As Connor was leaving the mall he glanced at the bar across the street. Through the window he saw his cousin Najima sitting at the bar by himself. He called Sakira. "You might want to come collect your brother," he said. "He's drinking alone at the Veronaville Pub after dark."
"Thanks," she said with a sigh. "I'll make sure he gets home OK."
"The same. Talk to you soon."
He drove home, Katrina on his mind, but when he arrived it was to find that his driveway was empty. No car. Huh. She must have gone out. He parked the cruiser on the street and took the stairs two at a time. Inside the lights were on and jazz played lightly on the stereo. Katrina emerged from the bedroom, wearing a sexy nightie.
"Hi," he said. "Is the car in the shop?"
"What? No. It's in the driveway."
"Uh, no, it's not." He sighed. "I think it's been stolen." Janie came and put her nose under his hand. "Some watchdog you are."
"She might have barked, I don't know. I wasn't home for part of the day. I took a cab to lunch with the girls."
"Did you notice the car when you got home?"
"I don't remember."
"I'd better report it." He called the station and when he hung up he said, "I need a drink."
She poured him one and they went to sit on the sofa.
"Nice negligee," he said.
"You're too far away."
"This better?" She climbed into his lap.
"Much. How are the girls?"
"Pregnant. Every single one of them except me and Sakira."
"Yep. Sure seems that way. Even Madison is pregnant."
"Uh huh. She and Aidan are getting married a little earlier than planned."
"I'll have to stop by and congratulate them."
"How was your first day on the job, officer?"
"Honestly? It sucked. I'm not popular and I had to do a stakeout on a roof."
"Poor baby." She nuzzled his neck.
He set down his drink and slid his hand up her skirt. "Uh huh."
"Want me to make it better?" she asked.
"Uh huh," he said, pushing her down on the couch. He heard a whimpering noise. "I'm sorry. Did I hurt you?"
"Um, no." She bit her lip. "That was probably Max."
"Remember how you said I could have two dogs?"
He raised an eyebrow.
"Well, there was this puppy and he was cold and lost and no one seems to be looking for him. I called the shelter after I brought him home and no one reported a puppy missing."
He sat up. "Better go see why he's whimpering."
"Come on," she said, "I'll introduce you."
Max was a black puppy with a long tail, floppy ears and underbelly markings like a Rottweiler. He had enormous paws. He was upset because the box he was in was too high for him to jump out of.
"He's going to be huge, isn't he."
"Probably." She picked Max up and looked at Connor with huge puppy eyes of her own. "He's really sweet."
"Hey, Max," Connor said, holding out his hand. The puppy sniffed him and then licked his fingers.
"He likes you."
"Maybe. And maybe I just taste good," Connor said. "Well, next time there's a burglar he and Janie can eat him."
"So, he can stay?" She put the puppy down and he toddled off to eat his food.
"He can stay."
She threw her arms around his neck.
"Do you need to take care of him right now?" Connor asked.
"He's fine," she said, taking him by the hand. "I think someone else needs taking care of first."

I think there's country song to be written about Connor's difficult life. Fortunately, Katrina is there to share it with him.

Yes - she is very good for him. And I suspect she too will be expecting before too long!
I want to die peacefully, in my sleep, like my grandfather...
Not screaming in fear, like his passengers.

Katrina sure seems to like her big dogs. Sort of like me, then.
