"Now, what did mama tell you before we left? Who is today about?" Calena was hunkered down in front of her daughter with the three year old standing standing between her bent knees. A sweet, happy smile brightened the three year old's face and added a twinkle to her hazel eyes. "Auntie Gwacie!" A sudden bout of exuberant clapping and giggling had Calena laughing in time with her daughter.

And in spite of how sunny Emma's current attitude was, Calena knew - oh did she know! - just how quickly that attitude could turn sour. "Aunt Grace and the baby, yes. Are you going to help pick out clothes for her?"

"Toys!"

"... Well they baby will need those, too. And you're an expert at picking those out, aren't you?" Whether Emma completely understood her mother, or just the jist of her words, didn't matter. She was excited and happy - and Calena half wondered if it was due to getting to see and spend time with her "Aunt Grace" or being able to go shopping. Her daughter was only three and there wasn't a doubt in Calena's mind she the little girl fully understood - and fully appreciated - the joys of spending her mother's money.

And that was a terribly frightening thought.

So there they were, standing outside one of the few stores in Shady Grove that would've sold infant's clothes. Calena would've much preferred to just give Jane a call and hand Emma over to her before kidnapping Grace and making the drive into San Francisco for some sublime, chic shopping. If it was up to her they'd go even further and peruse the racks on Rodeo Drive, but she had a sneaking suspicion that James would've appreciate that - not at there was much the man could do while he was however many thousands of miles away.... maybe next weekend...

While she was day dreaming and plotting, Emma was growing bored. Lucky for her the storefront had barrels of miniature umbrella's on sale... and it goes without saying that Emma didn't wait a minute before pouncing on that discovery. The minute she locked eyes on a bright pink plastic umbrella her little soul was sold. "Mama! Mama, mama! Loooookit! Pwetty toys!" The umbrella was just beyond her reach - her reach which was restrained by one of these safety harness that lopped around her middle and clipped and tied and... alright, alright! It was practically a leash that kept Emma just an arm's length away from her new beloved "toy".

"That's not a toy, Emma, and what did I say? We have to behave today. Maybe another day."

The pout that ensued broke Calena's heart, but was a prime example of how quickly Emma's moods could swing. From sunny to cloudy in .02 seconds. Wonderful. Well... at least Grace could get a taste of how utterly delightful every child's mood swings could be. It was the least Calena could do for her friend. Grace certainly deserved to know what she was getting herself into, and what better a way to gain that understanding than through a girl's do out shopping venture?

And just where was she anyway?

Grace was more than a little excited for her shopping date today with Calena and Emma. Not only was she going to get some much needed retail therapy in conjunction with spending time with one of her favorite coworkers (and said coworker's absolutely ADORABLE little girl), but they were going baby shopping! She felt her smile widen as she walked down the street, feeling very much aware of the slight baby bump that was just beginning to visibly show.

She needed this. She needed this a lot. Things had been so stressful lately--what with Gerry's revelation and breakdown and near alcohol-poisoning, the rumors circulating around school about Emi, settling into life as the unexpected mother of a teenage girl and being separated from her fiance--yes, she definitely needed this. Now if only James would come home!

She felt bad hoping that his play would end; she knew that it meant everything in the world to him to be directing an off-Broadway show. But still... they were engaged, they were going to have a baby, and not only did she miss him, she could tell by the sound of his voice over the phone at the end of the day that there was a big part of him that wished he was back in Shady Grove. She briefly fiddled with a daydream of taking her bags home from this shopping trip and showing off all her buys to him, before dispelling it--there were Cal and Emma!

"Hey!" she greeted them, coming to a stop, just slightly winded--she'd been rushing to get there from her car, and because of parking restrictions on this street she'd had to park a couple blocks away. Who knew that pregnancy winded you this much? "Sorry I'm late, loves. Annie knocked over a vase right before I was supposed to leave." Much as Gracie loved her fluffy white kitten, she really was an awful lot of trouble. "How are you?" she asked, leaning in to kiss Calena's cheek in greeting before crouching down to smile at Emma. "Hey there, sweetpea. Why so glum?"

Grace's voice was like... a beacon in the night. Calena's saving grace - no pun intended, and even though Emma's mood had soured with her mother, there was always hope that Aunt Gracie could turn her frown upside down.

Smiling, relieved that her friend had finally arrived, Calena gave her a quick one-armed squeeze and a peck on her cheek. "Hi to you too, Lady. Oh we're both doing just swell, yourself? And don't worry about it, we were early. Weren't we Emma?" No response. Even at three, Emma Ashby was smart enough to know when her mother meant business... but her Auntie Grace on the other hand... there was serious spoiling potential. Instead of greeting her pseudo-relative with a big girl smile and a big girl hug and a big girl hello, the young Ashby jutted her lower lip out and batted her big brown eyes at Grace, sniffling just a bit as she pointed at the pink umbrella.

What a ham!, Calena thought to herself. She so gets that from her father! "Uh-oh. Here's your first lesson of the day in parenting, Aunt Gracie. That facial expression of hers? It's also known as pouting - from the Latin "Orio Voris". Its goal is to weaken the resolve of the presiding adult and to earn the wearer great treats, excellent gifts and other wondrous spoils."

She spoke in a theatrical whisper, fighting back a broad grin. She used to be a sucker for those very expressions, and boy did she learn quickly! Her credit card was never the same after Emma was born, that much was certain. Curling her hands over her hips, Calena rolled her eyes at the utter... diva-ness of her daughter - the fact that she was only three and already a prime dona only adding an additional level of humor to the situation. Grace was so going to be another casualty to the infamous Emma pout! "Don't falter... Stay strong... their kind can smell fear. And sense where you keep your cash."

Shooting her mother a horrible frown, as if to say, "Hey! Hush it! You're going to jinx me, ma!" Emma quickly returned her gaze to her aunt's, throwing on arm behind her to point at the pretty pink umbrella. "Toys Auntie Gwacie! Mine?"

Grace couldn't help but grin at Calena--and then Emma. What a pair. She did love the Ashbys, more than was totally reasonable; then again, that could be said about a lot of the people that Grace adopted into her makeshift family here at Shady Grove, and Calena came in for more than her fair share of that affection, as Grace's mentally appointed big-sister-figure. "Swell indeed," she said, her eyes bright with suppressed laughter.

She did her best to look very seriously at Emma as she pouted and indicated the umbrella, though; kids always responded better to being taken seriously, or at least so Gracie had discovered during her various forays into childcare. As she crouched in front of Emma, she looked up at Calena and responded to her lesson with a wink and a suppressed grin. Oh yes, she was very, very well aware of the purpose of pouting... James employed it often when he was home, but then again he and Emma always got along well. Naturally theatrical, the pair of them. Grace didn't know how she'd be able to resist the combined pouting power of Baby Thompson and Baby's daddy.

"Toys?" Grace asked innocently. "Toys, Emmabear? That's not a toy! It's an umbrella. I have one too--so does your mommy. They're not very fun, are they?" she asked Calena, straightening with a little grin playing around her lips. Then she made a face, looking back at Emma. "Nasty grown-up things... I'm not sure you're big enough for one. And besides... like I said, they're not very fun. Are you suuuure you want one, Emmabear?" she asked.

Grace was a natural. Then again, maybe mothering was right up there with all the other home and hearth talents she possessed. Of course, it probably helped that this wasn't the first time "Auntie Gwacie" had seen Emma's sour disposition. Perhaps in spite of what could quickly become a less than favorable situation, Calena had to fight back laugh after laugh, her teeth biting down on her sensitive inner cheek to keep from smiling. With Emma, if she was in a bad mood everyone had best be in a bad mood, else her mood would only worsen.

And Calena didn't want that, no siree. She wanted to shop!

And evidently, so did Emma. Staring up at her adoptive aunt, her big brown eyes wide as she took in Grace's words... Calena almost thought she'd burst into tears. Then she shot a curious look over her shoulder, her eyes squinting,,, lips pursing... and may she be struck down if the little Ashby tot didn't strike a pose suspiciously similar to the one Calena used when she was aggravated by something. To Emma, if something was pink then it just had to be fun... but if Auntie Gwacie said so..."

"Tch!" Wrinkling her nose at the umbrella stand, Emma jerked on her harness, shifting her attention from the non-fun, non-toy umbrella to all the goodies that sat beyond the store's doors. "Toys inside, Auntie Gwacie?" Five little fingers wriggled as if trying to stretch her limbs to open the door and get the toys herself!

"Demanding, aren't you wiffet. Behave yourself, Emma, or you won't get a treat at all." And Calena's words were iron clad - she only hoped Grace would understand. As much as she enjoyed spoiling her daughter, or even better, other people spoiling her daughter so she could give her wallet a rest, giving gifts and treats to a naughty child would only reinforce bad behavior.

Or... that was what the parenting book had said. Not that that stupid thing had ever been right on the money, either. Paying no mind to her daughter's will-full eagerness, Calena opened the door for the three of them, lowering her voice a notch in case the impish tot decided to grow elephant ears. "Disaster averted, Agent deWitt. All of Shady Grove owes you their gratitude. Still...I wonder what you would have done if she had still wanted it?" The humor she had squashed earlier could not be restrained any longer and her laughter earned her a glower from Emma. "What? I'm not allowed to have fun. Wow... tough crowd, tough crowd..."

Faced with racks and aisles and shelves all full of clothes and accessories, Calena felt her inner shopaholic tendencies kicking in. "Now. I forbid you to play it safe. Don't buy the neutral tones and yellows and greens and "safe" patterns just because you don't know the gender yet. If it's a boy you can take the pink back, if it's a girl... well, maybe she'll have your eyes and it'll go either way. Besides, it's a girl. I know these things."

To be honest, Grace wasn't that nervous about becoming a parent; she'd been playing the role of mother hen almost as long as she could remember, first with her (much younger) brother Hank and then with various friends, coworkers, and now students--even to the point of practically adopting one of them. Well, all right--she was still nervous. Any expectant mother who wasn't at least a little nervous, no matter how much experience they had with kids, was either a liar or a total idiot, in Gracie's opinion.

But still, she wasn't terribly surprised when her ploy worked on Emma; she just glanced up at Calena and winked surreptitiously. "Mhm... there are toys inside," she confirmed, though she heard her friend's warning loud and clear; no spoiling Emma, at least not unless she got her momma's say-so. Grace could respect that, as difficult as it was sometimes for her to resist those big eyes Emma was capable of unleashing. Add a tear to those and the child could stop wars, she was convinced.

"Uh-oh, Mommy's made her rule," Grace said, suppressing a grin as she shifted her pale blue gaze from Calena back to Emma. She dropped her voice to a conspiratorial stage-whisper. "Better be good or I won't be allowed to buy you a new plush!"

She had to stifled a chuckle by biting her lip, though, as Calena murmured to her while they headed inside. She winked back at her pretty friend, then gave a little huff of laughter. "Oh, god, I have no idea," she whispered back. "I was playing it totally off-the-cuff. Probably told her they were outside because no one wanted to carry silly old umbrellas anymore, and the store wanted to get rid of them?" she grimaced comically, the expression almost more of a grin, and spread her hands. She laughed too when Emma glared at them, before giving the little girl as innocent and friendly a smile as she could. Good lord, the little girl was three going on thirty.

The home economics teacher gave a most un-adult giggle as Calena set forth the terms of their little shopping spree. "Oh, come on... yellow and green are great colors!" Inwardly, though, she couldn't help but be a little pleased that Calena felt so sure it was a girl--Gracie was secretly hoping that herself. Or maybe it was that she felt it. Was there really any difference? "I was going to get some basics in purple, because it'll go with both blue and pink," she said. "Unisex without being asexual!"

Eep... perhaps she'd said that a little too loud. An older woman passing them gave her and Calena a Look--yes, capital L--with a raised eyebrow before passing on. "Oh, come on," Grace whispered when the woman was out of earshot. "It's not like I was talking about the kama sutra. You'd think with all this baby stuff around fertility wouldn't be a taboo topic."
