She enjoys reading, mostly fantasy stories and other similar books, things that offer an escape from her day to day life. Cooking is something else that she likes, even though more often than not it’s part of her job; cooking reminds her of the good times that she’s lost: being in the kitchen with her husband and children, and being surrounded by people who loved her. Dominique also likes to take long walks and bike rides through the countryside.

Being alone is hands down the worst part of Dominique’s life. To have grown old without her husband, and without her children, has literally been hell for her. Add to that the long, nightmarish years spent in an asylum after the vampire attack that destroyed her home and—she thinks—killed her family, and you get a very sad, lonely existence. She hates fire, and to see parents who treat their children badly. Anyone who cheats on their partner in a relationship disgusts her also.

Dominique married and started her family young. At sixteen she was married to Henri Raniari, and at seventeen the pair welcomed their first child, Darian, into the world. Henri’s family had long been the servants of the LeDucs, a well-to-do line family that owned an estate in the country known as “Gryphon’s Hollow.” Dominique easily fell into the role of housekeeper for the estate, and with Henri as head cook, she often helped him out in the kitchen as well.

The LeDuc family always treated their servants with the utmost respect, and Dominique was no exception. Like the other Raniaris, she was more like a part of the LeDuc family than just a servant, and her life was very comfortable and good while living and working at Gryphon’s Hollow.

As the years passed, she and Henri welcomed two more children into the world: a son whom they named Florian, and Lily, a baby girl. Florian and Darian grew close with Julien LeDuc, the heir to the family fortune, and they were all like brothers, and almost completely inseparable. At Gryphon’s Hollow, everyone looked out for each other, and for each other’s children, and everything seemed perfect and safe…

One night, though, everything fell apart.

A band of vampires attacked the estate, murdering everyone and burning all of Gryphon’s Hollow to the ground. Buried beneath the burning wreckage and left for dead, Dominique knew that she’d lost everything. Emergency services eventually arrived and found her, and after weeks of recovery, she learned that she was the only survivor of what was thought to be a horrible accident. Her husband, her children, all of her friends and family had all burned with Gryphon’s Hollow.

At first, her claims that vampires had been responsible were shrugged off. After all, she was a grieving woman who had lost everything, and she needed time to recover. Eventually, though, people began to worry about the wild stories she told: about men and women who couldn’t be killed, and who greedily drank the blood of their victims. Thinking her to be mentally unstable after the “accident” Dominique’s doctors had her admitted to an asylum.

She spent the next fifteen years there, being “cured” of her supposed madness. Eventually, even she came to believe that what she’d seen and experienced had just been cooked up by a mind that had simply been through too much in such a short period of time. When she was released at last, Dominique went back to doing the only thing she really knew: being a housekeeper and sometime cook.

Now she keeps pretty much to herself, walking to and from her various jobs around Avignon, where she has a small apartment. She doesn’t have any close friends, and spends most of her free time reading or taking long walks or bike rides through the gorgeous French countryside. She has picked up a fair amount of English over the years, and though she still has a lot to learn, she can converse well enough in the language, if a bit slowly.

Dominique still mourns for the family she’s lost, and somewhere in the back of her mind, she can’t help but hope that the authorities were wrong… and that her family might still be out there somewhere, waiting for her.
