I'm always planning for the worst
I SIGNED MY WILL RIGHT AFTER BIRTH
Lily walked down the street, a cool autumn breeze stirring the hem of her jacket.

She’d never really felt comfortable in big cities, having been raised in seclusion with her brothers. Something about a place so large was daunting, and a little bit scary, though she’d never admit such a thing. After all, she faced demons and monsters on a regular basis, so what would people think if they knew she was intimidated by something so stupid? Frowning a bit, she pulled her jacket tighter about herself and continued on, glad that the crowds seemed to be relatively small compared to some of her other trips to New York.

When she’d gotten the call from Solphi, several different emotions had hit her. Firstly, she’d been glad to hear from the woman, who she looked up to as a sister. It’d been several months since they’d last spoken, and even a bit longer since they’d seen each other. There had been a time when Solphi and Lily spent a lot of time together, but things changed as they each became busier and busier… And now, with the whole world going to hell, time was at a premium.

The second emotion was shame. Despite any excuses that she could make about being too busy, Lily knew that she should have called Solphi a long time ago. And, truthfully, she’d been intending to, but… Well, more excuses. Solphi was the closest thing that she had to a sister, and Lily felt terribly guilty about losing touch with her.

After shame, it was a close race between excitement and nervousness. So much had happened in the months since they’d last talked. She and Abbie had gotten together after years of tip-toeing around the subject; they were hunting together now, and even talking about someday settling down together, once things calmed a bit; and, perhaps the biggest change in her life had come from Lizzie, the young daughter that Lily had thought dead long ago, returned to her against all odds. It had been a long, bumpy road, but things were finally looking up for her.

Eventually Lily reached the old stone building where Solphi kept a small apartment. Lily had been here once or twice in the past, but it’d been a long time, and she needed to check the address that Solphi had given her before she went inside, took the elevator to the proper floor, and made her way to stand outside the door. Biting her lip, she raised her hand to knock, hesitating…

Shaking her head and chuckling at her own uncertainty, Lily rapped lightly on the door, adjusting the strap of her satchel a bit and waiting, one hand going habitually to her mouth as she bit her nails.

Lonely But Never Alone

Baby I'm Afraid To Sleep, Cause When I Do I Only Dream Of You

Solphi sat at the small kitchen table sipping coffee. To be honest she probably didn’t need the caffeine. Her nerves were on edge. Lily and Sastre weren’t on great terms, or at least they hadn’t been the last time Solphi had been around, but that had been a long time ago. Years even. Apprehension flowed into her making Solphi wonder if she was making a mistake. At the end of the day she was Sastre’s sister.

It had been a long, hard decision, one that Solphi weighed and measured making sure the pro’s outweighed the cons. It was something that had been weighing on her mind for the better part of two years. Solphi needed a backup plan. If she was honest, well Lily was always her first choice for back up these days. Her or Brennan.

Brennan might have been the better choice to call first, but Lily deserved to know. In some ways, Solphi thought she deserved to know more than Sastre did. Her heart still ached for the love she’d lost. She felt foolish for having believed him. It had been Sastre who reassured her, telling Solphi that things would be all right, that he loved her. He had been her first in so many ways. First love, first man she’d fallen into bed with, and the first man to break her heart. Then again he was the only man to have done any of those things. She gave him so much and he left her alone to face the darkness.

That had been so long ago, but every time she thought about it the raw, untamed pain came back to haunt her. For the most part she was good at hiding it. Solphi was a hunter after all. From a young age she’d learned how to act so she could pretend to be whoever she needed to be. Sometimes though – sometimes she just wished he would come back to her. In reality, she knew that would never happen. If Sastre was going to come back to her, he would have done it.

The knock on the door pulled Solphi from her thoughts. Wandering over she glanced out of the peephole. A smile tugged at the corner of her lips and she opened the door. Without hesitation she pulled Lily into a tight hug, arms wrapping around the other woman warmly.

“God, Lily-Pad it’s so good to see you!”

Solphi’s heart warmed seeing her old friend, but the reason she called Lily wasn’t just for a reunion. After a few moments, Solphi let go and pulled back to look at her. “You’re blond!” She couldn’t help but laugh. Lily had always been brunette, but the blond suited her too. “You look great.”

Stepping back, Solphi gestured with her hand. “Come in, come in. Can I get you something? Coffee, water, beer?” She was talking faster than she normally did, but nerves were getting the best of her now that Lily was here. Her gaze went to the closed second bedroom door, before going back to Lily. She really hoped the other woman didn’t hate her after this.

Yes, it had been entirely too long.

Lily sighed happily as she returned Solphi’s embrace, wrapping her arms around her tightly. Solphi was the closest thing Lily had to a sister, a bond that had developed over the years that the older woman had dated Sastre. Even when their relationship had ended badly, Lily had kept in touch with Solphi, feeling more affection for her than she’d ever felt for her brother, who ignored her and pushed her away more often than not. And now, when things between her and Sastre were worse than ever, Lily felt more comfortable and loved in Solphi’s arms than she could imagine feeling in Sastre’s.

“God Solph, we’ve got a lot of catching up to do,” Lily told her, still smiling happily. “I’m so sorry about not calling you lately, thing’s have been crazy.”

Following Solphi in, Lily took a seat at a small kitchen table while her friend bustled around the kitchen. Truthfully, she couldn’t help but feel the slightest bit jealous of Solphi. Lily had never had a place like this, a place of her own. It seemed the way she was raised—always on the road, never stopping anywhere for more than a few days—had impacted her more than she thought, and she always felt anxious and ready to go when she’d stayed in one place for too long. Now, though, with all of the changes she’d been through in the past few months, Lily was beginning to wonder if maybe that shouldn’t change…

“Oh, sorry,” she said, blinking out of her thoughts when Solphi asked if she wanted anything. “Uh, beer would be great, thanks.” Observant as she was, Lily noticed Solphi’s glance at the bedroom door, though she knew better than to ask. Solphi had called her and asked her to come here for some reason, and if that reason had something to do with whoever—or whatever—was in that bedroom, then Lily knew she’d get to it in her own time.

“So, how’ve you been?” she asked, delicately testing the waters, her own eyes remaining locked on Solphi, though they wanted nothing more than to stare at the bedroom door in a vain attempt to look straight through it. “You need help on a job, or is this strictly a social visit?” She said the last with a grin, leaning back in her seat and propping her feet up on the table.

Lonely But Never Alone

Baby I'm Afraid To Sleep, Cause When I Do I Only Dream Of You

Solphi wondered if this was going to be a disaster. Was she making the right choice telling Lily? They hadn’t seen each other in a very long time and for all Solphi knew Lily and Sastre were on good terms again. That was extremely unlikely, but stranger things had happened. Solphi dealt with the supernatural and the impossible every day. Anything could happen and she’d be an idiot to think it couldn’t.

Walking over to the fridge, Solphi pulled out two beers, handing one to Lily before sitting across from her at the small table. She smiled warmly at her old friend. Solphi’s mind may have been racing, but her demeanor gave away none of the nervousness she was feeling. This had to be done. If something happened to Solphi she needed to make sure that Willow was taken care.

Her daughter.

The little girl that almost no one knew existed because Solphi was entirely too scared it would get back to Sastre. The man didn’t think bringing kids into the world was a good idea to begin with. If he had his way the human race would go extinct. No one would have children. In Sastre’s eyes it was wrong because he was too scared of all the supernatural horrors out there. He was a coward, and as soon as they’d gotten too close the Old Man had whispered in his ear and then just like that he disappeared.

“We do have a lot to catch up on,” Solphi told her. She sipped the beer, the light golden liquid leaving a bitter taste in her mouth. “How is everyone? Abbie? Lillian? Sastre?” The last name was quieter, not quite as eager to know of his well being.

She chuckled and shook her head. “Strictly social, though if you’re itching for a hunt we’re in the middle of New York. It won’t be hard to find something. If not topside than I’m sure there’s a monster or two lurking in the sewers beneath the city.”

Solphi glanced out the window at the tattered brick wall that was across from her firescape. It wasn’t an idea view, but Solphi picked the place for safety, not for views. The small apartment was rigged with wards, devils traps, salt lines, and much more to keep the monsters at bay. There was no way she was going to let anything get in.

“But I thought we could maybe just order a pizza? Catch up on the last few years. I bet there’s a hell of a lot that I’ve missed.

Lily noted the shift in Solphi’s tone when she asked about Sastre.

After what had happened between the two of them, Lily really couldn’t blame her. In fact, she wasn’t particularly thrilled with her brother these days either. For all intents and purposes, Sastre had abandoned her just as much as he’d abandoned Solphi. They were family, brother and sister, and he was the only one she really had left, but that didn’t seem to matter to him. After years of him pushing her away, Lily had finally had enough. They were through, utterly and completely. She didn’t want anything to do with him anymore.

“First off, I don’t know how Sastre is and I don’t really care,” Lily told her honestly, frowning a bit and sipping her beer. “As far as I’m concerned, he doesn’t exist anymore. I’m done trying to prove myself to him just to have him push me away over and over again.” Sighing and shaking her head, she added softly, “I just can’t do it anymore…”

That said, Lily decided to move on, not wishing to dwell on the matter any longer, and unwilling to admit that her brother’s constant coldness toward her hurt more than she let on.

“Lillian is really good,” she said, a smile replacing her earlier frown. “I’ve actually been seeing a lot more of her lately than I used to…”

She let her voice trail off a bit, unsure where to go from here. The truth was, Lily didn’t really know how Solphi would feel about her relationship with Brennan. The three of them had always been close, and Lily had never known Solphi to be particularly uncomfortable with this sort of thing, but it was still a little nerve-wracking. And, of course, telling her about Lizzie was going to be even harder. She’d kept the little girl a secret from everyone, even Solphi, the closest thing she had to a sister. Granted, Lily had thought Lizzie was dead, and didn’t want to bring her up at all, but still…

Taking a deep breath, Lily decided to just plunge ahead.

“Uh, Abbie is… Well… We’re sorta, like, together now.” Biting her nails, she let lowered her eyes a moment before continuing. “Like… together together…”

Lonely But Never Alone

Baby I'm Afraid To Sleep, Cause When I Do I Only Dream Of You

Solphi wasn’t really surprised that Lily and Sastre weren’t exactly on speaking terms. It had been tumultuous relationship back when Solphi had been in the picture. Then again Sastre seemed to have a tumultuous relationship with everyone. Mainly because he was a coward who put the weight of the world on his shoulders and acted as though he were the only capable of doing anything in this world. Sastre wasn’t the only hunter, but he liked to think he was, and that he was the best.

Still…

“I’m sorry, Lil. He’s still your brother and I know how much you look or looked up to him.” She shook her head, pulling out her cell phone to call for pizza. The aroma would no doubt wake the tyke sleeping in the other room. Solphi was going to have to let Lily know what was going on before Willow woke up or it might be a little awkward.

Solphi quickly ordered, making sure they both liked the toppings before hanging up, and leaning back in her seat. Then she almost choked on her beer, when Lily said that she and Abbie were together. Her dark eyes widened, surprise filling them to the brim.

“You’re what?!”

It took her a minute for the words to register. Solphi had known both Lily and Abbie for a long time. They’d all been close friends, but the truth is Solphi hadn’t even know Lily swung that way. It didn’t bother her, it was just…surprising. A slow smile spread across her face and she shook her head.

“Wow, I did not see that coming.” She chuckled softly, eyes sparkling with delight for her friends. “I’m happy for you guys. You both deserve to be happy. I bet Lillian is ecstatic too.”

Solphi sipped her beer, looking over Lily. “I thought something seemed different about you. Despite the anger at your brother you seem, I don’t know, lighter maybe?”

The demonologist shrugged, shaking her head. She was happy for her friends, she really was. Though she did imagine Sastre had something negative to say on the matter. He always had something negative to say. He could never just be happy. It was annoying and it honestly made Solphi want to shoot him sometimes.

“Lil?” Solphi set her beer on the table. “Can you keep a secr-“

Before Solphi got the chance to finish the sentence, she heard the door creep open. A little girl with long, unruly, dark hair, and blue eyes the same color as Sastre’s stumbled out of the room sleepily. One tiny hand was rubbing an eye, the other trailing a teddy bear behind her. Her pajama’s were purple with unicorns adorning them.

“Mommy?” She asked through heavy lidded eyes.

Well the element of surprise was there as Solphi closed her eyes for a long moment, before looking at Lily pleadingly even though the other woman had no idea what Solphi would ask of her. Getting up she went to the little girl and scooped her up in her arms.

“I’m here, baby.” The little girl snuggled shyly into Solphi, peeking out every so often at Lily. She clung to her teddy bear, sticking a thumb in her mouth, still groggy from sleep.

“Willow, this is your Aunt Lily. You remember me telling you about her right?” The little girl peeked shyly again and Solphi chuckled, kissing the top of the little girls head. “Lily, this is my daughter…your niece…Willow.”

I'm always planning for the worst
I SIGNED MY WILL RIGHT AFTER BIRTH
Lily was speechless.

Her mouth opened as if to speak, but the words just wouldn’t come out. Instead, she looked something like a fish out of water no doubt, her mouth just opening and closing, eyes wide in shock and disbelief. Solphi was… She and Sastre had a… Was it really possible…? But the evidence was right there in front of her, in the large blue eyes of the little girl in Solphi’s arms.

Sastre’s eyes.

“Oh my God,” she said softly, when her voice finally decided to start working again. “Oh my God…” It seemed to be the only thing she could say, the only thing that really, truly fit the situation. Closing her eyes for a moment, Lily finally opened them again and glanced at Solphi, lowering her voice. “Does he… I mean… he can’t know, can he?”

Looking back it Willow, Lily felt suddenly guilty, as her shock had apparently made the little girl uneasy. Not wanting to trouble her further, Lily put on a warm, kind smile and slowly approached, wonder replacing the earlier disbelief that had filled her eyes. Reaching out slowly, so as not to scare Willow, Lily lightly ran her fingers through the girl’s soft, dark hair.

“Hi, Willow,” she said, her smile broadening. “It’s nice to meet you, sweetie. God, you’re beautiful, you know that?” Chuckling softly, she returned her attention to Solphi, practically beaming.

“I can’t believe this! You’re a mom, Solph,” she said, laughing a bit and shaking her head. “She looks just like you too… Except for the eyes, at least. Still…” Shaking her head again, she glanced at Willow, still shocked but slowly warming to the idea of being an aunt.

It seemed like she’d be filling a lot of new roles in her life from now on. Other than the nightmare that had been her time with Carlisle, Lily had never really been anyone’s girlfriend until just recently, and her relationship with Brennan was still something that she was getting used to, though she wouldn’t change it for the world. Finding Lizzie alive after all these years had thrust the role of mother onto her as well, and while it was difficult to try and be a mother to the little girl and a hunter, Lily was confident that she’d find a balance eventually. And now, finding out that she had a little niece on top of everything else… it was amazing.

She had a family now. A real family. And that had always been all she ever really wanted…

“Well…” she began, deciding now was as good a time as any to tell Solphi about Lizzie, “considering the fact that you’ve always been like a sister to me… I guess that makes you an aunt too, Solph.”

She lowered her eyes, feeling suddenly ashamed told Solphi about Lizzie’s birth, and her loss. For years she’s just… buried it deep inside, unwilling to face it, unwilling to dredge it all back up. It was too painful, and still too fresh despite the years that had passed since her daughter’s birth, and apparent death. That had been the final straw, back then, when Carlisle had taken little Lizzie and used her as “bait,” with Lily too sick and weak to protect her. That night, Lily snapped, and when Carlisle returned, she’d waited until the proper moment, and she’d shot him in the back, leaving him for dead.

Luckily she hadn’t killed him, as it had been Carlisle himself—just recently—who had tracked her down and revealed that Lizzie was still alive. He’d never killed her at all, he’d merely hidden her away somewhere, knowing that he could use her for leverage someday if Lily ever tried to leave him. This confession had been his undoing, and Lily had stopped at nothing until she found her little girl once again. Yes, Carlisle was still out there, and he was still a thread, but Lizzie was safe now, and that was all that mattered.

Steeling herself, Lily looked back up and met Solphi’s eyes. “Six years ago, I had a little girl… I named her Lizzie, and for a long time I thought she was… was gone.” She paused, frowning, and then smiling a bit when she continued. “But I found her, Solph. I got her back...” Stopping again, she reached into her satchel and pulled out a couple pictures, taken just days ago at Lillian and Brennan’s shop.

“Looks like we’ve both missed a lot, huh?”

Lonely But Never Alone

Baby I'm Afraid To Sleep, Cause When I Do I Only Dream Of You

Solphi bounced the little girl in arms, chuckling at the shy demeanor and tussled curls. She knew that as soon as Willow got to know Lily that the youngest Raniari would wish the little girl was shy again. She’d speak as much as she could, fumbling her words sometimes, and quite possibly playing the up and down game. As soon as she went up, she’d want to go down. As soon as her toes touched the floor she’d want to go up. Willow loved attention. She loved to laugh and smile and Solphi just adored everything about her.

Balancing Willow on her hip she smiled at Lily. “Don’t let the shyness fool you. Give it ten minutes and she’ll be climbing into your lap.”

Solphi was grateful for Lily’s happy, if surprised reaction. She couldn’t blame her for being surprised. After all no one really knew. Sure Solphi’s family knew. Her parents watched Willow more often than not. It was mainly for her own safety as her parents were retired and if anything came out them they were fortified to keep Willow safe. They didn’t have any problem with Sastre never knowing he had such a wonderful daughter. They thought he was bad news from the start. Then again they never really wanted Solphi to fall in with a hunter. If it had to be a hunter though they would have preferred someone other than Sastre Quicksilver.

“No, he doesn’t,” She told Lily. “And I want to keep it that way. Knowing him he’ll either run farther away to keep her safe, or in some weird twisted way want to do the right thing and come back. I don’t want him to be with me because I had his child.”

It was true. Solphi may love Sastre with all her heart, but she’d long ago given up on him coming back or ever falling in love really. Maybe once he cared about her, but he had been the one to convince her that it would work out when she was ready to walk away. Maybe he just wanted that power, the one to away and not have to feel rejected.

“An aunt?” Solphi blinked at Lily, her eyebrows shooting skyward as she listened to the story. Walking over she took the picture from Lily, a smile creeping onto her features again at the adorable little girl. “Lizzie, I like it.” She sat down, sitting Willow on her lap.

The curious little girl stole peeks at Lily, before hiding her face in Solphi’s chest again. The process repeated as she became bolder and bolder stealing longer looks, watching Lily with childlike curiosity. “I’m really happy you found her Lily, and for you and Abby.”

Willow finally crawled off her mother’s lap, still dragging the tattered teddy as she cautiously approached Lily. Solphi kept talking knowing if she drew attention to it that Willow would simply back away.

“We have!” She laughed then. “I’m sorry, I just couldn’t bring myself to tell anyone. Not if it could get back to him.”

The doorbell rang just as Willow crept up to Lily and tugged on her sleeve, giving her a wide grin. “Hi!”

She gave a childlike squee of delight before the other woman answer, bouncing on her toes. Chuckling Solphi went to the door to retrieve the pizza.

I'm always planning for the worst
I SIGNED MY WILL RIGHT AFTER BIRTH
Lily nodded understanding when Solphi confessed her reasons for not wanting Sastre to find out.

The truth was, though, that Lily hadn’t even spoken to her brother for months, closer to a year, really. Though the siblings had once been close—with Lily even striving to emulate and impress her older brother—they’d long since gone their separate ways, due mostly to the fact that Sastre was always pushing her away and trying to distance himself. Eventually, Lily had simply gotten tired and disheartened, and she’d given up on Sastre Quicksilver, the hunter who had taken the place of her brother Florian.

When Solphi laid out the possibilities of what Sastre might do if he found out about Willow, Lily couldn’t help but chuckle, though there was little humor in it. She was exactly right, Lily had no doubt. The fact that Solphi new Sastre so well hurt Lily a bit, but it wasn’t really that she was hurt for herself, but rather for her friend. Solphi still loved Sastre, despite his being a complete ass, and Lily wondered if she still held out hope that someday he’d come back to her…

Lily knew, though, that that was unlikely, if not impossible.

When Willow finally crept close enough to tug on Lily’s sleeve, the young hunter smiled down at her brightly. Slowly, she slid down out of her chair to kneel before the little girl as Solphi answered the door. Now at eye-level with Willow, Lily really couldn’t believe how much the child resembled both her parents. She had Solphi’s shiny dark hair, as well as her general facial structure, but as they’d said earlier, the eyes—though large and wide as Solphi’s—were Sastre through and through. There was also something else about her, something that Lily couldn’t really put her finger on, that hinted that when she was pouting or upset about something, the little girl more than likely had her father’s scowl.

“Hi, I’m your Aunt Lily,” she finally said, smile still in place as she extended her hand to Willow. “Though… I’m pretty sure you already knew that, huh?” Laughing softly, she stuck her tongue out playfully at the little girl.

Lonely But Never Alone

Baby I'm Afraid To Sleep, Cause When I Do I Only Dream Of You

Solphi smiled and paid for the pizza, watching as Lily and Willow got better acquainted. The little girl giggled when Lily stuck her tongue out and the tyke then proceeded to reciprocate. Solphi chuckled and took the pizza, putting it on the kitchen counter. She got the plates out and threw a few slices on them for she and Lily. For Willow she took a portion of the pizza and cut it up to bite size bits for her to eat.

Carefully balancing them she brought the plates over, still watching as Willow proceeded to get to know Lily. The little girl bounced on her toes, hands at her mouth, covering a bright smile that scrunched her face. “All right short stuff. Time to eat.”

Willow’s eyes lit up. “Pizza, pizza!” She clapped her hands happily and ran over to Solphi. The young mother easily lifted her daughter in her arms and sat Willow on her lap, sliding her plate over. The toddler immediately started shoving the small pieces into her mouth, humming as she nommed happily.

Solphi kissed the top of her head and looked to Lily. “You’ll have to bring Lizzie over some time. I’d take Willow to the shop, but…I imagine Sastre still goes there from time to time whenever he either needs a place to hide or some time to recuperate. “ A bit of her smile fell away. “I can’t risk him finding out about her, Lil.”

Willow continued to happily nom, oblivious to the conversation that centered around her. Solphi looked up at Lily with sad, painfilled eyes. “I’m going to keep her safe. I’m going to make sure that no one, not even Sastre is able to hurt her.”

That was the truth. Solphi wasn’t going to let anyone lay a harmful hand on her daughter. She definitely wasn’t going to let Sastre know he had a daughter so he could be just as indecisive about their relationship as he had been with Solphi’s. In the end he had broken her heart, after building up her trust. It had been Solphi who didn’t want to get that close, and Sastre who told her things would work out. Now, she was a single mother raising her daughter while being a hunter.

I'm always planning for the worst
I SIGNED MY WILL RIGHT AFTER BIRTH
Lily couldn't help but smile at the pair of them as she ate.

Always having had a soft spot for children, Lily was elated to learn that she had a niece. And seeing Solphi with a daughter--while a bit strange at first--made Lily very happy. Motherhood suited her, that much was obvious, and even if the circumstances of Willow's birth weren't exactly perfect, Lily could tell that Solphi couldn't be happier...

Well, she thought, hiding a frown, I guess that's not entirely true...

But Sastre wasn't coming back, that much Lily knew.

"Honestly, you don't have to worry about Sastre coming by the shop," Lily said with a shrug and a snort. Making a face, she looked down at her pizza and chewed her lip a little as she continued. "Truth is, the second he found out about Lizzie, he stopped coming around. Says he doesn't want to get to know her, or even see her." This time Lily couldn't hide the hurt in her eyes. "Says it'll be better for her if she doesn't know about him..."

She could try to hide it all she wanted, but Lily knew deep inside that her brother's attitude toward her hurt far, far worse than she'd ever let anyone know. They'd been close once, such a long time ago now that it seemed like a completely different life--and in a way it was. But all that had changed the day Florian had become "Sastre Quicksilver" and cut all ties with his little sister, leaving her essentially all alone in the world.

She shook her head to clear it of these thoughts, shrugging again.

"Whatever, right? He's probably right, I guess," she said, looking back up at Solphi and Willow, forcing a light smile. "It's better if she doesn't know anything about him... Safer too." Flashing a more genuine smile, she reached across the table and lightly ruffled Willow's hair. "It's his loss though, right? He doesn't know what he's missing."

Lonely But Never Alone

Baby I'm Afraid To Sleep, Cause When I Do I Only Dream Of You

Solphi could hear the hurt in Lily’s voice, see it in her eyes. As much as Solphi loved Sastre she knew that Lily was wounded more deeply by him than Solphi ever could be. He was her brother and all he was doing was pushing everyone away. She imagined it was very lonely for Sastre. She didn’t understand how such a brave man could be such a coward.

Willow giggled when Lily ruffled her hair. Solphi couldn’t help but smile. “It is his loss, but it breaks our hearts.” She gave Lily a pointed look. “You don’t have to pretend with me. I know as well as you how well he is at breaking hearts.”

She gave Lily a sad smile of her own, and leaned back, leaving the pizza untouched. Willow however was having a merry time, pulling the cheese off, letting it stretch out and twirling it around. At certain points she’d eat some, but for the most part the food had become her latest arts and crafts project.

Solphi watched her daughter with amusement. There was nothing more precious to her on this earth, and she imagined that Lily felt the same about Lizzie. “We’ll have to set up a play date. Let the girls get to know each other. They are cousin’s afterall.”

The only thing of it was, is that when Willow was old enough she was going to ask about her father. She was going to know that Lily was her aunt, and that Lizzie was her sister, and when she learned about the supernatural she’d know that Darian couldn’t be her father, which at that point would only leave Sastre. She’d hate to have to tell Willow that Lily was only her aunt because they were close friends.

It was a story they were going to have to string carefully. However there was something else, that Solphi wanted to talk to Lily about. “Lils, I didn’t just call you here to introduce you to Willow. I do of course want you to get to know her, but –“ She sighed. “The thing of it is, my parents are getting on in years. If something happens to me, well I’m not confident in them taking care of her. They have the same lifestyle we do, but we both know the older you get, the less likely you are to survive.”

Solphi was rambling. She took a sip of her beer and decided to just get right too it. “I thought about it for a while, and I was sort of hoping that you would agree to be Willow’s Godmother. Both and you Abbie really. I think you two would raise her as your own, and take wonderful care of her.”

Willow’s face was a mess of cheese and pepperoni’s. Solphi couldn’t help but chuckle, and pluck some of it out of her hair. “So, Lily, are you up for the job?”

Lily nodded at Solphi's words about Sastre, but the truth was it just wasn't something she could talk about right now, and maybe not ever.

There was no way to describe what it felt like to have your only family member in the entire world simply stop caring about you. Every time Sastre ignored one of her calls, did anything else to push her a way, it was like a knife to her heart. Sure she had Abbie and her family, and Solphi, and now even Willow and Lizzie, but there had been a long time when she'd felt completely and utterly alone.

And it was all his fault.

Not wanting to dwell on these dark thoughts, Lily pushed them to the back of her mind. She knew they'd only fester there, become worse and more hateful, but in a way that was what she wanted. Maybe if she could learn to hate him, then she wouldn't miss him quite so much, and his actions toward her would hurt just a little less...

When Solphi confessed that there was another reason she'd asked Lily here, and she began speaking about her parents and their advancing age, the blonde hunter new something big was coming. But when her friend finally got right to the heart of it, Lily was admittedly shocked.

"You... You'd really want me to do that?" she asked. " 'Cause... I mean, I'm not even sure I'm gonna be really good at this whole 'Mom' thing, ya know? I've only had Lizzie back for a few weeks..."

Raising her hand to her mouth, Lily began biting her nail absently, hardly even realizing she was doing it. There was almost nothing that she wouldn't do for Solphi, because she knew that Solphi would do the same for her. And as Lily let her eyes settle on Willow again, and her lips couldn't help but tug themselves into a soft smile at the little girl's antics, she knew that there was no way she could say no.

"I'd... We'd love to be her godparents, Solphi... I just can't promise how good a job we'll do is all..."

You find your way under my skin. And I'm trying not to love you. But I hate the way I keep on giving In to you like I always do. Got your poison running through my veins. The way you pull me in. The way you chew me up. The way you spit me out. I keep coming back.

Solphi couldn’t help but laugh at Lily’s reaction. Honestly it was what she had been expecting, but still, it amused her, bringing a shine to her eyes that was filled with light heartedness. She really had missed her friends. After Sastre, Solphi had segregated herself. Maybe she shouldn’t have but heartache and bitterness can hurt a person. It can make them hide in the shadows away from everyone and anything that could hurt them.

The only thing that had saved Solphi’s sanity or perhaps destroyed it was Willow. She hadn’t expected to be pregnant after Sastre left. The morning sickness and fatigue had been undeniable though, and when she finally peed on the stick, the clear blue sign letting her know she was pregnant, Solphi had been frightened. As much as she wanted to go Lily and Brennan she knew it wasn’t right to divide their loyalties. It wasn’t right to force Sastre into something he didn’t want to be in.

Willow had changed Solphi’s world, for the better. It also brought with it a cacophony of new fears, worries, and woes to make sure that Willow was protected. It wasn’t easy raising a child when she was a hunter and Solphi knew she had to explore every possible avenue – including her untimely death. She knew that Willow would be safest with Lily and Brennan. Lillian would shield the girl, make sure no harm came to her. It would be Willow’s best shot.

“You’re insane. You’re a great mom, I can already tell just the way you take to Willow.” Solphi looked at her daughter adoringly. “And just look at the way she’s taken to you. You’re her family, and Sastre….well – “ Solphie shrugged. “Well I’m not forcing anything on him. You and Brennan would raise Willow as your own and I know that Lillian would help to keep her safe.”

Kissing the top of Willow’s head, Solphi closed her eyes, taking a moment just to be near her daughter. The two year old little girl with the dark curls was her life. Solphi wouldn’t put her in the hands of anyone she wouldn’t trust.

“Trust me when I say, if it came down to it, there’s no one else I’d rather have taking care of my little girl than you and Brennan.”

I'm always planning for the worst
I SIGNED MY WILL RIGHT AFTER BIRTH
Lily's expression relaxed, eyes shimmering with unshed tears.

The truth was, she had a serious self-esteem problem, and she had ever since her nightmare years with Carlisle. He'd beaten and belittled her so much that, in the end, she'd eventually started believing the things he told her. She was worthless. She was dirty. No one would ever love her. She was complete and total garbage... Even now, with her life finally coming together, and with Brennan at her side and Lizzie in her arms, Lily couldn't help but feel--in the back of her mind--that Carlisle had always been right about her.

Brennan had been trying to undo all of Carlisle's handiwork for months, reassuring Lily and trying to make her see the good in herself. That was to be expected though, since Brennan was her girlfriend, and had offered to help raise her child even. It wasn't that Lily didn't believe the witch, it was just... hard. Hard to change the way she'd thought about herself for so long.

But now, it seemed like Solphi must have seen some bit of worth in her too. Sure, Solphi was one of her best friends--more like a sister, really--but it just felt different hearing it from her. And maybe it was because the older woman hadn't bolstered Lily's burgeoning self-confidence with words, but with her actions.

She trusted Lily with the life of her little girl, and you couldn't really say much more about a person's worth than that, could you?

"I promise I won't let anything happen to her if I can help it," Lily said, smile widening even as she wiped at her eyes. "And... And thanks, Solphi. I know it sounds dumb, but... I can't even really explain how good this makes me feel..."
