Title: Recommend Me Some Music

failureatlife - April 13, 2011 11:33 PM (GMT)
So, every once in awhile, late at night, I have these epiphanies. Last night, I had one. I'm supposed to be a musician, right?

You: Yes, you are

Right. So I'm thinking and thinking and wondering why I don't listen to more music than I do. I mean, I like the stuff I listen to, but there's probably SO much more out there. Why, as an artist, am I depriving myself from these other flavors? And then it came to me.

Labels.

People, like you and me, tend to label EVERYTHING. Especially music.

"Oh that's shit music."

"This is SOOOOOOOO deep."

"These guys sold out."

So, I'm asking you guys to show me music. Any kind of music. And I'll listen to it. Be it blues, rock, pop, jazz, hip hop, metal, etc. I'm tired of putting all these types of music under labels, separating what's "good" and "bad". I wanna at least listen to everything.

Now, I'm not saying that I'm gonna LIKE everything. Hell no. There is still going to be stuff I don't like. But I'll know after listening to it. Thanks.

*walks away, muttering about how he's going to regret this*

LISTEN TO TEH DREAM THEATER

Okay, but seriously. iTunes was actually useful for something in recommending me two bands I had never heard of before: Redemption and Threshold. I'll give you my favorite songs from each:

"Pilot in the Sky of Dreams" - Threshold
"Memory" - Redemption

Here's some cool George Michael music too.

This.

I'll try to keep my list somewhat short.

Ghost - "Elizabeth"
Graveyard - "As the Years Pass by the Hours Bend"
Dark Tranquillity - "Terminus (Where Death is Most Alive)"
Björk - "It's Oh So Quiet"
Sybreed - "Revive My Wounds"

There, five songs. Number one...I don't even know what to call the genre, but it's rock/metal I suppose, they kick ass.

The second song is an awesome heavy blues rock song, it's so kick ass, it's very mellow and I think you'll like it. I sure as hell do.

The third song is a melodic death metal song. Don't let the words "death metal" scare you, but as you said, you're not going to label anything. Give it a listen, I personally love it, and I hope it will change your view a little on growling. Note that it's melodic death metal, not death metal. The two genres are not really similar at all.

The fourth song is...well...one of the coolest songs I know of, and I heard of it through MTV a few years back. It's some sort of pop. I don't know what you'll think of it to be honest. It's a bit odd.

The fifth, and last song I'll post for now, is an industrial metal song. Now, when I heard someone say industrial metal before, I thought to myself...urgh, Rammstein (I think they are awful btw), but these guys are brilliant. Sybreed is a band that has made me go "Holy shit".

I hope you like the songs that I posted, and I'm glad you've decided to at least try and broaden your horizons a little. :)

It sounds like swing at parts. Which is good, because swing is good.

Like I said, SINATRA. Maybe some Bing Crosby.

Guys. Slight delay. Since I have a bad sinus infection in my middle ear, It hurts to listen to music with headphones, which is usually the only way I can. So Imma hold off on listening for awhile. kthnx.
