Better Know A Person

Name: Ianto Trynt Jones.
Nick Names: Yan – which he dislikes.
Age: 25.
Sex: Male.
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual.
Occupation: Personal Secretary to the Prime Minister/ Informant to the Doctor.
Country/City/Place of Birth: Born in Cardiff, Wales.
Alliance: The Doctor.
Species: Human.
Original or Canon: Canon.

The Masks We Wear

Face Claim: Gareth David-Lloyd.
Hair Color: Dark Brown.
Eye Color: Blue.
Type Of Clothing: Ianto is typically found in a sharp, well made suit with a shirt and tie (colours of shirts and ties vary, but the suit is usually black).
What Looks Best: Ianto looks fantastic in a suit, or so he's been told. Many times.
What Looks Worst: He looks terrible in tracksuits, and he dislikes them anyway because he feels like a chav. He also dislikes jeans because he feels a little bit uncomfortable in them and as such only wears them if necessary.

Description:

Ianto Jones is a clean cut, always tidy young man with brown, short cropped hair that flicks out at the front, styled with small amounts of gel, and fairly rounded features. Frequently seen in a suit (prior to his current employment, it was due to a certain boss preferring them; nowadays it's more because his job dictates it necessary), it's rare to see him in a state of disarray and he gives off the impression of being calm, collected and very professional. He is fairly tall, standing at 5' 11”, and he usually either looks worried or amused, in which case he has a small sly grin on his face.

Ianto doesn't have particularly tanned skin, but he has fairly broad shoulders and works out regularly, so he has the beginnings of some decent muscles. His stride is quick and confident, back always straight, head always up and eyes looking around so that he's aware of his surroundings. He has several scars on his body: a burn mark on his chest from dragging Lisa out of the wreckage of Torchwood One (he was lucky to only get the one), a few nicks and cuts on his left arm that he'd kept picking at until he'd realised they had scarred, and one just below his right knee from falling out of a tree when he was seven.

Our Mind Set

Likes:
  • ABBA
  • James Bond
  • Films in general
  • Having a good time
  • Cleaning
  • Reading novels
  • Living in a city
  • Dogs
  • Fennel tea
Dislikes:
  • Feeling useless/being unappreciated
  • The countryside
  • Meat
  • Cats
  • Mochas
  • Night time
  • Overly crowded pubs/clubs
  • London
  • Torchwood
Strengths:
  • He is organised/efficient.
  • He has a fantastic memory (especially for numbers) and is fairly astute.
  • His knowledge of Torchwood remains unrivaled (except possibly by Jack).
  • He has reasonable skill with a computer/technical things.
  • Approaches things in a logical manner
  • He is well versed in the art of keeping secrets (when he needs to).
  • Great administration.
Weaknesses:
  • Loyalty issues – he betrayed Torchwood, so how can anyone trust him? He also finds it hard to trust other people, having become used to keeping secrets.
  • Weaponry/Self defence – he has a very basic knowledge of weaponry, and other than basic self defence necessary for his previous work, he isn't a good fighter.
  • OCD – everything has it's place, as far as Ianto is concerned, and he's a bit... well, anal about it all being neat. It's easy to wind him up; just makes sure his pen isn't at the right angle.
  • Jealousy – Ianto is prone to fits of jealousy, having had a fair amount ripped away in the past. As such, he finds it hard to keep relationships going.
  • Ex-lovers – Ianto is one of those people who just can't seem to let go of the past, and as such sometimes his ex-lovers can have a great influence on his life. He still pines after Lisa like little else, and he still has a sort-of crush on Jack, although at the same time he hates the man; he'd happily shoot the immortal if he was ordered to.
  • Drive to prove himself – Ianto needs to prove, both to others and to himself, that he's good for more than just making coffee and filing.
  • Brave – Ianto isn't particularly brave. He doesn't understand the rush other people get from danger and would much rather be left on the sidelines, where it's safe. He would prefer to do things that have a no risk factor, hence his assisting the Doctor. It seems like the winning side.
  • Temptation – Ianto has low tolerance for tempting situations, as proven by going to join the Doctor. Whatever it happens to be that has taken his fancy, he finds it hard to resist.
Fears:
  • Having to face the consequences of betraying Torchwood.
  • Having the Doctor abandon him like all the others.
  • Being relegated to a useless job.
  • Dying.
  • Big spiders.
Dreams:
  • To finally be given the respect he deserves/be recognised for his skills.
  • To find a way to bring Lisa back.
  • To take revenge on Torchwood.
  • To have a long term relationship.
  • To help the Doctor in his plans.
Guilty Pleasures:
  • He adores ABBA (except for Dancing Queen).
  • He like to indulge in badly written romance novels.
  • Labyrinth. He knows the script and the songs.
  • Fantasizing about Sean Connery (hey, everyone has their person!).
General Personality:

Ianto Jones is, by nature, a quiet person. He dislikes being constantly in the thick of attention or danger, and it's his ability to be almost invisible that makes him such a fantastic keeper of secrets, and also an observational wonder. He understands that drawing attention to oneself all the time is just begging for trouble, but don't think that means that he wants to hide away for his entire life – like any other person, Ianto yearns for someone to notice him and his abilities, and to like him for his quirks and his oddities... To like him for being him. He has yet to find someone who seems to care about him in such a way, except for Lisa, and it hurts to think that his life could pass by with such ambiguity. He wants to make an impact and be remembered. He hasn't really been the same since his father died.

Ianto spends too much of his time thinking, and he can get a little bit paranoid about decisions he has made. He always wonders what life would have been like if he had done this, said that, and it makes him feel very lonely and regretful. His ponderings often have a large impact on his current decisions. However, when he gets something into his head as being right, he tends to stick by that idea, come hell or high water. In that sense, he's very much loyal – but only to what he believes in. People have tried to take this passion and twist it for their own means, but few have succeeded as the Doctor has. It takes a lot to make Ianto realise that he's done something wrong, even if he has done it for a good reason (such as keeping Lisa alive).

Ianto has very definite superiority issues with other people, in the sense that he always feels they're looking down on him, making him feel inferior. He spent most of his childhood underachieving and people have come to expect little from him, which annoys him a lot. His drive to make people understand that he is good for something often backfires, though, and he ends up looking like a foolish child. He wants someone to be on level with him.

Ianto is very safety conscious. He doesn't understand the drive so many of the people around him feel to get themselves into danger, or how they can thrive on the adrenaline rush when it simply terrifies him. Some would call him a coward, but he isn't – he's done things that take a lot of courage. He simply dislikes anything that might get him killed. He also has trouble with temptation – he's never been very good at resisting impulses, and has always relied on his gut instincts to tell him what is the right thing to do (often with dubious or disastrous results). As such, when something calls to him, he finds it difficult to say no – notable cases include the time he was caught shoplifting, Jack and the Doctor's promise of power.

While he is, despite all this, a fairly nice and pleasant person, Ianto has something dark stirring in his soul. It has yet to find an outlet, other than bouts of depression, but it waits deep down for a time to unveil itself and cause chaos. It's nothing alien – it's just the dark side of human nature.

The Roots We Have Sown

Family
Mother: Lowri Jones [nee Sayer]; deceased.
Father: Alun Jones; retired/institutionalized, 62, Cardiff.
Siblings:
Other: The Doctor (current boss); Jack Harkness (former boss/ former lover); Lisa Hallet (girlfriend, deceased).

History:

Ianto Jones was born on the 19th August 1983, to Lowri and Alun Jones of Cardiff, Wales. Even from birth, he was a very quiet child – he rarely cried, he never threw a tantrum, and he was quite content to be left alone with a toy or to sit in his mother's arms while she went about working. Alun, as a master tailor and with his own store to run, didn't spend much time with Ianto when he was very young, instead churning out orders for high profile customers, but he would take a larger role in the boy's life when he was a little older and able to look after himself for ten minutes. His mother, a self-employed accountant, was able to work from home and so he was taught the importance of numbers and the need for organisation from a very young age.

He led a fairly normal childhood, although he was a bit of a loner. When he started school, he found it hard to make friends as he was always very neat (his father didn't stand for untidiness) and well mannered, whereas his classmates tended to be a bit rowdy. This isn't to say he didn't have any friends – he had one or two, but he felt uncomfortable around people his own age. He spent most of his afternoons and weekends watching his dad in his shop, helping him by learning to work the cash register and fetching things as and when they were needed.

He found he had a tendency to get into trouble when he went to play with the other children in his street – a particularly horrible memory to highlight this was when he was seven. He was dared to climb a tree at the end of the street, after being called a wimp, and when he'd gotten a fair way up it, his hands slipped and he fell out, managing to break his leg rather badly – the bone was sticking out just a little bit. A few months in a cast and he was as right as rain, but he never climbed trees again, and he has a scar to remind him of it. It was after he was released from hospital that his father started taking him to the Electro cinema, both as an attempt to cheer the boy up and to try and spend some quality time with him as Lowri had been scolding him for being all business. They returned to the cinema frequently, but both felt uncomfortable with the forced father-son bonding, and it didn't work all that well.

Only a few months after he turned eleven, disaster struck the Jones family – Lowri, on her way to pick Ianto up from his first day at secondary/high school was involved in a crash with a lorry and died on the way to hospital. While he hadn't spent as much time with his mother in recent years, he'd always been closer to her than he had his father, who only ever seemed interested in preparing Ianto to take over the family business of the store, and it was a huge blow to the lad. He spent the next few months utterly depressed, rarely going to school and avoiding his father when possible, and he ended up spending a lot of time in the region of Splott, simply because it was the last place his father would think of going. Ianto needn't have bothered – his father had been withdrawing into himself since his wife's death, and was never the same man again. It would be when Ianto returned to Cardiff, after Canary Wharf, that he found his father in a care home, senile and imagining that his wife was still at his side.

However, at this time he fell in with the wrong crowd, and his grades, already suffering from the depression, continued to spiral downwards. Ianto was more interested in avoiding responsibility at the time, and it was one evening when he was avoiding a family function that he was arrested for shoplifting at a corner shop. It wasn't the first time he'd done so, and it wouldn't be the last, but it did put him off such things. He ditched the friends he made and brought his grades back up to an acceptable level, although he never made more effort than was absolutely necessary. He finished school with average grades and years of “has potential; could do better” from his teachers, and immediately left his hometown to seek out work in London.

Ianto drifted from job to job, ranging from office work to Starbucks (which he wasn't keen on – he could make better coffee than them any day!), but it was in temporary work at a club near the West End that he met Lisa Hallet, soon to be girlfriend and love of his life. She came in one evening, out on the pull with her friends, but spent most of her time at the bar chatting up our young Welshman. Seeing her a few more nights while he worked, he agreed to go on a date and things escalated from there. He didn't hear a single word of her job until they were walking home to her flat one evening, completely drunk, and encountered a Weevil in the street. While not a field officer for Torchwood, Lisa and all other employees were trained to deal with basic threats such as this common brand of alien, and she quickly dispatched the monster. Ianto was so shocked at the death of what he assumed to be a person in costume made him sick, and Torchwood was left with two choices – dispose of the person who had seen the alien and the murder, or hire him. (Unlike its sister base, they didn't trust Retcon as a permanent solution).

Thus began Ianto's work as a junior researcher. He proved quite adept at the task, his organisational skills and attention to detail (all gleaned from his parents), and he was excellent at making coffee, which pleased the people in his department (and a couple of others), so he made friends quicker here than he ever had anywhere else, as if he'd finally found somewhere that he fitted in. His joy was short lived, however. Two years after he had joined Torchwood and forgiven Lisa, he was preparing to propose to the young woman.

And then everything went to hell.

Torchwood One burned to the ground, and Ianto all but lost everything that was important to him – his friends, his work, and Lisa. While she did survive, only half human and dragged from the remains of Torchwood whilst she was still cooling from the half-conversion, she slept so often and was in so much pain that sometimes Ianto would consider just killing her, and following her afterwards to put them both out of their misery. However, under her instruction he persevered and built a device to sustain her from scraps of the cyber conversion units he managed to steal under pretence of being a U.N.I.T. employee helping with the cleanup. Unfortunately, it required more power than he could ever afford to pay for, and he had to think quickly. It was only while stealing some further parts to help make the device function a bit better that he came across his solution – two Torchwood Three employees digging through the rubble, in order to remove anything dangerous. Ianto made up his mind – he would have to move to Cardiff and join the smaller divison. Renting a van and loading Lisa up in the middle of the night, he returned to find his childhood home occupied, his father institutionalized and that he had nowhere to go. His first priority, however, remained Lisa, and he immediately started scouting the area for signs of Torchwood, for a way in.

He stumbled across Jack one night a week after returning to Wales quite by accident, as the other man being attacked by a Weevil. Quick to jump in and help, together they stopped the Weevil and he introduced himself. Despite being blown off, he followed Jack back to his base and Ianto started planning, preparing to confront the man the next day. When Jack finally left his base the next morning, he was confronted by a determined Ianto and he blew the young man off. Enraged, Ianto got desperate and urgently tried to find a reason to prove himself to Jack, which was thankfully provided by stumbling across a pterodactyl in the warehouse that he was keeping Lisa in for the time being. (To this day, Ianto assumes the Rift opened, attracted by the energy of the half-converted Cyberwoman). He tracked Jack down once again and the rest, as they say, is history.

Now safely in the employ of Torchwood Three, he stole Lisa to the basement when the team were out hunting down aliens, and he spent the next few months keeping the woman alive and keeping the Hub clean, organising their archives and generally doing menial labour. His colleauges never seemed too interested in talking to him – sure, Kara tried to be friendly with him when he was around, and Toshiko would talk to him occasionally, but it would take the escape and death of his girlfriend to get anyone to really notice him. With the last person in his life to make him happy now gone, Ianto fell into a spiralling circle of despair, shrugging off any attempts to help him and keeping to himself, moping. He immersed himself in Torchwood, trying to find an outlet for his grief which eventually manifested in the brief relationship (if you could call it that) with Jack; he admired the man, but Ianto didn't love him, and he knew Jack didn't love him back. It wasn't hard to tell, what with him making eyes at Gwen all the time. Eventually he resigned himself to fading away into nothing, just as he had before, and he hated himself for it, occasionally considering joining Lisa on the other side, despite knowing she wouldn't be there waiting for him.

It wasn't until the elections and the arrival of the Master that Ianto found his way out, his shining light, his last hope for having some kind of a life instead of wallowing in the Archives of the Hub, forgotten and alone. The Doctor approached him, somehow sensed that Ianto needed to do something more with himself, needed something to hold on to, and offered Ianto something he craved – attention, the power to decide his own future, to help the Doctor as he healed the world in his own special way. Ianto was too tempted by the offer to resist, and left Torchwood to help the Doctor, be his informant on how Torchwood operated, as well as being his personal secretary. While not exactly happy, he has something to hope for now – a better life. He feels a bit of regret for leaving Torchwood, occasionally – mostly for Kara and Toshiko – but it usually eases off pretty quickly. He remains loyal to the Doctor, and only hopes that he will reward him when the time comes (which he hopes will be a way to bring Lisa back).

Gavin really must be losing his touch, if Apple was commenting on it. It was just too early in the morning for this, for dealing with her when he was in such a state – yeah, that would be a good excuse, wouldn't it? He didn't notice her near miss at laughing at him and felt himself falling into a little bit of a foul mood. ”Shut up,” he mumbled halfheartedly as he got up, sending her a scowl that he knew was utterly feeble and wouldn't do anything but amuse her further. Gavin turned after he got up and looked at Apple, having not noticed her messing herself up, and was thoroughly amused by the sight.

”You look like you've been dragged through a hedge backwards,” he commented, the corners of his mouth twitching with laughter as a smile tried to fight its way onto his face. She did look a right state, which was just completely at odds with Gavin's normal view of the woman. Sure, he'd seen her at her worst in the mornings before – that was what happened when you lived with someone – but the thought that the fairer gender went to so much trouble just to make themselves look “presentable” for other people never failed to amuse him. Of course, he secretly liked Apple any way he could get her, but she wasn't to know that.

Of course, the smile was wiped from his face as the sun pierced his eyes and went directly into his brain, determined to kill him with the pain, he was sure. Maybe they still had some of that pain relieving remedy they stole from the apothecary last week, but he was sure they'd used it for something else... Maybe some water would be enough to tide him over for now. He stumbled a little, but otherwise kept up pace with the much steadier Regina (though, he really didn't notice).

Gina stopped, and Gavin stopped beside her. Why stop, or was talking while walking just too much for her at the moment? He couldn't really blame her for that, actually – it had taken him enough effort to do the same. He shrugged, he really couldn't remember her turning up, but then he didn't really remember a whole lot past announcing that he was off to the pub in the first place. ”Jus' wondering, thought maybe you'd seen a fella there and wanted to make a pass at him,” he replied, small smirk making its way onto his face in an attempt to tease her, but actually there to try and cover up how he felt. Well, hopefully the jealousy was kept out of his voice. And she had been eyeing up that one barman the last time they'd gone there... He'd thought he'd dealt with that, though.
