Appearance: Zelgadis is of slightly below average height and build. He has stonelike skin that is pale blue in colour, and his silver-blue hair is very wirelike, both effects of the curse that transformed him into his present state. He dresses very simply.

Personality: Intelligent and driven, Zelgadis prefers to keep up a very mysterious and cool-headed front. In weaker moments, he can become very flustered and is easily frustrated by the occasionally weird or aimless behavior of his closest friends. In the end, however, they are his friends, and Zel will always come through in a pinch.

Skills: Zelgadis is a talented swordsman, although not at Gourry's level, and is a good logical thinker. His invulnerability to sharp weapons is a useful quality, and his unusual weight is another, although it has caused him grief in the past. Zel also appears to have some musical inclinations.

Spells and Powers: Zelgadis possesses some knowledge of black magic as well as basic healing spells, but his real skill is found in shamanist magic, in which his ability is considerable. Among many elemental spells and spirit magic, Zel has the ability to cast the Ra Tilt, the most powerful spell in Astral magic.

Weapons & Equipment: Zel travels light, carrying a sword and a canteen.

Weaknesses: Zel can be both extremely self-conscious and extremely arrogant, depending on the situation, and doesn't always handle emotional situations very well. His desire to find a cure for his current physical state has sometimes bordered on an obsession and has made him act selfishly in the past.

History: Zelgadis is the great-grandson of the famous priest Rezo. It was Rezo, influenced by the dark lord Shabranigdo who transformed Zel into a chimera, a perversion of his desire to become "strong." Zel was (understandably) extremely bitter and he made it his life mission to destroy Rezo and/or restore his body to its previous, human state.

Although Rezo was eventually defeated, Zel still hasn't found a cure, and he is still searching. Nevertheless, he seems unable to avoiding putting his quest on hold every now and then to help Lina and the others save the world one more time.
