Title: Chapter 87: Cleaning Up the Mess

Connor Patrick's life might be irrevocably changing that night, but Jack felt transformed as well. He felt free, lighter, the anger he'd been carrying for so long no longer weighing him down. He felt giddy, like doing something nice for someone.

So he went to Demelza's apartment. She wasn't there, and the place, when he let himself in, was still a wreck. So, whistling, Jack set about setting things right. Vampire speed was very helpful in cleaning things up as well as tearing them down, and he soon had several bags of trash ready for pickup in the morning. He'd made a mental list of all the things he would have to replace: it was the least he could do.

And hey, he could always nick them. Not like he had to pay retail. He picked up a broom and started to sweep.

There was a knock at the doorframe and he looked up to see a dark skinned bloke with dreadlocks and a piratical getup that somehow suited him.

"Demelza here?"

"Nope."

"What happened to this place?"

"Burglars," Jack said. What, he owed some strange guy his life story?

"I'm Ocean. Don't I know you?"

"Don't think so. I'm Demelza's cousin, Jack."

"Her cousin." The guy looked relieved.

"Yep, as far as I know the path to her is clear," Jack said. "Not that just anyone's good enough for Mel."

"You know where she is?"

"Not a clue."

"Too bad. I was in the mood for company. You want to get a drink?"

"Sorry mate, I don't swing that way."

"No, I meant, just a drink," Ocean said, laughing. "I'm a social guy, is all."

"Yeah, actually, a drink would be good. There's a nice pub down the road."

Ocean picked up a broom. "Let's finish up here first."

"You really like her, huh," Jack said after a minute.

"Yes."

"Well, be nice or I'll--"

"I am not stupid enough to piss of her vampire relatives," Ocean said.

"So, you figured it out."

"Uh, yeah."

"And you still want to go for a drink."

"You aren't planning on eating me, are you?"

"Nah." Heck, Jack was considering giving animals a try. How bad could it be?

"Well, then, why on earth wouldn't I want a vampire for a friend?"

"Good question. Come on, that's good for now. Let's go."
