Daydreaming, Waterheart wonders...

[Strix Moonwing]

A water-colored she-cat sprang from rock to rock on the Square Islands. Waterheart's bright blue eyes glowed with pleasure as she looked into the water below. "What a beautiful day for a swim." She thought. She slid into the water and looked around. The forest beyond the Islandclan terroritory could be seen. Waterheart wondered about the other cats and creatures living there. Maybe she could go there someday.

"Hello," said Rockpelt, diving into the water quickly and swimming over to the pensive cat. HE saw her looking towards the forest. The IslandClan cats never went there. "It looks like a nice place to live, but I prefer the water," mewed Rockpelt. He took another glance at the forest. This is where most of IslandClan originated-from the bobcats and kittypets that lived it the forest but loved the water and islands. Of course, there were cats desended from ThunderClan too, but it was mostly from the other cats. HE wondered why those cats lived there in the first place.

Waterheart blinked and nodded but didn't seem to be really listening. She was daydreaming about what it would be like to live underneath the tops of trees. Oh the adventures! She sighed. "Rockpelt, I know that us Island Clan are destined to live near water but....wouldn't it be nice to explore some of the other places...on land?" Her eyes glowed brightly. Sometimes the cats wondered why she was called Waterheart, her heart at times seemed to be everywhere but in the water.

Rockpelt tilted his head. His grey pelt glittered from the water dribbling out of it. He turned to the blueish cat and mewed, "Perhaps. I'm sure that Cattailstorm has a hidden lust for the Forest of Bobcats, being once part of one of the clans that used to be there, but, even if we do decide to explore, our home will always be on the islands and in the water." He was sure-or at least, pretty sure-that Waterheart would agree. She did love to swim. But maybe she really did want to live in land. He hoped that she was happy here, where IslandClan belonged, though...

Waterheart sighed and looked at herself in the water's surface. She could barely see her reflection in the water because of her water hued fur. The only thing that stood out in the water's surface was her pure white star on her forehead. Cats, just be looking at her, would know that she belonged in the water. She, herself, knew that her heart truelly belonged in near the water's side....but yet, sometimes it wanted more.

She turned her clear blue eyes to Rockpelt. They were filled with the look of a far off dream...something that you knew that you wanted but couldn't grasp. "Rockpelt...have you felt like you belong somewhere but really you didn't but you really want to and you don't at the same time and yet....oh I don't know! Do you know what I mean?"

She turned and stared at the islands she grew up on. "Sometimes, Rockpelt....I feel like something is pulling me away from Islandclan. I love Islandclan more than anything and I know that my heart belongs in the water, but something just keeps pulling me away and I don't know what."

Rockpelt sighed. He remembered his mate... the severing... yes. He remembered the sorrow on her demeanor as she glared and they both ran into the wilderness, but not together. He stared at the water, at the islands. He knew what she meant, yes. Rockpelt then swiveled his head towards the she-cat, her head the color of storm clouds reflected. He nodded his gray head quietly.

"Yes, I do. I remember..." Rockpelt's mew trail into the sky. Then he continued, "I remember when me and my mate broke our relationship. I loved her....I still sometimes feel like I belong to her, in her soul. That's what's troubling you, I think-it's like an invisible magnet," he paused, not sure what to say next. He shrugged nervously, then continued.

"It might be that, but not as strong. I know your a loyal cat, and....I mean, I couldn't imagine IslandClan without you-you're loyal, I know, maybe it will just be for a short time... I don't know." He finished, nervous. His blue eyes darted around. Like a dragonfly, the perched on Waterheart. Then, he turned and dipped his paw in the water, thinking, almost meditating. He hoped fervently that the loyal-or, at least he hoped so-and courageous soul wouldn't break from the clan. He tried to convince his soul completely that there was no chance. He couldn't.

Waterheart stared at the forest for a long time without blinking. Slowing her gaze turned to the water's surface. She thought of the islands, the water she loved, and of all her friends. She would never have the strength to leave them. She belonged here as her heart was meant to be part of the waters.

But as she thought of this and image of a distant land filled her head. It had neither water or land. All it was a golden plain. She blinked and the image was gone. Was this place the one calling her? She turned to Rockpelt and wished, more than anything, that she could be like him. He was so loyal, so strong. Even when his mate left he would not leave his clan.

Would she be the same? This Waterheart could not answer. She knew the answer she wanted but would it be the true one?

"Yes Rockpelt." She mewed softly, voice crackly alittle, "Maybe...it is just a phrase. The feeling might go away....soon." She sighed and continued in a stronger voice. "I couldn't imagine a life without you either. You're my best friend...and...thanks."

Hope filled Rockpelt's blue eyes. He knew she was loyal, and, although she was his best friend, he wasn't sure if he would go with her if she left. Maybe. He had wondered about the mainland, too, and he turned his grayish head to stare at the twoleg nests and forest that looked like it went on and on and never stopped at the Sun Drown Place, although he knew it did. "Thank you, as well," he meowed hopefully.
