Ally Safe Zone Programs are popular initiatives present at many colleges and universities that focus on creating a safe place for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students, faculty, and staff. Program participants often identify
themselves by displaying stickers and or signs and often go through ally training.

Evans (2002) studied the impact of a LGBT Ally Safe Zone Program on campus
climate at a large public state university in the upper Midwest; very little research
has been done on the impact of these types of programs at other types of
institutions (public vs. private, large vs. small, urban vs. rural, etc.).

Describe and discuss Ally Safe Zone Programs that have been implemented at a
variety of colleges and universities in the United States. Analyze the various
challenges and opportunities that may be associated with creating and
implementing Ally Safe Zone Programs at ELCA Lutheran colleges.
