Chuck isn’t exactly your stereotypical prophet of God—no long robe, no sandals or beard or staff. Well, he does have a beard but that’s just because he can never be bothered to shave in between the visions and writing and dealing with the Apocalypse. He hates confrontation—whether it’s physical fighting or a verbal confrontation, Chuck is much more likely to avoid and run then stand up for himself or fight back. It takes a lot of prodding to get him to take a stand at all but, when enough prodding is given or when the lives of others are at stake, Chuck will get the job done. He doesn’t possess the way with women that Dean has and only has really had a handful of girlfriends in his life nor the persuasive nature that Sam finds instinctual (in fact he’s a bit jealous of those types of people), but Chuck gets by just fine.

Chuck is also a bit of an introvert, never really sure how to deal with outgoing people or any kind of people in large groups. He’s horrible at speaking in public. He’s not the type to go out to a bar or some party at night, instead he’d much prefer to stay at home and write or drink or pay a call to one of his ‘friends’. He needs other people around him or else he would stay in his house all day with his books and his visions and do little else and end up going completely mad because of it. But underneath his social awkwardness and nervous disposition is a guy who knows a surprising amount about people and can deliver very wise advice about the nature of humans and faith and subjects like that. Perhaps it’s just some natural quality or perhaps it’s because he’s been living vicariously through Sam and Dean (though unknowingly until recently) for the better part of five years but whatever it is Chuck has his moments of being unexpectedly wise.

Chuck was born in a very small town smack in the middle of the state of Missouri to his mother and father. The family was blue collar, lower class people and Chuck never had much growing up—but his parents made sure their son got what he needed and for that Chuck will always be thankful. He was a quiet, kind, bookish kid even in childhood, having a small and select group of friends but within that circle was well liked. It was after his first year in middle school that the family started moving around as his father chased jobs. Chuck hated the constant swirl of new faces and new towns but didn’t protest much, understanding that if his father didn’t move them around they’d end up on the streets. Chuck went to two high schools during his four years, half at one and half at the other but--like any quiet kid—his experience at both schools was difficult due to bully’s but largely uneventful for the future prophet of God.

You’d never guess looking at the guy today but Chuck did well in high school and got into a good university just two hours’ drive from his home with enough financial aid that he wasn’t going to end up paying off loans until he was 80. He was just starting his junior year in college when his parents died, black ice and a lack of street lamps and a deep ditch on the side of the road being blamed as the culprits. It was here Chuck took a year off from school, sinking into a depression for the better part of it before he finally sought help in the form of therapy and eventually picked himself back up.

A year and a half after taking his leave of absence Chuck finished his undergraduate program and was well into grad school, having majored in English Literature and planning on becoming a teacher, when the visions started. At first they were just strange and slightly painful dreams that an Advil and a few shots of bourbon would chase away but eventually things grew worse and worse. With each passing month the dreams grew more and more vivid until finally Chuck felt as if he knew the subjects of his dreams like they were actual people. That was all well and good but as the dreams grew more vivid, more frequent, so did the headaches that accompanied them until finally Chuck was forced to drop out of graduate school—sighting medical problems as the reason behind it.

He tried to get a job with the BA he’d earned in his undergraduate program but again the visions changed his plans as, by that time, they had become at least a bi-nightly event. Chuck switched to just trying to get any job he could find and did alright for a while, never working nights and getting as many hours as he could during the afternoon shifts but eventually that too was thwarted. By the time he was 33 years old he was getting desperate, the bills piling up and the landlords almost knocking down his door demanding rent or mortgage payments. It was then Chuck found his ‘saving grace’: turning his strange and vivid dreams into novels and trying to get published.

Writing had never exactly been his strong suit—he’d always been better and reading and explaining literature then producing it—but apparently an up and coming publishing house though he was good enough and started to publish him under the pen name Carver Edlund. Chuck’s ‘Supernatural’ wasn’t exactly the Harry Potter of its day but he did well enough, enough for him to move out of his miniscule apartment and buy an old house in Kripke’s Hollow where he lives to this day. Chuck was in the middle of writing his 25th novel ‘Lazarus Rising’ when the publishing company dropped him and none other than Sam and Dean Winchester came straight out of his dreams and were knocking on his door. The rest is, as they say, history.
