There are Legends about the Guardians that act as emissarys of the gods. They are embodiments of the divine.

Things that the guardians have done are:
Riding the world of the evil giants that threatend the world long ago. (this is why they are here now). Destroying the great warlord Heron, warlord of darkness. Defeating the sorceress Serassiryla, and assisting the gods in the destruction of all dragons.

Here are the guardians that exist:

Merthan: A large phoenix like bird but controlling the power of thunder and storms. Her temple is in The empire of Corbis the capital city of Corbal. She oversees the passing of the mantle of emperor from one generation to the next.
