Bren smiled at him, but then suddenly yawned as he continued to lightly rub his face. Joshua felt his face warming with… affection. He hadn’t even noticed he had fallen asleep; he slept so quietly beside him this entire time.
When he gave him a light nod, he lifted his gaze towards the teacher who was currently being talked to by two male students. If they were going to leave, they had a good chance to go now.
Joshua turned back to Bren, who was staring up at him looking overly happy. He chuckled softly at his expression and began picking himself up. When he was standing, he didn’t hesitate to turn back to Bren and hold out his hand…
When Bren’s small hand reached out to him he gripped him tightly and helped lift him up. Once he was standing he took a good look around. There was no way they’d be able to walk out of here without being caught and there was absolutely nothing they could hide behind either.
He let out a sigh when he realized he had to lie to the coach in order for them to leave. The two students talking to the coach had disband and he slowly began leading Bren towards him.
“Coach Stieger,” he called to him and the older man turned towards them, “Bren’s not feeling well, do you mind if we go inside to warm up?”
It wasn’t an extreme lie… but it made him uncomfortable anyways. The P.E teacher stared between them, mostly at Bren though. “All right, if he doesn’t feel any better take him to the nurses office.”
Joshua gave a light nod and then began leaving. Some of the other students who over heard their conversation watched them as they left. A few in the crowd looked disappointed by their departure.
He on the other had was… very happy to be leaving.

And maybe that was why he was feeling so light-headed and not his usual overly flustered self when Joshua reached out to help him get up.
Unconsciously, without even thinking, Bren reached out and grasped his outstretched hand. It wasn’t until he was being pulled up to his feet that he became conscious of the fact that the gesture was a tad bit…odd. No other guy had ever offered to help him off the ground before.
When Joshua began to walk over toward Coach Stieger, Bren followed him without a second thought. He took the time to look around, noticing that everyone was up now and it looked as though Dustin and Lex were going to play some more ball.
“Coach Stieger,” Joshua called out. “Bren’s not feeling well. Do you mind if we go inside to warm up?”
Stieger’s attention immediately went to him and it caused Bren to stiffen a bit, jarring fully awake.
“All right, if he doesn’t feel any better take him to the nurse’s office.”
As he and Joshua started to head back toward the building, Bren began to wonder what the coach thought of Joshua. He probably already had a bad impression of him…simply because he was hanging out with him, and seemed to enjoy his company. T-That didn’t mean that Joshua was going to skip too, he immediately thought and he couldn’t help but feel a bit irritated.
“Hey, Joshua…,” Bren called to him and glanced over to look up at him. He gave him a smile when he got his attention. “Thanks.”

"Hey, Joshua…,” Bren’s soft voice called out to him and he slowly turned his head towards him. “Thanks.”
The chocolate brown haired boy smiled kindly at him, his eyes and expression full of gratitude. He immediately felt himself swell with pride. His eyes unconsciously lowered towards his lips before he glanced back ahead.
“You’re welcome,” he returned his voice deep with the inner satisfaction he felt.
It took them no time at all to arrive at the back doors and Joshua knew they weren’t really going inside to warm up. That their goal right now was to head home. He turned and saw that their gym teacher was ironically busy dictating the two boys who decided to play ball.
They couldn’t just walk through the back doors and exit out the front. He knew the lobby was right there and that Mrs. Willis would no doubt ask where they were going and he didn’t really feel like lying again. So instead of going inside he began leading Bren around the school.

Bren’s smile faltered a tad as the deep sound of his voice effected him. Thankfully, Joshua had already turned his gaze away to glance ahead as they continued to make their way toward the building. He didn’t let his effect bother him, however, and he determinedly pushed it away so he could remain fine and normal and how he should be.
As soon as they made it to the building, Joshua paused. Bren’s attention went back to him, and then unconsciously followed his gaze back toward the coach. And then they started walking, but not inside; instead Joshua began to lead him around the side of the building and within a matter of seconds they were out of sight.
Bren couldn’t help but glance toward Joshua, and he couldn’t believe what they were doing right now. His heart started to pound… w-were they skipping? As much as he had just been defending Joshua, he couldn’t stop himself from being happy as he realized that they were. That they were doing the one thing he had been wanting to do all day today—leave.
“Where…,” Bren began, his face hot. “Where are we going to go?”

"Where…,” his voice trailed off beside him and it caused his pace to slow until he stopped to give him his full attention. “Where are we going to go?”
Joshua frowned in thought as he mulled over all the places he knew on the island. Home, the school, the graveyard and the park. He wasn’t sure if his parents were home or not and he didn’t want to drag Bren all over the place when he was cold.
The graveyard was obviously not an option... and the park was far to close to the school.
“I’m… I’m actually not sure.” He admitted honestly, “I don’t know the island enough…” he tried to come across lighthearted like it didn’t bother him. But the truth was that he was bothered. He didn’t like the feeling of being in the dark in a new place.
He wanted to be more prepared than that… and now he wished he would have started exploring the island when he first arrived. Rather than being at home.
