Growing up on a farm gave Murphy the will power to overcome anything that stood in his way via perseverance. Inheriting his parents southern stubbornness, unless it risks something that he loves, Murphy not only will not, but cannot give on anything. He sees doing so as a sign of personal weakness, something that he fears greatly. Murphy is a simple man with simple tastes. he doesn't care for complexity in much of anything. In his opinion people make things to complicated and he just has had enough of it. Though he is far from the black and white morality of most hunters, there are certain lines one simply should not cross. He feels the same way when it comes to monsters, he doesn't really care if they live their lives in peace, but as soon as they start killing humans, then they have to go. It isn't their fault that they're a monster for the most part, some where just born that way, or were changed against their will, why punish them for just being alive? No, Murphy doesn't deal in absolutes, and those who do tend to get on his nerves quite easily.

On the outside, Murphy is a sarcastic bastard who's brutally honest and simply doesn't give a shit what other people think or do, this however is just the tip of the iceberg. Under all, he's got a heart that's big enough for the entire planet, monsters included. It's the fact that he cares so much about people that drives him to guard himself so well, He learned his lesson long ago about letting others know that he cared and won't make that mistake a second time. In addition, due to him loving things so much, he gets incredibly agitated when people don't care about anything, he is often quoted as saying "I fuckin' hate people, they destroy everything they touch." He uses his sarcasm, anger, and don't-give-a-care attitude to shelter his more sensitive side 'cause there's no way he'd survive with his heart on his sleeve. However, if you really know the man, then you know that he'll be there always for his family and friends. He's the guy you call for advice when you need someone to be straight with you, he's the hard worker you want to help you with your crops, and he's the hunter you want by your side.

His for mentioned sensitive side can easily be seen, to his utmost dismay, if one just looks hard enough. Between his incredible skill as a gardener and expansive soft spot for anything animal, Murph vents his love into things that won't hurt him, namely dogs and plants. In addition to this, the southern man has some artistic ability as well, specifically in painting and drawing. Though he would never admit it, Murphy never really wanted to go hunt things, he just wanted to have a good house, a fine woman, some kids, a garden, and a farm, but that option is long since gone. There was no way that he could let his little brother go at it alone and if there's one thing that can play the trump card on anything in Murphy's life, it's Connor. So he just keeps his little hobbies alive as much as he can while on the road, though gardening has proved quite hard when you live out of a car and motel rooms.

Murphy is the kind of guy who either loves something, or really doesn't give a flying fuck about it. For example, he adores firearms, dark lagers, and good food, thus he will not accept anything less than absolutely quality in all of these. He won't fire a weapon that's cheaply made, drink a beer that he can see his hand through, or eat a dish that hasn't been prepared with quality ingredients. some would assert that he has expensive taste, which is not true, he just likes the things he likes to be of actual worth. In contrast to this, the things he doesn't care about, like his clothes, where he sleeps, or how people live their lives, he just doesn't give a shit about. As long his clothes still function and are comfortable he'll wear them, as long as he can take his daily 0500-0900 nap, he doesn't care if it's in a car or in a fluffy motel bed, and as long as they don't turn into monsters, he couldn't care less what people do. He's just that kind of guy,

When Murphy gets angry or is overcome by an emotion that he can't handle, he simply turns off, sometimes literally. His little philosophy is if it can't be fixed with a nap, it can't be fixed at all. When problem arises, he blocks everything out for however long it takes him to come to a calm state of mind and brain storm solutions. He isn't the kind to freak out about a lot of things and is great in a crisis. if there's an emotion he can't handle, however, he curls up, and sleeps, knowing that when he awakes he will once again be in control of it. See, Murphy does his best to suppress feelings as to insure that they don't get in the way and when something is strong enough to get through, he doesn't really know what to do with himself.

Usually, Murphy eats only the healthiest of foods and refuses to binge on anything that isn't natural, but when shit goes down and he's upset, you bet your ass he has his McDouble cravings. If someone chastised him or says "I thought you were a health nut." an instantaneous glare dawns the mans face and a reply of"I'm sick, I'm tired, and I'm angry, would you rather me crack your skull on the pavement instead?" or something of the like. If there's one thing that Murphy can't stand, it's being told what he should and shouldn't do, no matter what it is concerning. He can take advice as long as it is given as advice and not orders, but as soon as someone attempts to assert their superiority, Murphy shuts down and out comes the fangs. wen this man's annoyed to say he's sarcastic and ruthless is an understatement. This is very different than when he is actually angry. Murphy gets annoyed far easier than he is angered, hell, he can't remember the last time he was legitimately pissed off, it was most likely at his brother, 'cause no one can get under your skin like family can.

All in all, Murphy is a simple southern man with giant sense of humor, a penchant for solving problems, and a protector of what he loves.

history

As the third son of the St. James family, Murphy grew up in a broken home, but it was a home to him none the less. With a father that spent more time with his whiskey than with his sons and a mother who seemingly never had known a healthy day in her life, the St. James boys were rough around the edges, and for some of them, all the way through. Boys did as boys would do and the older ones beat on the younger ones and the drunk of a father would beat a little on all the boys but before any bones were broken a sly and vicious glare from mama never failed to bring silence and compliance.

By some miracle of god, Murphy made it to high school where he, unlike his two older brothers, actually attempted to do well, and do well he did. His education gave him an outlet from all the drama that permeated his home life and his report cards always brought a smile to his mother thin, chapped lips.He never brought his intelligence to light to anyone other than his teachers and his mother, for his older brothers had a penchant for punching him every time he out did them in anything so he remained quiet and pretended to be as dull as them. There were, however, a few things that incurred the amusement of his brothers that he could not hide, his artistic skill and love of gardening namely. He became known as the softy of the family and had to make up for this via sarcasm, stupid stunts, and weight lifting, though never really got out of that label.

Though it happened on a few occasions through out high school, it wasn't really until he graduated that Murphy's father took him on monster hunts frequently. The family business turned out to be another thing that Murphy was good at, but not something he was overly fond of. See he'd been told about what was lurking in the dark on his sixteenth birthday and slowly but surely became a chronic insomniac. no matter what he tried, there was noway he could sleep when the sun was down and didn't want any more worry to disrupt what little rest he did get in the wee hours of the morning. He received an offer from a local college for a scholarship and was one year into his degree in architecture when his youngest brother, Connor, graduated and was told about the business, and showed a great deal of interest in it, to Murphy's dismay.

When he learned of Connor's ambition to make hunting his life, Murphy dropped out of college and came home. Though he wanted to be more than his father and older brothers, family came first. He knew that the older two wouldn't look out for Connor and that their father was about as useless banette on a bazuka so it fell to Murphy to make sure his little brother didn't get himself killed. Though he wasn't very good at showing it or letting it be known, Murphy had always looked out for Connor and wasn't about to stop when his own personal goals came into conflict. It's been this way for almost two decades and his life isn't about to change.

The sun dropped below the horizon sending cascades of red/gold light across the ever darkening sky as Murphy St. James stood alone on a hill overlooking a great valley. The scent of towering Georgia pines filled his nostrils and the gentle melody of yellow bellied cuckoo's resonated in his ears, bringing a small smile to his parched lips. The humid summer air felt more alike to water than to oxygen as his inhaled deeply, sweat dripping from his brow and mud splattered across his lower extremities. Two hours he had hiked to come to this particular baring with nothing but his own instincts guiding him. For this place was on no map, there was no path that lead to this overlook, where he stood was uncharted by society and only traversed by those who already knew where it was. A quiet place, a peaceful place, and to some, a sacred place, and though he agreed with all of these sentiments, it was not prayer or meditation that had brought him forth, and for once it was not a hunt either, but rather a simple task of capturing the Georgia sunset on a canvas.

Placing his ruck sack on the ground with a heavy thud, Murphy took in the peaceful scene for a moment then began to setup his travel easel with veteran hands. In seconds the four foot wooden stand was set and a blank canvas placed just right, in a few more his pallet was out and full of paint and his hand poised to begin its long awaited work. Taking a good look at the vision of which he was about to replicate, he inhaled deeply and closed his eyes as if he were breathing in every shade of the sunset, every green leaf of the monstrous Georgia pines, every curve of the earth and every ounce of moisture in the air. Exhaling slowly, he opened his eyes and began to paint.

Though in a race against the night, his stokes were smooth and full of intention as his masterpiece slowly came to life. This was his peace, this was his payment for everything he had done, every person he had saved, this was the sole perk of his profession, this moment. He needed no permission, no sick day to take off into the wilderness to center his thoughts. He had no career to cling to or retirement fund to pour his paychecks into, just this canvas, just this painting. He knew that had he not chosen this path, his life would be different, however there was no way to take back twenty years of hunting nor would he elect to do so even if he could. His fate had been sealed the moment he and he was okay with that. He was born into this, this almost primal existence of kill or be killed, this eternal hunt. He was made whole by this peaceful knowing that he'd probably never see old age, that one day the very things he hunted would hunt him and he wouldn't be able to run fast enough. He was content with this, knowing that he would be killed by the hunt just as he lived by it.

The last few strokes of his sunset were struck and he took a pace back to admire his work. It had taken only an hour but the darkness had gathered as to mute all that existed outside his lanterns glow. It wasn't that he feared the night, or even what lurked in its mysterious depths, for he knew them well, it was what he didn't know that caused him woe, that robbed him of his slumber. Placing his newly finished painting at the base of a tree, Murphy packed up his supplied, picked up his lantern, and began his hike back home, leaving his painting for whomever came here after him with a letter saying "this is for you, my friend, take it and take care of it. Let it lighting your home and lighten your heart. "

MURPHY ST. JAMES - May 30, 2012 02:57 AM (GMT)
Complete :)

KALISTA - May 30, 2012 03:35 PM (GMT)
Hey, Stitch, I can now officially welcome you to SS! I'm Kalista, and I'll be helping you through the approval process.

First and foremost, we'll need Zombie's permission for you to make Connor's sibling. I'll have him post here if everything looks good.

As for the application itself, it was pretty good overall. There are just a couple things that need to be touched up.

First is his history. If you could go into a little more detail, it would really help us get a better feel for what he's been through and how it's shaped him. The fact that his dad and his brothers all hunt came as a bit of a shock, but I'm sure there were signs when he was younger, even if he didn't recognize them. Were they gone all the time? Did they come home injured a lot? Where did Murphy get his training?

Second is his RP sample. We like to get a feel for how your character will fit in and interact with other characters, so I'd like to see him interacting with someone, not just internalizing. You can have it be on his way to or from the mountain if you'd like so you don't have to rewrite the whole thing.

The last one was more general. I had no problem reading your writing, but I noticed quite a few punctuation and capitalization errors, and some run-on sentences. While you're touching up the history and RP sample, if you could just go back through and fix up the punctuation and capitalized letters at the beginnings and ends of your sentences and break them up a little more, it'll make for a much easier read. It might also help to break up the paragraphs a little as well. Just keep these things in mind when you're posting. Like I said, it wasn't a bad read, it just needs a little polishing up. ;)

Just post a reply here to let me know when you're ready for me to review again, and I'll drop Zombie a note to look over this as well.
