The room erupted in noise. "What? How? When?"
Kai held up his hand. "I found Dad living in a shack in the mountains. He went there with the dog after . . . someone hit Eureka with their car and Dad found a way to bring him back. "So then he started trying it on people." "People?" Zuli looked ill. "As in, more than one?" "His first try was a failure. He brought Kent Capp back as a zombie." "WHAT?" Najima stared at his brother. "That's . . . " "Horrible," Elizabeth said, quietly. "Poor Kent." "Poor Bianca," Kai said. "He went looking for her. Jack Roseland found out about it. He's out for Dad's blood." "Who can blame him?" Zuli said. "So then he tried it on Mom?" Takeo asked, frowning. "I'm going to kill him," Najima said. "He said he'd figured out where he went wrong," Kai said. "Frankly, I'm worried for his sanity. He's obsessed." "Is she . . . " Zuli said, "you know, a . . ." "A zombie? No. She seems fine." Silence fell. Sakira sat in shock for a full minute, then stood up and walked out of the room. Takeo followed her. "You OK?" "What? Yes," she said, her mind racing. Mom was back? That meant-- "I just, have to go, that's all. Tell the others goodbye." "Sakira, I'm worried about you." "Don't be," she said, turning to smile at him. "I just . . . need time to process this." "Well, OK. If you need anything, just give us a call, OK?" "Yes, OK." "Though I suppose you've got your own family, huh. Too bad Kai didn't schedule this at night so your man could come." Her man. She'd forgotten that her family didn't know, yet. Hold it togther, Sakira. Now is not the time. "I expect he just forgot." "Some news, huh." "Yes." "You're sure you're--" "Yes." "Well, OK." He looked doubtful but turned and went back inside. Taking a deep breath to steady her nerves, Sakira conjured up her broom and took to the skies. A shack in the mountains. She remembered just such a shack. She and Adriel had stumbled upon it on one of their walks, a hundred years ago when things were simpler. If her dad could bring one person back, he could bring two.
