No heavily made-up stars wearing fancy gowns. No kilometric "thank you" speeches. No traditional production numbers. Just a fast-paced awards presentation full of kiddie vibe and a bucketful of slime.

From the show’s concept of producing a circus-centric show to the very dynamic hosting style of Noel dela Rosa and Alexa Ortega to the imaginative production spots, Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards 2006 Preview Party, held recently at the Aliw Theater in Pasay City, was undeniably an affair for, and by the young.

"It is a celebration of the kids’ power to vote for their favorites," says Nickelodeon Asia’s marketing and communications manager Ana Maria Pulido. "And, with the warm reception that the show got from the audience, I’m pretty sure that we have done our part pretty well."

Before the actual show started, the kids enthusiastically took part in an array of Nickelodeon games. Booths were also set up at the lobby of the show’s venue to further create that kiddie feel.

When the show began with a Bahay Kubo production number, the over 2,000 members of the audience cheered incessantly in appreciation of the very creative spot. The said segment alone featured over 50 performers, singers, dancers, acrobats, jugglers, magicians and a mime artist.

"It is the circus theme dashed with a distinct Filipino flavor," adds Pulido.

For about two hours, Nickelodeon Channel fans were thrilled no end as they had the chance to see snippets of this year’s Kid’s Choice Awards in Los Angeles in between special circus acts cum musical spot. Loud cheers were heard at the venue as the names of the winners in the various categories were unraveled.

Spongebob Squarepants and Patrick Star also graced the event.

The highlight of the show was still the announcement of the winner of the Pinoy Wannabee Award, a prestigious Nickelodeon commendation given to the celebrity whom kids consider their role model.

This year, boxing champ Manny Pacquiao, Pinoy Big Brother housemate Sam Milby, Bianca Gonzales, Iza Calzado and Little Big Star winner Sam Concepcion were nominated for the said award.

Garnering about 40 percent of the total almost 20,000 votes casted, Sam Concepcion, 13, was named the Third Pinoy Wannabee Awardee after Sarah Geronimo (2004) and Kitchie Nadal (2005).

Sam, who earlier performed an impressive hip-hop number, was overwhelmed with the recognition that he uttered only the words, "I am so thankful."

The crowd cheered when Sam’s name was called, but went wild when the young singing heartthrob was slimed, a Nickelodeon tradition.

"I feel humbled and inspired," he says when asked how he feels that he was named the first male Pinoy Wannabee awardee. "To be regarded as role model to kids is indeed a feat."

He adds that along with the recognition is a little pressure on his part. However, he was quick to say that he takes the said responsibility very positively. "Since I joined showbiz, I always try to be a good example to other kids."

Sam, who plays Boy Bawang in ABS-CBN’s upcoming fantaserye Super Inggo, also shares that he too has a lot of role models in showbiz like Christian Bautista, a graduate of Landscape Architecture from the University of the Philippines, and Bettina Carlos, who balances well her career with schoolwork from the Ateneo, where she is a sophomore taking up BS Communications Technology and Management.

"Like Kuya Christian and Ate Bettina, I also value education, and I hope, in my own little way, I could help other kids see how important education is," enthuses Sam, who is now in second year high school.

At 13, Sam is grateful for all the good things that have been coming his way recently. Aside from the Pinoy Wannabee Award, Sam also got international awards from Korea and the US for his stint in a trade fair and his short film Miko, respectively. He generously shares all his acclaim with "all the Samsters worldwide, members of the press, my manager David Cosico and the entire STAGES team, my voice coach Lani Ligot, my choreographer Chinnie Nepomuceno, my dentist Dr. Joyce Reyes, ABS-CBN and Studio 23 kapamilya, and, of course, my family."
