“You’ve got Native American blood in you?” Dean asked, surprised by her claim since she didn’t particularly look like she was related to anyone native. The thing was though, now that she’d said it, he was looking for the give away signs, perhaps something in the eyes, a flinty hardness that came from generations of people before her being oppressed by the white man. No wonder she didn’t like it when he tried to boss her around.

“So, you’re a walking, talking, spiritual E.R. then? I bet that comes in handy in our line of work.” There was no judgment in his voice, no concern or fear over her abilities. Not that there was much to be scared about when her gift was to make you feel better, but from her reluctance to talk about it originally, he guessed that either she'd had trouble with people's prejudices before, or it was something that actually frightened her too.

Suddenly Dean was thinking about Sam again, all those years ago when his visions started happening and the poor kid was freaked beyond belief about why he was cursed with them. Dean had been scared too, he didn't know how to handle it but for his brother's sake, he acted like it was no big deal. He knew it was something Sam couldn't do anything about. It wasn't his fault he'd been fed demon blood when he was a baby, so Dean saw no need to make him feel any more like a freak than he already did. It was the same with Sully. Of course, now she'd told him, it did leave her open to a little good natured teasing further down the line.

After a moment of thought, he narrowed his eyes at her and frowned in confusion.

“Why didn’t you fix yourself up last night then?”

She’d definitely been hurt earlier by the demon they’d encountered, and having to fight off a bunch of drunken assholes from the bar can’t have done her any favours, because she was still protectively shielding her side as though it was badly bruised.

Maybe she was a masochist. Or maybe she was more like him than he dared to admit. Perhaps something in her past gave her a reason to punish herself as a reminder to never forget it. Purposefully making yourself suffer rather than going for the luxury of pain relief was something Dean knew about all too well. In his case he thought he didn’t deserve to be let off the hook so easily, he wondered what reasons she had to do the same.

After her confession Sully waited to see that immediate hatred in his eyes. Most people got their powers from demons. It wasn’t often that it was something non-evil like. She’d been called a freak on more than one occasion and even lost her only friend from childhood when she’d healed him after they’d both been hit by a car. Sully had gotten lucky, just a gash on her leg, but her buddy was a lot worse off, so she threw some of her healing into him. He lived, but he didn’t want anything to do with her after that.

“You’ve got Native American blood in you?”

“Yeah, I know shocking.” Sully rolled her eyes. “I’m only half.” She didn’t feel the need to clarify that it her mother had been full blooded Native American and that her father had been white. Those details were none of Dean’s business.

“So, you’re a walking, talking, spiritual E.R. then? I bet that comes in handy in our line of work.”

Sully was honestly surprised at how casual Dean seemed to be about this. Then again, the guy thought he’d been to hell. She still wasn’t sure if she believed that or not. Dean got a far off look as though thinking about something or someone. Watching the thoughtfulness flickering in Dean’s eyes made her wonder if she was wrong about him. Maybe there was more to him than just being some over-egotistical, always thinks he’s right hunter.

“Why didn’t you fix yourself up last night then?”

A smirk tugged at the corner of Sully’s lips. That was the million dollar question wasn’t it? Why could Sully heal anyone who wasn’t her, but not even the slightest scratch on herself? The truth was she didn’t know. Maybe it was some psychological thing because of what her father did to her making Sully feel like she wasn’t worthy of things like that. Maybe that’s not how the power worked. She’d never been able to talk to anyone about it. It’s part of the reason she was trying to track down her mother. Maybe she had some of the same powers. Maybe her mother could explain to her how all this worked. Another tidbit of information that Dean didn’t need to know.

Nibbling on the inside of her lip Sully shrugged. “It doesn’t work like that.” Holding up her hands she wiggled her fingers again. “These magic hands only work on other people. Maybe it’s because I have to use my own energy to heal them.” Running a hand through her hair Sully leaned back against the wall. “The more I heal someone, the more tired I become. I don't really like to do it often. I guess you figured how vulnerable to attack it makes me.”

The explanation about why she couldn’t heal herself sort of made sense in a way. The energy she put into using her powers had to come from somewhere, whether that was from her own soul or some kind of spiritual tap into Native American reserves of hoodoo, he didn‘t know. He did know that it didn’t particularly bother him now she’d laid it out for him. There had been the odd couple of times when a hunt had forced him to cross paths with Native Americans and in all his experiences with them, those with so called shamanistic tendencies were generally decent people just trying to help others. Of course, there were the occasional cases of people dying nastily when they moved into houses built on ancient Indian burial grounds, but that was the dead for you. Pissy little bitches sometimes.

“The more I heal someone, the more tired I become. I don't really like to do it often. I guess you figured how vulnerable to attack it makes me.”

“That explains the passing out into coma land last night then.” He mused, his gaze drifting to the tangled up sheets on her bed and then over to the untouched spare he could have taken.

“Which begs the question,” he looked back over at her, wiping the slow trail of blood away from his brow so it avoided going in his eye, “why’d you heal me?” He honestly didn’t know why she’d have put her own safety over helping him, particularly when they didn’t get on so well most of the time.

“That explains the passing out into coma land last night then.”

Sully winced, her face wrinkling up and contorting as she recalled just how stupid she’d been. She knew better than to let herself pass out around people she didn’t. That had actually been light compared to some of the deep sleeps she’d fallen into. Someone could literally do whatever they wanted to her while she was in that stated and Sully wouldn’t wake. It was dangerous for her to do something like that. Hell it could get her killed.

“Yeah, that was actually a pretty light sleep. If I’d full on healed you, well full on almost-healed you when you were brutalized by Satan’s Revenge I’d still be sleeping. The more I use the longer I sleep and the deeper into the coma like state I go.”

“Which begs the question… why’d you heal me?”

“Temporary insanity,” She said instantly. Her defensive walls slammed back into place, her face going hard. The truth was she knew why she healed him the first time, but she’d made a mistake letting her guard down and fixing his nose just because he was whining like a two year old that got their lollipop taken away. “Either way now you know my secret, though I’m not sure if I believe yours.”

She didn’t like all these questions. Dean seemed calm about her having these powers, but Sully didn’t know that Dean wouldn’t trade this information for the right price. Hell she’d already said too much. There were hunters who just assumed she got her powers from demons and were quick to want to kill her, thinking Sully a witch. She didn’t have powers like that. The only other power she had was the ability to take Spirit Walks. She was still tinkering with that, not sure exactly how it worked or if it was helpful to her in anyway. That, was a secret Dean didn’t need to know about.

“So what the hell do we do about this Mara? You think a normal exorcism will work? If these creatures are as rare as we think, something tells me it won’t be that easy.”

“Temporary insanity,”

Dean couldn’t help himself, a short burst of laughter erupted at that comment. If nothing else, he did like her for her brutal honesty. There was no other reason for her to cut him a break last night unless she was just sick of hearing him bitching. Perhaps she would feel more at ease if he explained that she wasn’t the first person he’d met that had superhuman powers and that not everyone who was gifted with them - or more realistically, cursed with them - had to hide the fact from people like him.

“Either way now you know my secret, though I’m not sure if I believe yours.”

“Believe me, don’t believe me. I don’t really care.” He shrugged wearily, lacking the energy to bother convincing her further. Maybe if they survived the hunt, he’d sit down and be frank with her, maybe show her his battle scars so she could see he wasn’t crazy, but right now they’d shared about as much as they probably would without copious amounts of alcohol in their systems. It was time to get back to work.

“So what the hell do we do about this Mara? You think a normal exorcism will work? If these creatures are as rare as we think, something tells me it won’t be that easy.”

“It’s never that easy, even when its simple.” Dean replied as he got stiffly back up to his feet again. Everything was starting to throb thanks to their little motel room tussle and a small groan crept out when he stretched and rolled the kinks out of his shoulders. He was getting too old for this. How the hell Bobby kept going at his age Dean didn’t know.

“As for the exorcism, I made a couple of calls last night and got something that might be a little more effective than just your everyday eviction rite. It’s on the laptop…wherever that went…” He made a slow, half circle scan of the room, trying to locate where the computer had ended up after the whirlwind melee that had disrupted most of the room. It certainly wasn’t on the table anymore, because the table was in pieces.

Finally he found it, hiding under a broken lampshade and half the curtain from the window, and thankfully, it’s tumble to the ground hadn’t done any damage, nor had it lost any of the information Dean had pulled up during the small hours of the morning. He picked it up and handed it over to Sully so she could familiarise herself with the exorcism.

“Hopefully that should work. If all else fails…” he pulled out Ruby’s demon killing knife, eyeing the inscriptions on it as he spoke, “there’s always plan B.”

“As for the exorcism, I made a couple of calls last night and got something that might be a little more effective than just your everyday eviction rite. It’s on the laptop…wherever that went…”

Sully raised a brow at that, while Dean searched for the laptop. Honestly, she was glad they had fought. It would probably make the duration of this hunt a lot easier. They’d gotten a lot of animosity out, and hopefully they would be able to work together, if only for a little while. If they were really lucky they’d never see each other again after this hunt.

When he handed her the computer, Sully looked over the exorcism rite. It looked solid. Dean definitely had contacts. She could probably do with a few more of those, but Sully wasn’t really a people person. There had been no one, in her experience, that she could ever rely on. Dean seemed to have that though, and somewhere deep inside of her, she felt a pang of envy. Immediately she stomped down on it, snuffing it out. There was no point in dwelling on things like that. Instead she brought her focus back to the problem at hand.

“Hopefully that should work. If all else fails…there’s always plan B.”

She glanced to Dean and the knife, still wondering where he got such a useful toy. It made her wonder again about his story about going to hell. Had that been something he brought back with him? Or a trick he learned in hell, carving the symbols into the knife. Idly she wondered if they recreated the knife, if it would have the same effect. She put that little thought in storage for later thought.

“Yeah, good luck trying to stab a horse through the heart with a knife.” She muttered. “Let’s hope plan A. works.” Putting the laptop to the side, Sully eased herself up, ignoring the pains in her body. She’d had worse before and there was work to do. Grabbing fresh clothes, Sully wandered into the bathroom and quickly showered. After she rewrapped her side she put on clean clothes and stomp-your-ass-into-the-ground boots. She braided her hair and pulled on a cap, before walking back out and stuffing her dirty clothes in her bag.

“Let’s grab some lunch. We can talk strategy and by that time, the Mara and her rider she be lurking at the rodeo.”

While Sully showered, Dean used the reflection in the stainless steel kettle in the kitchenette area of the room to check the cut on his brow, taking a wad of napkins he’d brought back with the coffee and doughnuts to staunch the bleeding. After a little bit of cleaning up in the sink, Dean was ready to go. Or ready to nap. One of the two, probably the latter if Sully decided to take her time in the bathroom.

He made a half hearted attempt to tidy up the room after their debacle but gave up when he realised it was pretty much hopeless. The tv was broken, so he didn’t even have that to keep him distracted while he waited and eventually he started to doze off, sat upright against the headboard of the spare bed with his legs outstretched in front of him.

“Let’s grab some lunch. We can talk strategy and by that time, the Mara and her rider she be lurking at the rodeo.”

Dean jerked awake, surprised he hadn’t heard the bathroom door open. Blinking a couple of times, he played it off as though he had merely been resting his eyes in boredom over having to wait, hoping she was too pre-occupied with either packing up her bag or the fact he’d made a little bit of effort to tidy up to catch on.

“Sounds good.” He cleared his throat and got up off the bed, heading straight for the door.

“I’ll drive.” If he drove, he couldn’t fall asleep. Well he could, but even exhausted beyond belief, he’d never endanger the Impala by daring to close his eyes behind the wheel. Besides, he knew just the place to go for lunch.

There had to be a Hooters somewhere around here.

Sully had to admit that the Impala was a nice ride. Dean kept her up and she rumbled loudly as they drove, almost announcing her presence so that the other cars would coo and preen and be ten ways jealous of her. Sully figured she really oughta get to work on fixing the truck up. If she didn’t it was going to die on her, and if by some miracle she ever ran into her brother again, he would not be happy.

Hooters wasn’t too far from the motel and Sully just smirked when she saw the sign. It wasn’t exactly a strip club, but the wings were off the chain. The girls were pretty enough to look at, but if Sully were looking to pick up a guy she would have opted for a bar or a strip club. It’s usually a lot easier to pick up non clingy guys at places like that. Meeting someone at restaurants and such usually lead to wanting phone numbers and asking personal questions. Sully wasn’t into that crap. She much preferred a quick lay and move on with your day. It made things less complicated.

Unfortunately they were still in the middle of a hunt, and hanging around Dean wouldn’t help her game any. Men would either think they were related or dating. Both ideas made Sully sick to her stomach.

Finding the booth at the back of the restaurant, Sully put her back to the wall, keeping her eyes on the door. Maybe she was paranoid, or maybe just smart, but she didn’t like people getting the drop on her. She shoved the menu away when the big busted, scantily dressed red head handed it to her. Sully already knew what she wanted.

“Dozen wings, hot as you can make em and a Budweiser in a bottle.” She hated it when they poured it in a glass. It somehow changed the taste. Leaning back she looked at Dean waiting for him to order, so they could figure out a plan.

It always made Dean swell with pride whenever people appreciated his car. He took good care of her, when he wasn’t knee deep in saving the world, and he liked to show her off when he could. Annali had often joked that she was the other woman in Dean’s life because he treated the car like it was his soul mate. Maybe it was more like a member of the family, but curling up in the front seat after a long night’s hunting just wasn’t the same as coming home to a warm bed where he could slide into the arms of the love of his life. Nothing matched that.

Still, if people liked his car, then it was a sure fire thing that Dean would like them and so Sully’s quiet acknowledgment that his wheels were a thing of beauty was a step in the right direction in their volatile relationship and he silently vowed not to purposefully provoke her while they ate lunch. It it happened by accident, then that wasn't his fault.

Amazingly, she didn’t seem phased by the choice of restaurant he’d picked which was quite refreshing since Sam tended to steer him away from places where the waitress’s were paid to show off their goodies to the patrons. There again, Dean had always thought Sam to be a bit of a prude when it came to the opposite sex, it was a mystery how he ever got laid.

Beating him to it, Sully sat with her back to the wall, a classic defensive strategy that Dean liked to employ himself. If your back was to the wall, then you didn’t have to worry about being snuck up on while you ate. Also, particularly in an establishment like Hooters, it afforded you a great view of the ‘attractions’ on display. A little annoyed but keeping it to himself, Dean sank down in the seat opposite Sully and perused the menu too.

“Make that double.” He added after Sully had ordered her hot wings, his eyes veering swiftly away from the menu in his hands to the breasts at his eye line. The name tag read ‘Mindy’, not that Dean was paying much attention to actual words right now. Naturally, he gave the waitress his most charming smile and a little waggle of his eyebrows to which she bit her lower lip and returned her ‘I get off at six‘ smile. Dean didn’t have the heart to tell her he was only window shopping, mostly because he knew the whole flirting display would make Sully roll her eyes.

“Oh, and a side of fries, thanks.” Stealing a long glance at Mindy’s rear as she shimmied away to the kitchen, Dean found himself perking up after a long morning of feeling exhausted. He doubted it was down to the fresh air on the drive over.

“I do love the hot sauce here.” He commented, grinning from ear to ear as he glanced back across the table.

“I do love the hot sauce here.”

Sully snorted. "Yeah because that's what all the men come here for. The hot sauce." She rolled her eyes, but a small smirk played on her face.

The fight had gotten a lot of aggression out, though she still wasn't sure about Dean knowing of her secret. If word got out it could be bad. Hunters had a tendency to shoot first and ask questions later. If she could heal herself, well that wouldn't be a problem, but she couldn't so it was.

Sully threw an arm over the back of the booth, and then winced, completely forgetting about her side and the slightly bruised ribs. She tried to play it off, forcing herself to sit that way. She'd been hurt worse. She glanced past Dean towards the door, watching for anyone or anything unsavory to walk in the door. Her gun was in the front of her waist band under her shirt, for a quick draw in case anyone tried anything. She really hoped they'd be able to eat their lunch in peace though. That bit of reprieve would be nice before heading to the rodeo and kicking some demon ass.

"So, is hell where you got that shiny knife?" Sully raised a brow, wondering if Dean would give him anymore information on it. It was nifty and she'd like to get her hands on one if she could. He had been a might secretive of its origins earlier though.

“Not exactly.” Dean replied, an air of suspicion in the tone considering this was the third or fourth time she’d brought the subject up about his demon killing knife. Fairly understandable that a hunter would be so interested in it, especially after seeing how useful it was in a battle to the death, but Dean was beginning to wonder if she had designs on it for her own collection. If that was the case, she’d have to pry it from his cold, dead hands.

“I know a demon who has some skills when it comes to magic.” He glanced around, waiting until the busty redhead had brought over their beers before quietly taking out the inscribed blade for Sully to see a little better.

“We had a little bit of a tussle one time and I took it from her.” An amused smirk curled up one corner of his mouth when he pictured Ruby‘s bitch face. “Don’t think she’s ever gonna be happy about that.”

When Sully leaned forward to take hold of the knife for a closer inspection, Dean pulled it back from her reach, shaking his head a little, clearly not willing to let it out of his grasp.

“It’s one of a kind and I have trust issues. You understand.” With that, he tucked it back into his inside jacket pocket and then shrugged off the garment and put it on the seat beside him, rolling his shirt sleeves up so he wouldn’t end up getting hot sauce all over them while they ate.

"So you do believe I was in Hell then?"

When the waitress brought the food over, Sully started chowing down. She hadn't realized just how hungry she was. She thought that over before answering, stalling by biting into a chicken wing smothered in hot, savory buffalo sauce. A tempting distraction.

She hadn't been going to take the knife. Sully was a lot of things, including a thief, but she was more interested in if it could be replicated. If it was a matter of symbols she wanted to at least copy them down on a piece of paper so she could etch into her own blade. If it was more than that, maybe a spell, well she could look into that later.

The crazy thing in all this is that she was sitting across from a hunter who claimed to have gone to hell, come back with the aid of an angel, and hung out with a demon. It was crazy enough it just might be true.

"The Jury's still out, but the verdict is leaning towards guilty of believing your insane story."

She leaned back against the seat again, looking across the table at him. "So what's it like having an angel on your shoulder?"

“A raging pain in the ass.” Came the quick answer to that question. Ever since Castiel had turned up in his life, or his death, however you wanted to label their first encounter in the pit, things had gone from bad to worse rapidly. Now he had to shoulder the responsibility of saving the entire world all because Heaven had prophesized he was the only one who could which left him with little time to worry about what Sam might be getting himself into with Ruby when they snuck off in the middle of the night thinking that Dean was none the wiser.

He wasn’t an idiot, he knew something was going on between them and it really didn’t sit well in his gut. But, Sam was a grown man - or an overgrown man if you asked Dean - and he had the right to make his own mistakes, it just un-nerved him that he was making those mistakes with a demon.

Shaking the thought from his mind, he focused on the chicken wings in front of him, licking his lips and his fingers when they got too messy from the hot sauce.

“I swear, he picks the most inappropriate times to just show up, I think he does it on purpose because he knows it pisses me off.” Pointing the bones from one devoured wing he continued.

“One time, me and Li were in the middle of…” A smutty grin spread over his face and then quickly fell again.

“Cas appears on the edge of the bed acting like the world’s ending. Again.” Dean shook his head and picked up a couple of fries.

“Guy’s got no sense of timing whatsoever.”

Sully smirked a little at Dean's story, as she continued eating her wings. Reaching over she snagged some of his fry, dabbing them in the buffalo sauce before dipping them in ranch and chowing down. She raised a brow at the comment of Dean and Li and Cas popping in on the side of the bed.

"Was it a kinky he wanted to watch kind of thing?" She waggled her brows suggestively and smirked wider. "Can he even have sex?" She was musing out loud. "Or is that like a sin for him?"

She shrugged at the world ending statement. "There's a lot of bad things happening out there. More so than usual the last few years. As if someone opened a gate and let out more monsters into the world. At least you can an angel to watch your ass and heal you when necessary." She wagged a chicken wing at him. "Some of us aren't so lucky. We get killed, we are D-to the -E A D...dead. No get out of hell free cards."

For a moment, Sully envied Dean. He had family, and friends. A woman to love and a friggin angel watching out for him. Dean was a lucky ass man, even if he didn't realize it.

Then Sully remembered what had happened when she did have family and friends, and remembered why she preferred to be alone, squashing that envious feeling with a cold, hard boot. There was a reason she was the way she was, and Sully needed to remember that.

She smirked at Dean. "Still think you might be a demon though."

"Was it a kinky he wanted to watch kind of thing?"

“God, I hope not. That’s a whole new level of disturbing I don’t even wanna think about when I’m eating.” Dean made a face at the thought and then became distracted from it when Sully snagged a couple of his fries. He didn’t mind sharing, but it irritated him enough for him to subtly pull the plate back away from her so she wouldn’t get too comfortable with just helping herself again. If she'd wanted fries, she should have ordered them. It must have been a chick thing because she certainly wasn’t the first to pull the same sneaky move, those in the past claiming that fries from someone else’s plate always tasted better. Dean couldn’t deny the logic in that. Sam’s fries were always better than his, but that wasn't the point.

"Can he even have sex?"

“What?” Caught off guard thanks to ‘fry-gate’, Dean frowned in confusion until her question sunk in properly.

“Uh, I honestly don’t know the answer to that.” But he thought about it anyway.

“Well, an angel, as far as I can tell, is pretty much a giant mass of light that burns your eyes out when you look at it, so in his true form? I doubt he’s getting to first base, let alone third.” He took a bite out of a particularly juicy chicken wing and wiped the sauce from his chin with the back of his hand.

“But he does walk around wearing a fully functioning meat suit, so I guess the equipment’s there, I just don’t think he has any urge to use it.” There was a pause to chew and swallow. “He’s like forty year old virgin, only with less personality.”

Another picked clean bone got tossed into the pile and Dean sat back for a moment to swig his beer and take in the scenery. The waitress, Mindy, was still giving him the eye from across the room as she blatantly ignored the advances of a couple of college students that were practically drooling over her ample assets. Dean smiled back, but his mind was elsewhere.

"There's a lot of bad things happening out there. More so than usual the last few years. As if someone opened a gate and let out more monsters into the world.

Dean swallowed his mouthful of beer, struggling to get it past the guilty lump in his throat. There was no denying that he had a major role in not only the devil’s gate being opened, allowing a flood of demons to walk the earth again, but also in setting things in motion when it came to that pesky apocalypse business. Dean Winchester had a lot to atone for and plenty of wrongs to right before his time was done. Trouble was, he doubted there were enough years in his lifetime to reset the balance.

“At least you have an angel to watch your ass and heal you when necessary. Some of us aren't so lucky. We get killed, we are D-to the -E A D...dead. No get out of hell free cards."

“I’ve been dead plenty of times, I can’t say coming back to life ever really felt lucky.” He commented darkly, focusing on the plate of fries to avoid eye contact.

What’s dead should stay dead.

"Still think you might be a demon though."

Dean glanced up then, one eyebrow raised almost as if in challenge.

“Saying Christo ain’t enough to convince you huh? Okay then…” He cast his eyes across the table, his gaze finally landing on the salt shaker tucked away behind the specials menu. He reached over and shook a healthy dose over his fries, making a point of rubbing a couple of fries into the grains to make sure they were liberally coated.

“Demons don’t like salt, right?” Confidently he shoved the fries into his mouth and chewed, savouring the salty taste as a wicked prank sprung to mind. Call it payback for her stealing his food or just the product of a twisted mind, but he was pretty sure it would be hilarious either way.

Once he’d swallowed the mouthful, he smiled and held his hands out openly as if to show off that he’d passed some sort of test, but then suddenly he grabbed his throat and gasped, his eyes going wide as he feigned a violent reaction.

“Son of a bitch, it burns!” He wheezed, putting on a show worthy of any Oscar winner, or any demon he’d ever attacked with salt. After a few moments milking it, he stopped winding Sully up and sat back casually, laughing hard at the look on her face.

“Just kidding! You should see your face right now.” Chuckling to himself, he downed another swig of beer and carried on eating.
