When you turn off your TV using your remote control, the unit is not actually totally off. The unit is just on standby status. Manufacturers do this so that users can open their TV sets fast.

In short, the unit is still consuming some power to keep the "Stand-By Mode" circuit running.

To totally shutdown the power you have to unplug the power cable.

But this is not the safest way to do so. Also, you dont usually do this when you are the busy type.

The better solution is to use an AVR.

Plug all your TV, DVD player and Stereo to that same AVR so that when you go out of your home you simply flip the AVR switch to turn them all off, including the AVR.

You can be sure that your appliances are now totally off. You can be sure that you wont have to worry about your home getting burned down due to electrical short circuiting.

I use this setup in my own home.

Sometimes, when I am in a great hurry I simply switch off the AVR to kill all the appliances, even if the movie is still running.

My AVR supplies power to my TV, DVD player and the sound system.

This greatly reduce fire hazards as well.

Buy AVR that have these;

1) 500 watts or higher power rating
2) Fuse or breaker protection
3) 3 sockets for 220 volts
4) 1 socket for 110 volts (optional, but may come handy at critical times)
5) switch at the front panel (so you can easily switch it off when you go out of the house) dont buy AVRs with their switches placed at the back panel.

By the way, buy the trusted brands. Usually, these have power meters and are priced around 600 pesos per unit and up. Buy only from reputable stores. Make sure they offer 1 year warranty. Ask the salesman for info or the history of the product you wish to buy.
