 Shalinda at Grosvnersburg
Armando Bardas

The group passed through the security checkpoint at the gates, the Count's guards making sure there was not too much danger to letting the group in. They did not pay attention to the rowdy girl in the back whom, as Armando explained, was for Count Grosvner to see. He was informed Count Grosvner was not present, but that one of his siblings would see him. That was not the most ideal thing, but it was better than nothing.

The group carried on until they reached the Courtyard. It was there Armando dismounted, and went to help Shalinda out of the wagon. Only the two of them would be entering, without any of Armando's cronies. That said, there were a number of the Grosvnersburg guards escorting them. He looked at Shalinda, now he was without any range weapon, aside for the sword in his sheath. The guards were armed with spear like weapons, as well as swords.

He looked up at the large domed structure, it was certainly gigantic to be standing right before the estate. It was the largest, most expensive thing the General had seen in his life. The architecture was just breathe taking, and certainly did capture one's attention even if they were not generally into architecture. The passed through the large iron doors, and entered an entrance hall that was extremely large and elegant. The marble work was top-notch, the scent of exotic flowers filled the air, and he looked up at the ceiling of the dome. The ceiling of the dome was the painting of an elaborate map of Old Kelyea, back when it was independent and much larger than today. The Grosvners were certainly a bunch for nostalgia.

They were escorted up a large staircase, and then taken down many long halls. The group passed many fine paintings, tapestries, portraits, and elegant ornaments such as porcelain dolls, gold vases encrusted with jewels, statues, and busts as they made their way to a private study. A Lord approached them and informed them that Lady Ione Grosvner would soon be with them, and that they should make themselves comfortable in the room. A servant opened the door to dark room with a few leather armchairs, mahogany tables, and bookshelves with many books. There was a table against the way with a dozen bottles of wine, a platter with crackers and various cheeses, some sausage, some rye bread, butter, and fresh fruits. There was also an urn with fresh water if one wished water. The Lord shut the doors, leaving only Armando and Shalinda inside the clearly expensive room, with some of the food beckoning to be consumed.

Armando walked over and picked up a cracker. He placed a slice of cheese upon it, and then a cut sausage on top of that. He took a bite. "Not bad at all," he muttered to himself.

Apparently she was going to be doing some walking - something that she hadn't really done in a week since this whole mess started, so while the wagon was moving along to its destination up the hill, the woman was bending her legs in an effort to at least allow her to walk with some ease. She also tried using some of the clothing in the back to make herself look somewhat decent, eventually resorting to wrapping the larger piece around herself to create something like a dress...anything to prevent herself from having to be 'escorted' exposed. Even then, Shalinda still looked like a mess, so she tried to clean some of the grime from her face and straighten her hair a bit before the wagon stopped altogether, and Armando opened the back to 'assist' her out. She waved him off and got down on her own, wavering a bit in the process.

Slowly but surely she reluctantly followed Armando and their guide into the massive and beautifully decorated building, but Shalinda was more or less concentrating on staying on her own two feet at the moment to notice the paintings and jewels ad various sights of the building. Shown to a room and told to make themselves comfortable while their host - or hostess - joined them in a moment, the brunette got a whiff of something wonderful from the table and had slowly walked over to it, her stomach growling in protest at the sight of the various cheese, meats, and such spread out on the table. As much as she wanted to eat until she was satisfied, Shalinda wasn't going to make a fool out of herself, and even if she started, would Armando use that against her somehow? Eventually, the woman settled on a small cup of cool water and remained standing as far away from the 'general' as she could get, careful not to touch anything aside from the cup resting in her hands.

Ione Grosvner walked into the room, she was a middle-aged woman in her early forties. The woman stood about five feet, eight inches, and she wore an elegant white dress that made her appear to be in good shape, with large breasts. Her golden hair curled and waved down past her shoulders. Her skin was not as bronzed as some others, likely a result of the fact she stayed in often. Her skin was very soft, and almost youthful. She had a commanding, and stern look to her, there was also a foul aura about her.

She walked into the room and looked at the two people in there. She had been briefed on General Armando Bardas, and had received some instructions from her brother. "General, you failed your mission. You are dismissed and free of our service. Apparently, you have a knack for not getting the right name," she stated bluntly. In truth it was partially Ezra's fault for confusing some names too. "So with that said, please leave. Lord Black will escort you to Joseph, who will compensate you, and then you will leave."

Ione turned her gaze to the younger woman, who stood humbly back holding a glass of water. "Feel free to help yourself, I am sure you are starving. I am very sorry for what you have had to endure," she said, glaring at the General, and pointing for him to leave the room without even hearing him out.

The doors opened, admitting an older woman about twice her own age. Immediately she lowered her eyes to the floor, hoping to at least be 'unheard, unseen' for the moment, until the newcomer spoke up, outright dismissing the 'general' from service. Such an announcement almost caused Shalinda to let out a cheer in relief, but remembering where she was and who was around her, a sigh was what emerged from her mouth while watching as Armando Bardas departed the room, never to torment her again. Whatever deity is up there, be it Aalaam or A'er, thank you! Prayers do get answered! She thought to herself, before catching the woman's next set of words.

Somehow, the woman managed to show gratitude in her current state of attire by bending the knee in a bow/curtesy and a "Thank you, my lady..." was said as respectfully as her voice could muster before she made her way to the food-laden table. As carefully as possible, Shalinda acquired several small pieces of the breads, cheeses, and meats and tried to eat as gracefully as she could; her condition was horrid, but she was still a sheik's daughter and was still expected to show manners in another's home...especially someone whose house could very well be a palace. As for the apology given to her, she shook her head, and waited until her mouth was empty before replying, "No no, my lady. I realize that I caused some of the problems, but I really did want to help...to at least repay the debt I owe." The brunette glanced down at herself and blushed in shame; she really did look awful compared to this elegant woman. "I really should apologize for my current state; if need be, I can clean up whatever mess I made on your pristine floors and be on my way..." She stammered out. It still seemed surreal, considering she was brought here under the impression that her fate would be sealed here...either by a life in some dungeon somewhere or slain for 'being a traitor'...as Armando would have portrayed her to be.

The General did not let the insults get to him, he only remained stone faced. His eyes shifted at Shalinda, before the returned to Lady Grosvner. He was dismissed. Some servant Lord of the family would escort him to Joseph, who would make sure he got his remuneration. All he cared about was if he got paid, and if he did, he wouldn't care too much about being verbally insulted or not completing the mission given the circumstances.

"Thank you for relieving me of this ridiculousness," he replied as he moved to the door. He turned to look at the two women, and smiled at Shalinda. "It was a pleasure knowing you, Shalinda. All the best in your future endeavours," he said. His smile by now had turned into a grin. He turned the doorknob, and let himself out of the room. The General followed the Lord to where he would get paid, and after that he would be on his merry way to the next available job.

Ione made her way over to the table and selected one of the crystal goblets, she gracefully poured some of the red wine into expensive glass. She only nodded and grinned as the General made his colourful remarks before leaving the room. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. She kept her thought to her, rather than say it aloud.

The noblewoman's attention was shifted to Shalinda, who had replied to her earlier enquiry. Ione didn't completely understand the other woman when she talked about repaying a debt to owe. "You have financial issues?" Unfortunately, when one brought up debt to a Grosvner, it was as if their minds were wired to immediately think of financial matters. She let the girl eat, knowing she was not in the best state of being at this time. Though somewhat cold and aloof at times, she was at least a good hostess. "I have servants to do that job. I didn't see any mess. Seems like you just need some rest, food, water, and to return to good health. I can grant you the courtesy of a stateroom here, and you can stay here until we can help you get to where you wish to go," she explained. Ione was willing to allow Shalinda to stay as a guest, recover, and get back to full health. Her meals and clothes would be provided courtesy of the Grosvner family. It was not often one found his or her self in the graces of the Grosvners.

Ridiculousness? If anything, he is the ridiculous one...stupid man. Shalinda thought to herself, watching him walk out of the room. As soon as the door closed, she heaved a rather large sigh of relief; she didn't have to put up with him anymore, but there remained the question on where to go after she had recovered. She didn't want to linger here any longer than she had to, and didn't want to become a burden to this rather nice and elegant woman who had become her hostess. Glancing down at her makeshift attire once more, Shalinda blushed while listening to what the other woman had to say.

"Financial issues? No no...I mean a debt of kindness. It was something my father brought me up to take into consideration: if anyone else does anything nice for you - or me in this case, then I have an obligation to repay that debt. I admit I have no money now, but mostly because I did not think to have any with me, with bandits and such on the roads...I only acquire what I need and nothing more." She glanced down at the cup of water in her hands, looking a little solemn. "I had been given the impression that I would return to my homeland and help a childhood friend escape a fate that she may or may not want...and yet it was as if I meant nothing to that man at all." The brunette sipped at the cool beverage, unsure on how she was to even go through with the original plan, especially if there was the very real possibility that Najla Mu'awiyah would be married before she even crossed the border. "I will try and make my recovery a quick one so I do not become a burden on you or your family, my lady." She added. Even though Shalinda would like nothing more than to indulge a little in the food that was present on the table, she was a guest - a humble one at that - and didn't want to end up taking more than her share. Besides, how much about her did this woman really know? Was this an act of kindness only preparing for something else down the line, or was it genuine?

"You are not in debt to our family," she replied. The Grosvners were the wealthiest family in the Kingdom, and they had their hands in every cookie jar imaginable. This little girl who had not cost too much was not of serious concern to them at this time. She had incurred no debt. There were people paid to ensure Grosvnersburg remained clean.

Ione listened as the girl explained her situation, and nodded. "There is nothing we can do about that, and we are sorry for all this confusion," she replied politely. She looked at the desk, and some notes she had received from her elder brother. "We will provide you with an escort to the borders of Hoei, but once you enter Rodan you will be on your own. So where do you wish to go?"

The question was legitimate, they needed to know where the girl planned to go. Ione would ensure Shalinda received an escort to the borders of Hoei, but once she left Kelyea the Grosvners escorts would part ways with her. "I assume it is Aknatar you wish to return to, no?"

It wasn't about cleaning the place of any mess she may have made - considering she hadn't had a bath or cleaned herself up in who knew how long - but mostly trying to at least replay this small kindness with something...whether it be money-wise or a favor...or something of that nature. But in hearing that she wasn't in debt to them caused the young woman to let out a small sigh in relief; at this point all she had left was her dignity, and that had almost been taken away today.

The lady h ad apologized for the confusion, to which Shalinda almost had to scoff at. It wasn't a 'misunderstanding' when that priest of A'er had sent her to Armando in the first place, and it cretainly wasn't a 'misunderstanding' when the man had tried to 'drop her off' somewhere to continue the mission on his own. But still, the apology was a decent gesture, so Shalinda had to give the woman some respect...even though she had nothing to apologize for. She was then told that she would be given an escort to the border between Hoei and Rodan, but then she would be on her own from there, and was asked where she wanted to go. As much as she wanted to go back to Aknatar and continue what she wanted to do in the first place - free Najla from having to marry against her will - Shalinda wasn't sure that her presence in the desert lands would be welcomed, considering there was one man already who disowned her, and another despised her for what he claimed she did to him. Besides, what would she do once she got back?: spend the rest of her life hiding from men that only wanted to either rob her of all dignity once again? Or end up getting herself killed for not conforming to what a 'normal Aknatari' woman should do and say?

On the final question, Shalinda glanced away, unsure on how best to answer that question. Her friendship with Najla was the only thing that tied her to Aknatar, and even then it seemed to slip through her fingers. She could feel tears welling up in her eyes, and took a few gulps of the cool water to help ward off the feeling before answering the lady's question. "In all honesty, I am unsure if I am meant to return. My father has disowned me for denying any suitor that had come for my hand, and another man - Faris Mu'awiyah - already expressed his hatred for me. The only thing I have left is my friend there...Faris's daughter, Najla. I had heard she was to be married, but..." Shalinda shook her head, then raised a hand to tuck the loose and dirtied strands behind her ears once more. "...this is the furthest south I have been; I know nothing else." I have only turned eighteen years some time ago, and already I have done and went through things no other woman should ever have to go through...and yet... She thought, again glancing away from her kind hostess.

Ione watched as it seemed the girl was going to cry. She looked down, and sank herself into a chair. Ione was a powerful woman in her own right, a slave to the ambition that drove many in her family. She was terrible at dealing with emotions, and she did feel bad deep down inside that one should have to cry and feel so terrible. It was just another person with problems Ione Grosvner could never fathom, and so she would just look down and later forget about her.

Ione listened to what the girl had to say, but she was no making any sense to her. The woman was all about business, much like her family, and so she wasn't sure how to respond to such a rant. "Do you have any idea where you wish to go, or what you want to do?" All she could really do was ask questions and help push the girl in a direction.

Again, her hostess asked her on what to do or where to go. Shalinda honestly had no idea on anything; sure she was a woman now, but how much did that about to, especially considering she was a woman who knew how to hunt and dress a deer - or any sort of game for that matter, who knew how to fight (albeit a little), and was essentially a female in a man's garb half the time? The brunette took a few deep deaths in an effort to not look weak or soft in front of the other woman, still uncertain of what sort of life she wanted...aside from loving it on her own terms.

She shook her head, still refusing to look at the older woman. "I have not been out much in the world aside from Aknatar, but going back would be the equivalent of death to who I am. I am supposed to be a lady: quiet, obedient, and subservient to my father, then my husband...if I ever have one. But in knowing that the man who proposed to me already has two other wives, and participating in the enslaving of others against their will just to make a profit... I cannot do that." She spoke, finally calming down. "I may as well submit to the church or something just so I remain myself..." But if I see that old man again, I am going to remove what makes him a man so he will never do that to me...or any other woman again! Shalinda thought afterwards, recalling the previous incident. "I don't need escorting, my lady. I appreciate the kind offer, but I am certain you have more important concerns than having some men see me safe somewhere." She glanced down at her clothes and blushed a little. "And I do apologize for my state of attire..."

(Sorry this is late; my muse was dead and I had a lot on my mind with this move coming up. I hope it's okay.)

Ione knew it was a scary thought to go out into the world on one's own, she would have been in the same situation if she were of low birth. Fortunately, Ione was born to the wealthy Grosvner family and so had the resources to take on the world. Nevertheless, she liked to motivate women to innovate and get creative when possible. Ione was known as a fiery and determined woman, but she also possessed a soft side to help others so they can help society.

"You know, my brother has been a great reformer," she stated somewhat abstractly. Ione stood up and walked over to two maps in the study. One was of Tetel'ac, and the other was of modern Kelyea. "Though we no longer have the power and seat of old we have always been strong in Hoei, particularly here in Hanalei," she explained. Well it was expected of a Grosvner to give a history lesson looking back nostalgically to the glory days of old. There was a look of disdain as she gazed at the map of modern Tetel'ac, longing for the Kelyea of her youthful days.

"My brother has sought to try to end the class hierarchy of old, and replace it with a commerce market system allowing people to forge their own destiny through trading, making their own money, and spending it as they please," she explained. The hard part was coming up with a plan to replace the governance structure of old, but the Grosvners felt themselves to be benevolent rulers and that things should carry on with more individual freedom to the people. It was a pretty radical concept, because it took money away from many of the old ruling families who depended solely upon tax for their income, and allowed a middle class to emerge. It was evident the Count of Hoei had done so here in Hoei, especially in Hanalei where there was a burgeoning middle class emerging, who were formerly restricted to the lower class. Their success was that of hard work and toil, not of high birth.

"Have you ever thought of going into a trade, opening a shop, or becoming a merchant?" Ione asked the question genuinely, interested to see if the girl would like to try her hand at living an honest, respectable life.

It had been a frightening experience to leave home in the dead of night, but it was a far better option than staying and dealing with not only her father's wrath, but that of other denied suitors. She wanted to live we life, and actually know someone well enough to decide if they were worth marrying, and not for money or fame or anything selfish. Didn't anyone know of the concept of marrying for love? Or was that a dead thing now? Shalinda was about ready to excuse herself when the woman's words caught her attention.

Her brother? A reformer? What sort of change did he want? The answer to the last made her arch a view in surprise, since hardly anyone wanted to help the 'poor people'...not that Shalinda wasn't poor by any means; she just didn't think she would be allowed her due as a daughter of a sheik, especially with how she acted. She still had a ring she could sell for some money, but it was the only thing of her mother she had, and didn't want to give it up. "It would be nice for all people to have a say in how they live their lives instead of being treated like cattle..." The brunette murmured aloud, but wasn't sure if such a thing would suit her, since all she knew was the basics in sewing, acting like a lady...all thugs most women knew how to do...thing that would 'make' a woman a wife. But the question about her possibly having her own trade confused her. Shalinda shook her head. "No, my lady. Unfortunately, in Aknatar, women there are 'brought up' to be ideal wives for richer men, and their 'job' is to produce a son to inherit their farher's estate...or to be competing for their hisband's affection with possibly two other wives." She explained. It was better to expose what was going on and possibly fix it somehow...if that was even possible. "I was supposed to be like a 'normal' Aknatari: look pretty, be silent unless spoken to, and accept a proposal without knowing a man. I would not know what sort of trade to pursue that would be 'proper' for a woman aside from weaving cloth or baking goods, neither of which I have much experience in...or am good at." It was here Shalinda looked away, glancing out the window. "What I want...is to stop those with no home or family from being treated like rubbish, or worse than that. People are being forcibly taken in Aknatar and sold into bondage to the sheiks there...families torn apart and lives ruined. I saw too much suffering there..."

Love was a concept rare in a world were power, politics, greed, ambition and other sinful characteristics dominated the minds and hearts of men. Perhaps even the notion of love was greedy to those who desired it and would do anything for it, no different than a man desiring wealth. These were moral arguments that could be debated forever and never be resolved. Life was short; one should do as they wished - if they had the means. Most people were born to a class and stuck in a life with little control over it. The Grosvners had strived to help their people forge their own lives, but it was mostly kept to Hanalei and Hoei, and the rest of Kelyea, but beyond the borders of Kelyea things were much more different.

Her brother did want to help his people improve themselves, but he could not do it for them. He could only try to create the environment needed for his people to take the initiative and improve their lot. He didn't promise success, he just provided an opportunity to attain it. "No one can know how the future will turn out, but people can innovate and grow," she replied, somewhat cryptically. Ione could only encourage, she could not convince someone else to improve his or her situation - only they could do it.

"Shalinda, dear, we are not in Aknatar. You are young, you can learn. You bemoan your situation, well do something about it," she said, a little more stern this time. Sometimes one had to say the hard things to help encourage someone to find motivation. "I can provide you with an investment, and let you decide what to do with the money. A second chance, but once it is gone it will be beyond me. Use it wisely, and be smart," she said, offering to give the young woman money if she wished to open a shop or become a merchant.

"There will always be some form of inequity in the world, we can't fix that. We can only provide the opportunity for one to pull his self up. Ultimately only a person can help his or her self, we can't do it for them. It is sad, but it is true. We are flawed creatures," she lamented, looking at the window and into the distance. This had required deeper thought than she first imagined, but the focus at hand was to deal with Shalinda. Only Shalinda could improve her own lot, but Ione could provide some tools so she could help herself out. The question is if Shalinda would take them, or not. The choice was her own, as were the consequences of her actions.

Innovate and grow...that was what sue did during her short time in self-imposed exile. Shalinda wasn't supposed to learn how to hunt and dress a deer, or to build herself a shelter, or how to defend herself from a man's unwanted advances...but she did. Granted there was a price to go with that, but it was a price she was willing to pay. But what made this woman think she was some low-born peasant? Was it how she dressed or spoke? The brunette didn't think she did anything different aside from giving respect (mostly because this woman was worth giving respect to), but being told she was 'bemoaning' her predicament...that it a reaction.

Shalinda clenched her fists but tried to hold her demeanor the same as she answered, "It is not just me I speak for, but oter women like me. I know this is not Aknatar by any means. If you are willing to lend me money to start something, then what about all those that longer in the streets? The ones whose families cast them out for not adhering to their standards? My being here was of my doing, and I have accepted that. But I would rather go through that all again if it meant not having to be forced into a situation I had no say in the matter to begin with...because that has helped make me a stronger person." Again she refused to make eye contact, mostly this time because she didn't want the other woman to see the anger flash in her eyes. If there was something this lady could do to help others, then why not do so, even if it is in another land?

"I did have a plan: to help that man free my friend from having to marry someone she didn't love, and from suffering a similar fate. Unfortunately, he had other ideas." Saving Najla - or at least making sure she was alright - was something she still wanted since the oldest Mu'awiyah daughter had been her childhood friend for years until it was time for them to be 'married off', but after the delays, could she even make it back in time? "One of the priests in...Hanalei I believe, had sent me there with a message." If this woman was goo g to 'berate' her for what had happened, then she needed the whole story, not just from what was told from other people. But the offer to start a shop or a trade was something new; all she knew was the basics all women knew: cooking, cleaning, sewing. What could be done with that?

This is Tetel’ac, where the women are capricious, the ale is usually tepid, and life is hard. Prince or pauper, the world is a dangerous place to play and the game of politics is far from voluntary. Whether you live in the gentle tropics, lush forests, harsh mountains, or expansive desert, every day is sure to spell adventure for those who live under the intruding thumb of the king, or amoung the hidden eyes of oh so many spies. With a kingdom on the brink of yet a second revolution, the future is a fragile thing indeed.
