"Thank you all for coming," Connor said. All around the room people were eying one another uncomfortably, keeping their distance. The caterers, at Connor's request, had served the food and left ten minutes before sundown. There was no band, just a nice stereo system. Just family. "It means a lot to Katrina and me that you all are here," he continued. "If you'll please all take your seats we'll get started soon."
Fiona sat down front and center, as if daring anyone to stop her, and after a moment Madison sat down next to her. Connor could have kissed her. The other guests slowly took their seats and Aidan picked up a remote and started the stereo, Katrina's cue to enter. And then she was walking toward him on her father's arm and there could have been a war going on and he would not have noticed. She was so beautiful. He was so lucky. She smiled at him, her wide, mischievous smile, and he smiled back, holding out his hands to her. She came and stood with him under the arch. ![]() "I, Connor, take thee, Katrina, for my lawful wedded wife, to love and to cherish, to honor and care for, in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad, and forsaking all others to love only you. I promise to listen to you, to be honest and open and worthy of your trust. My heart is yours, my life is with you, and I promise never to forget how very very lucky that makes me." A few people chuckled as he put the ring on her finger. She smiled at him, her eyes filled with laughter and he remembered suddenly being ten and wanting to marry a girl with dark hair and laughing brown eyes. And now he was getting his wish. "I, Katrina, take thee, Connor, for my lawful wedded husband, to love and to cherish, to honor and care for, in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad, and forsaking all others to love only you. I promise to give you space when you need it, be there when you need me, to believe and trust in you, to be your partner and your support. I promise to be honest with you, to listen to you, to play and laugh and fight with you, but never to leave you. I love you," she said, putting the ring on his finger. "Oh," she said, her eyes moving to a small table to the side of the wedding arch, upon which stood Connor's wedding present to her, a small statuette. "A horse?" A few people laughed out loud. "You said you wanted horses at your wedding." "I was five." More chuckles. "Doesn't matter." He grinned at her. "Kiss me." People were clapping and throwing rose petals but they might as well have not been there. All that mattered to Connor in that moment was Katrina, his hands on her waist, her hair tickling his face, his lips on hers. His love, his Katrina. His wife. Next Chapter -------------------- |
