The Institute for Higher Magic has locations across the world (the main reason why the first thing students learn is teleportation spells), the main building is in London, UK. Other major locations include San Fansisco, US; Edinburgh, Scotland and Reykjavic, Iceland, although barely a country exists without an institute building.
Fronted by powerful image charms, Institute buildings rarely look out of place in the city and are often annexes to existing universities, with abassadors in their mortal counterparts (and vice versa). The result is a rare oasis in which to practice magic in peace, with human conveniences on tap.
The first Institute was created 1890, in Edinburgh, headed by the sibling team of Ermengarde and Edgar James. The James' wanted to give somewhere for aspiring young magic users to work in peace and develop their powers to there full extent. As little as two years later, the Institute's intake had grown so large that the James' were forced to buy a second property in London.
In 1945, the third largest building was unveiled in San Fansisco, shortly followed by Reykjavic in 1950.
From the begining, and to this day, the Institute for Higher Magic accepts only witches and wizards. Although those accepted my deny their place, some are forced into the position by harsh laws and dangerous practice.
Students are accepted at the age of 10 and may leave only after completing the customary first year and the tests. Students may take the tests at any time after their first year, but the actual time before graduation is different for each student.
