again."
She demanded. She would rather face death than suffer the life of a peasant again. A hint of anger returned to her, it would be a while yet before Dianne completely forgave Roland for saving her life.

Her hands beat at him, her fists, smaller than his own, banged out a heavy thump against his chest, but however hard she tried she would never be able to match the pace of his heart. He held her tight to his body, pressing her against him as he sought the kiss he had yearned for...

Her hands slowly left off trying to make him back off and grew still as she seemed to allow herself to accept the moment. He could understand her fury, really, he could, but there was just too much joy inside of him for it to take hold. There just wasn't any room for her anger; just her embrace.

Her teeth grazed his mouth and Roland frowned at the pleasure of such simple intimacy before she pulled away from him...and, well, he supposed that was okay because he did in fact need to breathe, as well.

He agreed with her admission, even if she didn't give him time to say so, and sighed in near bliss as she lifted her arms to his neck and kissed him again. He replied joyously, holding nothing back for the sake of propriety or otherwise, and in fact wrapped his right arm around her as well, pulling her even tighter against him.

If he could hold her this way forever and never let her go, he thought that he would die a happy man.

Gah! She broke the kiss again!

He bit his lip as he silently heard her words, licking the taste and feel of her mouth from it. Slowly he leaned in, bowing a little to press his mouth and nose into the crook of her jaw. Like this, his hold became a bit more of an honest hug.

"I can't promise not to protect you...

Dianne tilted her head back as he nuzzled in to her neck, the phantom trace of his lips on her skin there. She sighed, her eyes closing at this simple pleasure, being in the arms of the man she loved. She shivered, thrilled to be here, but suddenly very nervous. All Dianne had ever known was the passion of affairs, she suddenly felt very daunted at caring for a man all day and all night. Oh, she knew very well how to please a man, but was completely lost when it came to being innocently affectionate.
When Roland finally spoke, refusing to promise what she asked, Dianne tensed and pulled back enough to force his attention.
"I mean it Roland. Protect me if you must, but I will never forgive you if you abandon me like that again."
She said stubbornly. It was how she saw it, her lover and her fiancee (the word still seemed alien), had promised to send her away for only a week. But without warning she had been left their to rot for much, much longer.
For so long she had been an independent woman, relying on her own intelligence and wealth; now she found it unsettling how she could put herself in Roland's care. Dianne didn't know if she could cope with him abandoning her.
She sighed, and moved closer to him again, her head nestled near his shoulder as her hand moved up to rest over his heart, before pushing up to the collar of his shirt, the tips of her fingers brushing against his neck.
"Did I miss anything exciting while I was gone?"
She asked, her voice soft once more. There was no point in continuing to stress at him, she had made her point, now she just wished to enjoy his presence.
Her eyes moved up his face until they caught his.

He frowned in a concerned manner as she pulled away and spoke to him gravely, bowing his head slightly as he listened. He could not make that promise. He could not promise to do something that might lose him his one remaining joy. But he could promise to use that as a last and outstanding resort. That he could do.

I am sorry that you felt abandoned.” he sighed as she rested her head and hand upon his chest, adjusting his arms accordingly around her. “I thought of you every day, and cursed that it was forced to take so much longer than I had hoped…I just could not risk –” he stopped, shaking his head slowly as her fingers brushed at his throat – a perfect opportunity, it seemed, for Dianne to steer them elsewhere.

Well,” he crooned slowly, his voice still lingering in the depression of her anger, “As I am sure you have heard, I am an unmarried man. The A’erians annulled it.

Dianne sighed as her lover finally apologised, she had rarely made any efforts or sacrifices for previous affairs. She hoped that Roland was aware of just how far she had gone for him. But at least he went on to express how he'd missed her.
Dianne leant forwrds and placed her lips tenderly against the skin of his throat as he spoke, her delicte fingers continuing to trace the line of his collar.
"I was so worried that you would find another to comfort you, and prefered them..."
Dianne confessed, her eyes moving up to find his, making sure that he was not upset by her words (or made guilty by them).
"I... I had a lot of time to think."
She murmured. Yes, a lot of time. It was amazing how many scenarios her bright little mind had come up with while she was stuck in that hovel, deprived of all information. It was easy for her to believe that Roland would surrender to the temptation of another. There were so many beautiful ladies that sought his favour, and Dianne envied them as she lived in squalor, becoming increasingly filthy.
Dianne's lips turned down in a slight frown as Roland told her of the biggest change in the capital. She hesitated before answering. Even though she had chosen Roland, and knew that her loyalty to Rhiann was over, it was hard to shrug off so many years of obedience and respect.
"I heard. Lord Thorne told me, though I can scarce believe it. What is the fate of the Duch- I mean, Lady Danum?"
Dianne asked, unsure whether she wanted to know the answer. Dianne knew all of the sins Rhiann had committed, but she still did not want her ex-employer and mentor to be killed. But then, if she were sent to the convent, as long as she lived she posed a threat to Dianne, Roland, and any children they would have.
"And how long do you intend to be a bachelor, my lord?"
She asked, knowing that she brought out many questions - but she had to catch up! And she needed to know, how much longer was she to be a single woman, if indeed he still intended to marry her now that he was free to chose.

Roland lifted his chin slightly as Dianne brought her lips to his throat. They were light and sweet, laid on thickly and warm, and brought to him a comfort and desire strengthened by the absence. He had missed her, yes, very much. Hell, in the grand scheme of things it hadn't even been all that long! But oh, with her fingers playing close to his collar, her lips upon his throat and her bodice pulled tight to him...yes, he had certainly missed her.

As she expressed her fears about him being tempted away, Roland shook his head slowly and took a long, deep breathe that filled his body, pressing them momentarily closer. There were, indeed, a few young, beautiful women who had always tried to gain Roland's attention. They were the same ones who always (though with somewhat less zeal now as Roland had never entertained them) pursued him. They had served as Rhiann's ladies in waiting - most having in fact joined into her service for a go at the king. But he hadn't touched them. Don't get him wrong, Roland had let the thought cross his mind once or twice, but the truth was that...he didn't want all of that anymore. It had been a long time since hed been the court Casanova and a few years yet that he had come to satisfy himself with Lady Astley, alone. They were pretty, yes, but they were not for him.

"I had no other." he managed to rush out a bit breathlessly at the sudden realization that he hadn't had any anything in that time...

Thankfully his thoughts were briefly distracted by her slew of questions. Tilting his head down again, he bent to take his turn at kissing her, resting his lips on her forehead and then planting a row one after the other towards her left ear - a slow kiss placed in pauses of his response. Lady Danum - is on a well-deserved - and extended - vacation.... he was at her ear now, and pressing his nose against and his cheek once more to hers he gave a soft nuzzle. [/b]She left today.[/b], he spoke softly, closing his eyes.

And... he pulled back, loosening his grip on her as he looked for her eyes, Between you and I, I hope that I will not be a bachelor for long. I don't intend upon it...seeing as I have a certain beautiful woman already in mind.

Dianne was presently appeased that Roland had had no other women in her absence. She didn't know whether or not he was speaking the truth, but it meant something that he was making it sound like she was the only one.
She turned her up to his, hoping to catch his mouth with hers, but instead her lover pressed his lips to her forehead, and tenderly proceeded to delicately kiss her features. Dianne closed her eyes and sighed, more than content at his attention. She rested her body against his strong frame, completely his.
A part of her threatened to rear up and be cold and distant as he spoke of Lady Danum, Dianne could not completely shrug off how she felt when Roland was negative about Rhiann. And it worried her that her previous mistress was still alive, still dangerous; but she was partly pleased that the woman she had long admired was still a part of this world. But for now Dianne pushed these thoughts aside, telling herself that there was nothing but her and Roland in the world. They were alone in her chambers, she really did not have to be worrying about his ex-wife.
And it did not take much to distract her. After weeks of solitude, her pulse was racing at Roland's light kisses, and her skin was hot and impatient beneath his touch.
Dianne smiled, her full lips almost pouting playfully as Roland pulled back and spoke of his brief singledom. She reached up and pressed her fingertip against his mouth, attending the lips that had been teasing and flattering her.
"That is well, I doubt anything we have will be secret again. But... when we are officially engaged... I hope we do not have to be pious and chaste before marriage?"
Dianne broke out into a real smile, although she hoped this would not be the case. She brought up onto her tiptoes and pulled him down to meet her lips.

Dianne may not have been able to pocket away or abolish the strange feelings she had concerning Roland's hate for Lady Danum, but then she could surely understand how he, too could not abandon his feelings for that woman. And surely Roland had far stronger a motive for his feelings than Dianne. It was not Dianne, after all, after whom Rhiann had hunted.

His lips parted as she placed her finger against them and he tried, perhaps unsuccessfully, to nibble or suck at the tip of her digit. As she spoke he fondled it with his mouth, if she allowed him, tasting her flesh flirtatiously, his eyes alight. Removing her hand forced him to stop - though an immediate answer was not her aim. Rather she pulled him in for another kiss, which he gave gladly - possessing her mouth.

But soon he had pulled away. Because he was reluctant to let go of her he moved his left hand up along her elbow, tracing down until he could grasp her hand. Guiding her, his fingers beneath hers, he moved towards her nearby sofa, intending to sit and pull her atop his lap.

As he walked he responded with a smirk. After all, her question was rather...bold. "Chastity... Is one strength I was never quite able to harness... he replied slowly. "Particularly under certain charms...

Dianne, I will need to speak to your father in short time, so that he might give you to me. I know that you have not lived with him for some years, but I would be your first husband and...there is no reason to build unrest between your family and...me.
"

Perhaps one day dianne would consider Rhiann under the same light as Roland, for now she was one of the hunted. Dianne had never thought herself to be in this position - removed from Rhiann's good graces and under threat. Or at least, she had never expected to live so long in this state. She had insulted her mistress so harshly, that she would not have been suprised to have her life ended within the hour of the discovery of her discretion. But no, it seemed that a living Lady Astley had some value yet. And Dianne was going to enjoy every minute of it from now on. Starting now.
Dianne smiled into the kiss that Roland returned, and Dianne could not help but think that this was no longer a forbidden pleasure (although it might be considered bold and almost sinful while they were unmarried), and one that she could enjoy at almost any time. She did not know if she were thrilled, or worried that the passion they shared might fade a little now there was less danger behind their affair.
Too soon Roland broke away from the kiss, but before Dianne had chance to object, he led her to the sofa, and she went with him more than willingly. She slid into his lap, kicking off her slippers, so her bare feet could press against his trouser leg. She shifted to make herself more comfortable in his lap, approving of how close they were. Going by previous meetings as a guide, she moved her deft hands down to the buckle of his belt and took a moment to release the bottom of his tunic. But as he spoke again she paused. She was so used to their rushed meetings being about physical enjoyment, that she wondered if he had something else on his mind, and how she was unpractised in anything else.
Just as Dianne had dampened the atmosphere by mentioning Roland's ex-wife; now it was Roland's turn by speaking of her father. The lady sat a little straighter, a little colder.
"If you wish, sir. Though following tradition or not, I cannot see our union distressing my family."
She replied, honestly wondering why he would make the effort. But then Roland had never met her family, had no idea about the small-minded Astley's that had long been blind to Dianne's achievements. Oh well, at least they would finally approve of her settling down and marrying, because as her mother pointed out, she was well past her prime and no man would put up with her sharpness if her beauty faded any more.
Dianne wondered whether her family would praise her for gaining the affections of the King, or would they kindly point out that he was an older man and they would only approve the marriage if she finally spat out a couple of kids. Not that she could ever catch up her brother and sister in her parent's eyes.

It pleased him to see that jumping to the more physical expression of how much he'd missued her wouldn't spark any sort of tirade corning how "that's all he saw her as." After all was it not she who was pulling even now at his tunic, yanking it free if his belt? He had not asked her to do so and he had not begged her to let them begin in this direction, yet here she was, sitting upon his lap, trying to strip him bare.

Her skirt, assisted by it's layers and petticoats arched in a high, green pillow above her lap, but when Roland placed his arm onto it, his fingers resting somewhere near where her corset and thighs met, it sunk into the material. He did like this bright green. Very much. It suited her wonderfully - but then her choice in jewel tones always had. Unlike his - Lady Danum, Dianne had always defied Rhiann with bold collies that had made her unignorable. Certainly after he had begun sleeping with her.

The smirk that had appeared at her antics, however dimmed as she grew cold, sitting up straight and addressing him in that distant manner she had, "sir."

She had never really explained to Roland her distaste for her family, and so her sudden clamming-up confused him. "Nor I - what's wrong? Do you think it wrong to try to avoid an further scandal? We are talk already for- how you ran from me. " Roland looked at her with an expression somewhat darkened. She hadnt wanted to forgive him for sending her away, but Roland still felt sour that she had tried so damned hard and run so willingly that day. She would have rathered to rot away in the pocket of Rhiann until that spider inevitably killed her for betrayal than to trust that he had nothing but her best interest in mind. "To not ask for you would only propagate the image that I have forced you into this.

This is Tetel’ac, where the women are capricious, the ale is usually tepid, and life is hard. Prince or pauper, the world is a dangerous place to play and the game of politics is far from voluntary. Whether you live in the gentle tropics, lush forests, harsh mountains, or expansive desert, every day is sure to spell adventure for those who live under the intruding thumb of the king, or amoung the hidden eyes of oh so many spies. With a kingdom on the brink of yet a second revolution, the future is a fragile thing indeed.
