Welcome to Sherwoodsecrets. We hope you enjoy your visit.

King Richard ‘The Lion heart’ is dead and England suffered greatly in the wake of the crusade. The throne sat vacant, and all of England waited with anticipation for the next King of England to rise. The lands were in turmoil and times were hard. Yet none suffered so greatly as the shire of Nottingham. Their saviour, ‘Robin Hood’ and his most loyal friends have long since died, which left the people of Nottinghamshire to fend for themselves against harsh and cruel Lords. The Sheriffs death was still talked about among the poor folk, the last thing that Robin Hood gave them, their freedom from persecution against the harsh man that ruled Nottingham.

Yet hope remained!

Deep in the heart of Sherwood Forest a secret hid, a secret that bought the people hope once again. Robin Hood may be dead, but his legacy lived on. It was rumored that there remained a few, outlawed and banished, that dwelled within the boughs and strove to keep the legend of Robin Hood alive. Biding their time, preparing for that final battle to free Nottinghamshire once and for all! Only time would tell if ‘Robin Hood’ and everything he stood for lived on in the new generation!

But now, two years on, times were changing. The scent of succession grew strong upon the wind. Rumors were abound that a legitimate heir to the throne had been found. Somewhere in the holy lands a son of the late King Richard dwelled unknown and unknowing of the fate that awaits him. Youth sheltered him from the harsh realities of the world, as a dedicated group of men put every effort into making the boy obscure. But the secret became public and excitement thrummed through the country. Excitement and anger! For there were still those that benefitted greatly from the throne lying empty! Those that had pledged allegiance to the throne of England and its rightful ruler fought bravely against those willing to sacrifice the boy. And those that fought to keep a King on the throne were also those that had fought to keep Nottingham safe. Their Quest was an important one, one that saw the rise of not only Nottingham, but the entire country, and so they abandoned the internal wars that forever waged within the cities and towns of England, leaving them once more open and vulnerable to the harsh justice of the rich and powerful. Towns became ravaged with greed, the poor suffered greatly, and even those nobles with gentle dispositions felt the need to flee for their own safety. However, two years have passed since and those that sought to place the boy upon the throne, to save England, now returned with no head to wear the crown. Was their quest all for naught? Did they sacrifice their home, friends and family on a fool’s errand? Or is the secret of who the Boy King is still at large?

The Courtyard

Beyond the large oaken doors of the castle lies the large courtyard. Descending the wide steps from the castle you will find yourself in the middle of a large, square area that’s paved with dark grey stone. Walls rise high all around it, giving their intimidating protection from the world beyond. In the very centre of this large expanse sits a sight that many fear. The gallows swings regularly with the victims of interminable crimes for the pleasure and enjoyment of those in power. At the far end of the courtyard lies the gatehouse. Two large towers supporting the iron portcullis that keeps unwanted persons out.

The Great Hall

This is the main room of the castle and therefore has to uphold the expected excellence that accompanies its name. For the great hall surely is great. The room is almost three times as long as it is wide and just as tall. A large fireplace dominates one end of the hall, providing light and wamth in the long winter months. Long tables litter the stone floor, the furniture crude yet majestic for the era. It is obvious that the owner of the castle is of wealth. Stone walls are decorated with tapestries, and one wall is host to many large, arched windows that look out towards the courtyard. A staircase made of wood leads up towards the sleeping quarters where people of noble blood reside.

Sleeping Quarters

Above the Great Hall lies the sleeping quarters of the rich and powerful. The long corridors are accessible by the large wooden staircase that leads off from the great hall. Here there are varying degrees of elegance depending on your status. The main corridor leads off in other directions that lead to other areas of the castle and more sleeping areas. Most of the rooms are sparsely decorated, cold stone walls covered with ornate tapestries. A large bed dominates the rooms, with dressers and wardrobes to house all their finery. The large oak doors rarely have locks upon them, only the really powerful guests assigned the more secure rooms.

The Chapel

Tucked away in the back of the castle is the chapel. A small area dedicated to the worship of God for those few individuals that take their faith seriously. The Chapel is extremely sparse, a small stone room with a plain stone alter at the front. One large window, sparsely decorated, provides light to the room. A few wooden benches line the walls, along with a spattering of candle holders. Heavy curtains partition off a small area for confessions and the like.

The Dungeons

Beneath the walls of the castle is a place no man ever wishes to see. The dungeons are a horror that haunts every man, woman and child. Dark, dank and filthy, no decent rodent would be seen dead down there, never mind a human being. However, the cells are more often than not occupied by those that have committed crimes punishable by imprisonment, torture or death. The corridors are sparsely lighted with flickering flame torches, adding a grey haze to the air. The cells are littered with filthy straw and very little more. The doors are of the sturdiest oak, with heavy iron locks. Those awaiting death are usually placed in an open cell with an iron gate keeping them in, allowing others to see what could happen should they not co-operate.
