CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR:

Ti Amo

There was nothing that pleased Liz more than going to bed after a hard, long day.

As she lay under the warm blankets on her bed and staring up at the ceiling, she thought of all the things that had happened that day. She been caught shoplifting (the memory of it made her smile just a little), she had found Vince with another woman, Lily’s dad had turned up unexpectedly at the worst possible time, she had told Lily everything that had happened between them and she had tidied up the guest bedroom for Daniel to have until he found a proper place for himself. It had indeed been a busy day. How could so much happen in just 12 hours?

Almost numb with fatigue, Liz closed her eyes, rolled over and snuggled up under the blankets. But she hadn’t even had time to think of falling asleep when she heard a muffled male voice outside.

What is it now? Liz thought irritably as she unwillingly got out of bed.

She got dressed quickly and made for the balcony, rubbing her tired eyes. An opera like mail voice was booming from the garden. Liz couldn’t understand what he was singing, it didn’t seem to be simlish. Maybe simtalien or spamnish? What was an opera singer doing in her garden anyway?

Liz stepped out onto the balcony and walked over to the railing. She squinted into the darkness and saw a dark shadow on one knee on the garden path. One by one the lamps on the path lit up revealing who the opera singer was. Her heart did a summersault inside her chest. It was Vince!

A rapidly growing smile appeared on Liz’s lips. He could sing? In simtalien?

Liz felt her face grow hot. This was so wonderfully romantic. Her heart was screaming ‘I love you, I love you, I love you’ with every heart beat.

Ti amoooooo!” Vince finished dramatically.

He got up and bowed low and elegantly to Liz’s cries of “Bravo! Bravo!” and applause, sending blow kisses here and there.

“Thank you, thank you very much.” He said.

“I didn’t know you could sing!” Liz said breathlessly, still applauding.

Liz couldn't see Vince’s face from such a distance but she knew he was smiling.

“Am I forgiven, my Juliet?” Vince called and bowed again.

Liz smiled.

“I think you could be. But that still doesn’t explain what you did. I want an explanation, Vince.”

She had expected him to get irritated, maybe even a bit angry but to her astonishment, Vince sounded happy when he said, “Ah, I knew you’d say that and that’s why I got something fixed for us.”

He took a step backwards, bowed again and blew her a kiss.

“’Til the next time we meet, mia tesoro.”

“But when will that be?”

“Just keep your eyes peeled and your ears sharp.”

Confused and taken aback, she watched Vince walk up the garden path without a proper explanation. She heard someone’s footsteps behind her and soon Daniel was standing beside her, leaning on the railing.

They both looked at where Vince had been. Neither of them said anything. The air was cool against Liz’s skin and the sound of crickets filled her ears. Somewhere in the distant a police siren sounded.

It was Daniel who spoke first.

“He seems a good guy for you.”

Liz thought for a moment and sighed romantically.

“He’s not just good. He’s perfect.”
