"New years in twenty, Milli!" Breezing past his younger sister with a beer in his hand, Eddie Gale strategically placed himself near a single woman. He was hoping to get a new year's kiss, Milli knew, and was already counting down in anticipation. She could hear him, his excited voice rising above the sea of the chorus.

    "Twelve... eleven... ten..."

Milli didn't join in. She looked down her own glass, filled with a fruity orange punch (no alcohol for her, her brother had said). She didn't even want to be here at this new year's eve party. She wanted to be sleeping. But... she sighed. Eddie never wanted to go anywhere alone. And since their younger sister wasn't even eighteen yet, Milli was the one who got dragged around everywhere.

    "Seven... six... five..."

Everyone was so loud her. Milli rubbed her forehead, the pounding in her head increasing with every shouted word. New year's... what so great about it anyway? The upcoming year would be the same as this one. She knew she sounded cynical (so unlike herself), but... she was just tired. She didn't have patience for this.

    "Three..."

There was a flash of black hair.

    "Two..."

Someone jostled her, knocking her drink out of her hand.

    "One..."

Someone grabbed her arms, pulling her close to them.

    "Happy new years!"

She felt someone's lips press against hers, knocking the breath out her.

Cheers went around the crowd, girls excited, guys whooping. Milli closed her eyes, horrified, as the person who grabbed her let go. She opened them again, only seeing a flash of black hair before whoever it was had gone, leaving her standing there like a statue. She couldn't even process what had just happened. Someone had... her first... Dimly, she remembered her split drink and knelt down, trying find her cup. It was more out of a desire to do something to take her mind off of what had just happened than anything.

She knew new years meant that new year's kiss... But she had never imagined that someone might... to her of all people... Spotting her cup, Milli grabbed for it, then straightened up. Even more than that... who had kissed her? A flash of black hair, the same flash as before, drew her attention. Milli spun on her heel and pushed through the crowd, intent on finding that flash, finding who had the nerve to actually... she remembered the sensation and blushed.

Her brother crossed her tracks, forcing her to stop. "Milli, you look like someone split drinks on your favorite hat", he laughed. She self consciously reached up to touch the tan hat on her head. "What's wrong?"

She didn't know if it was okay to tell Eddie or not. He was her brother... And it was his fault she was here anyway. "Someone kissed me..." she said in a low whisper. "For the new year's kiss thing." She watched Eddie's expression go from amusement, to bewilderment, to anger. Her brother was super protective of his little sisters.

"Which bastard did it?! I'll kill him!" he said harshly, swinging his arms around to punctuate his sentence. "Eddie! Stop it!" Milli hissed, putting her arms up to stop him. He was acting like an idiot. It took a few minutes for Milli to calm Eddie down. She sent him back to the kitchen to get her a drink, although he didn't want to leave his baby sister alone again.

Leaning against a wall, Milli slumped forward and brought her hand up to her face. She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. Through the curtain of her hair, she spotted a flash of black hair. Was it-? She straightened up, scanning the room until she caught his eye-

He winked at her, the guy who had kissed her as the clock struck midnight. His face was a familiar one. Milli didn't know if she should be amused, or horrified. He smiled widely and blew her a kiss before disappearing into the crowd.

Eddie found her like that, frozen and staring in shock at an empty spot in the room. "Milli, you alright/" he asked, handing her a drink. She took it methodically and finished it in one long gulp. "Yeah" she managed to say weakly. Eddie shrugged and moved off, one eye fixed on his sister.

Milli stared at the back of her hand, then wiped her mouth again. A feeble giggle escaped her lips. Who would have thought she'd end up kissing her arch nemesis at the start of the new year? What her brother say if she told him that Gray Maddox... She giggled again.

"Happy new years to me" she said out loud.
