THREE

“What do you mean you're having an affair?!” her sister shouted at her through the receiver an hour or so later. “With who? What about Dan?”

Nicole sighed unpatiently. She was rapidly starting to regret leaving that message on her sister's answering machine...

“Adam Banroe. But it was just a kiss. It's not like I'm in love with him or anything. I'm still with Dan.”

“Yeah, that's cheating, Nicole!”

Stupid as it sounded, she hadn't thought of it like that. Cheating was a strong word. All the time she had been rolling around on the grass in the park with Adam Banroe, feeling his lips against hers, his hot, rough hands caressing her face, the feel of his hair as she ran her fingers through it passionately, she hadn't spared Dan a single thought. She didn't even regret kissing Adam. What did that say about the relationship she had with Dan?

“Hello? Nicole! I'm talking to you!” Tamara's voice on the other end of the phone made her snap out of her thoughts.

“Uh, yeah.” Nicole said.

“What are you going to do about this?”

“I... I don't know.” It was the truth. She didn't want to tell Dan because doing so would definitely mean they were over. But at the same time, she wanted to feel Adam press his lips against hers again – no matter how big headed that guy was.

“You're going to have to tell Dan, you know,” Tamara said seriously. “Sooner or later he's bound to find out. I can't believe you cheated on Dan with Adam Banroe! I thought you hated that guy. You know he only wants you so that he can show you off to his mates.”

Irritation flared up inside Nicole's chest. How dare her sister say such a thing!

“He does not! Adam's practically begging me to ditch Dan for him for ages now!”

“There's no need to throw a hissy fit, Nicole. Honestly, listen to yourself, you sound like a --”

“Shut up! What do you know, Tamara? You've never kissed anyone! You don't know what love is. You think you're so much better than everyone else. You should just know what everybody says behind your back.”

Nicole hung up the phone before Tamara could answer. She knew Tamara would get hurt by the things she had said, and deep down, she knew she didn't mean them, but she didn't care. Adam fancied her, Dan was probably in love with her, she was sure every guy in school had fantasized about her in one way or another, so what did she need to listen to Tamara for? She was a big girl, she could handle herself.

Something tells me that she can't, and that she's going to find out the hard way.

Yikes. Hope she doesn't regret burning that bridge, but I think she probably will.

Just keeps digging that hole deeper and deeper, doesn't she?
