Title: Anime/Manga Thread
MrMarill - January 7, 2012 01:00 AM (GMT)
Now, this may seem a bit weird for ME to be starting this thread, but I sat down and watched the nine volumes of the Death Note anime over the last week (I'd already read the manga) with my friends, and it was really fun. I've decided that every so often I'll buy a new box set of anime, or get something online, to watch with my friends. So, this isn't a "SUGGEST ANIME YEAH" thread, but you can talk about your experiences with each of them here. As you finish an anime, you could say if you recommend it or not, or we can just discuss animes people have watched in general. And stuff.
So, discuss!
Like I mentioned, I just watched Death Note after reading the manga. It was, of course, very, very good. The character development was absolutely perfect, and I felt the anime did a lot better job of the first half of the series, especially with Light's growing insanity. The animation was superb, and I loved the red/blue theme going on with Light and L. The second half actually left out a huge chunk of stuff from the manga, which wasn't necessary but it was still fairly important. Also, some of the jumps in logic towards the end weren't explained very well, so I can see people getting confused over it. Anyway, I'd definitely recommend it if you're looking for a srs bsns anime.

So since this is anime/manga, are we not allowed to bring up Saiyan and his hentai? I feel that falls under the same category.

I just finished the second season of Squid Girl. It's been airing weekly for about the past twelve weeks. I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as the first season, sadly. It just wasn't particularly entertaining. I'd recommend the first season, but not the second, unless you REALLY liked the first. It seems like the kind of show that could get a third season. Not sure if I'd watch it if it did.
MrMarill - January 7, 2012 02:20 AM (GMT)
Imma watch Eureka Seven next. What is Squid Girl, out of interest? Apart from sounding like a really bad tentacle porno.
LightningBolt - January 7, 2012 02:45 AM (GMT)
It's a comedy about a squid girl who comes from the ocean and tries to take over the world. It's pretty silly.

How did we not have this thread already?
Life Against Death - January 7, 2012 06:19 AM (GMT)
The ending to Death Note annoyed me only because...
SPOILER
...after L died, I was really hoping Light would win. Also, how he got caught was complete bullshit.
END SPOILER
MrMarill - January 7, 2012 11:47 AM (GMT)
^@Outlaw. Srsly, how'd it take us so long?
Also any anime called "Squid Girl" is bound to be silly xP
SPOILER
I thought the manga handled it a bit better in that it took two volumes of building up to the ending and another volume of just explaining the plans and all the plotholes, while they do the whole thing in like four to five episodes in the anime. I assume they ran out of time or something.
I personally think the way L died was bullshit. I also think that L was actually better than Light, just Light had too much element of surprise almost.
I actually supported L/N/M for most of it, so that was okay. xP
END SPOILER
LightningBolt - January 7, 2012 09:22 PM (GMT)
I just started Bakemonogatari, because I've been interested in watching it and a sequel, Nisemonogatari, is going to start airing in Japan tomorrow and Crunchyroll picked up the show to simulcast.
Here's Crunchyroll's winter lineup if anybody's interested:
http://www.crunchyroll.com/lineupI'll be watching Another, because P.A. Works is doing it. They also did Angel Beats! and Hanasaku Iroha, which are both great. I'll be watching Nisemonogatari after I finish Bakemonogatari. I'll be watching Natsume's Book of Friends' 4th season after I watch the third season. And, I may watch Moretsu Pirates if it gets decent feedback.
SaiyanShredder - January 7, 2012 09:56 PM (GMT)
I got about halfway through Lucky Star and lost interest... I guess I prefer anime/manga like Azumanga Daioh and Yotsuba&! to Lucky Star...
Also I really should watch more Gun X Sword...

SPOILERI loved L. He was the perfect good guy. After he died, I no longer wanted the good guys to win...especially since I didn't really like Near or Mello.
END SPOILER
What's the point of saying spoiler in the spoiler?
Anyways, I just recently finished watching the anime
ChäoS;HEAd. It was a pretty good anime though it suffered from a bit of an identity crisis. It wasn't sure if it wanted to be a psychological horror/murder mystery or if it wanted to be a fantasy harem. Still a good watch, and it's only 12 episodes, so I'd definitely recommend it.
MrMarill - January 8, 2012 01:04 AM (GMT)
Because IE users don't get the spoiler so people with IE will end up spoiling the series for themselves =P
SPOILER
L was fantastic, I supported him from the start. There was also the fact that I supported the police in general because Light was, well, the bad guy. I also liked Near, which helps. It's still saddening L died at that point.
END SPOILER
Also, I felt the manga did the ending a lot better. But then again, books always have more time to make everything better.
LightningBolt - January 12, 2012 09:56 PM (GMT)
My computer is a jerkface, so I've been watching Netflix the past two nights. I decided to start Witchblade. I'm 12 of 24 episodes through so far. It's alright. It's pretty much what you expect from an action anime. Blood. Meh plot. Violence. Big bewbs. Some fail comic-relief characters.
I thought the show had a lot more potential, really. It's not bad, though. Not that great, either.

LightningBolt - January 15, 2012 07:41 PM (GMT)
FLCL is one of the most overrated anime ever.
I liked it well enough, but I can easily understand why someone wouldn't.
Life Against Death - January 15, 2012 10:48 PM (GMT)
FLCL is the best six-episode OVA ever, so you should kill your friend.
Also, the anime is called FLCL. Fooly Cooly is just the pronunciation.

I'm gonna make my totally unprecedented entry into this thread by asking if anyone has ever seen Akira, because it slightly interests me. My fear is it being too anime-ish*, however it's being remade in live-action with Helena Bonham Carter, so...
*Too anime-ish being defined as:

LightningBolt - January 16, 2012 02:32 AM (GMT)
I've never seen it. Some anime fans think it's really overrated. Most consider it a classic. I doubt it'd be "too anime-y", personally.
Life Against Death - January 16, 2012 03:37 AM (GMT)
Apparently, it's considered to be THE anime movie, but I haven't seen it. I also haven't heard anything bad about it, so I'm interested in it. And it sounds too serious to be what you define as "anime-ish".
As for the live-action film...

Life Against Death - January 16, 2012 03:34 PM (GMT)
>concurrer
Like...someone who concurs?
Conqueror of Shamballa*
So I just finished
I My Me! Strawberry Eggs last night. Definitely an awesome anime about cross-dressing, love, coming to terms with your sexuality, and reverse sexism...lots of reverse sexism. The sexism can get annoying at times, but it's necessary for the plot (would the story work if the sexist antagonists were even the tiniest bit likable? I didn't think so...). The ending was bittersweet, but it was definitely the best ending they could have gone with (as opposed to the cliche-as-fuck ending they could have done). I guess the only complaint I have is the voices could be a bit better, but I'm chalking that up to both the video quality and how old the dub is (a little over nine years, I believe). The dub was done by Geneon, and their dubs are usually average.
Oh, and did I mention the cross-dresser (Hibiki Amawa) is voiced by Crispin Freeman? That alone was reason enough for me to watch it. :P

I assumed you brought it up because you were comparing the ending to FMA to the ending of NGE.
Yeah those episodes suck? I don't know anyone who would say they were good.
I don't know if I'd say they were worse. That movie almost ruined the first FMA series for me. Those two episodes didn't do that for NGE, since I could more-or-less pretend they didn't exist and it doesn't affect the series much.
Life Against Death - January 17, 2012 06:19 AM (GMT)
I almost want to watch FMA and then watch this movie to see how bad it is.
LightningBolt - January 17, 2012 06:27 AM (GMT)
It's not terrible. It was just a very very disappointing ending. I'm probably over-exaggerating.
cscrocker - January 17, 2012 02:38 PM (GMT)
Mashup of Maxine Nightingale and Haruhi Suzumiya.
Just wanted to share and say that this is one of the best mix/mashups I have ever heard.
Outlaw454 - January 17, 2012 03:04 PM (GMT)
From a thematic stand-point, I thought the last two episodes of NGE ended things quite nicely. Sure, they don't make a goddamn bit of sense without some form of research, but when you know what they are, things start to click.
It's what happens in Shinji's mind during the Instrumentality sequence of EoE.
LightningBolt - January 17, 2012 03:13 PM (GMT)
I agree. I think you're better off having watched them, because they give you more insight into what was going on and how messed up the characters actually are. It'd be much worse if EoE didn't exist, and that was the ending to the series, but as it is I really don't think it's a huge deal.
And to add onto the FMA/NGE thing. The Conqueror of Shamballa is definitely better than the two NGE episodes, I just think its impact on the series was far greater. CoS was the ending to the original FMA series, and it ended it very poorly. Those two episodes ended the TV series, but not the series as a whole, and actually did add some development in case you didn't pick up on how messed up they were.
LightningBolt - January 19, 2012 12:23 AM (GMT)
I like Funimation and all. They're great about getting their stuff available to people. They license a lot of their stuff to Hulu and Netflix. They have a bunch of their stuff on their YouTube page and some more stuff on their website. They're also a big company as far as anime companies go, so they're also able to dub all of the stuff they license. I love that part of Funimation.
They are, however, incredibly hit-and-miss on what they license, unfortunately. They've licensed some good stuff lately, like Guilty Crown and Mirai Nikki. It seems like most of the stuff they've licensed recently, though, has looked awful. Other companies, especially Sentai, seem to be doing a better job licensing stuff.

Finished Bakemonogatari. Fantastic show. It's about the main character, Koyomi Araragi, and how he helps some people with supernatural problems. It's incredibly quirky with a very niche style, and focuses on the characters and their development as well as the dialogue between the characters more than anything else. I personally loved it. Every single character in the show is great. I also found it hilarious.
It was made by SHAFT, who also did Puella Magi Madoka Magica. You can definitely tell it was the same studio. A lot of the background art and music are similar between the shows. Both series are must-watch series. I also watched the first episode of Bakemonogatari's sequel, Nisemonogatari, and it continues the greatness.
I also just watched the Revolutionary Girl Utena movie, The Adolescence of Utena. It's a loose retelling of the TV series. It's very good, though I was pretty confused as to what the hell was happening some of the time (mostly towards the end). I have an idea of what was going on, but with a show like that, you still can't help but think you're way off base. Anyways, I'd recommend it only if you've seen the TV show. If you haven't, you'll just be completely lost. It's not a sequel or continuation or anything, and most of the characters actually have completely different personalities and slightly different looks, but you still would have to watch the TV show anyway. Which isn't a bad thing because the show is brilliant. The same VA's do the show and the movie, which was nice (I watched it subbed).
