Mariet is far from immune to the allure of the Christmas spirit. Some feel that Christmas isnít complete without a grand live Christmas tree, and this year in Mariet people can find their fill of them. The community has organized a Celebration of Lights. A designated path through the forest is lined with personally decorated displays, with the help of cleverly hidden mobile generators. The organizers and volunteers put their heart into this display, and it is open to the public for nightly walks. Can you feel the Christmas spirit yet?

Erin was having a blissful evening cuddling up in bed with her favourite person watching scary movies. You couldn't beat simple nights like that! Things had been a little rocky lately where this relationship was concerned, but she was starting to feel that things were back on track now... they'd managed to sort things out and she felt it was only right that they just moved on. She'd missed spending quality time with him like this and was actually quite pleased that he would soon be finished with school for the summer... it meant they'd have so much more time for each other. Not to mention their upcoming trip to Australia! She really was starting to get very excited about that now.

It was nearing midnight and they'd just finished watching a movie, but she didn't really have any intention to get started on another one. It was getting a little late now, especially when they would both have to work the next day. Though that didn't mean she'd finished having her fun for the night. A simple kiss seemed to have led to something else... and now... well they were both half naked in bed underneath the covers. A giggle escaped her lips as she found herself on top of him, leaning in to kiss his neck. "You... are soooo sexy" she murmured against his ear before trailing her lips down over his neck, one hand moving over his chest and down his stomach until it rested at the top of his boxers in a teasing manner. She smirked faintly as she placed tiny kisses over his jawline and then at last meeting his lips with a hungry kiss, her fingers dancing along the waistline of his boxers. One thing was for sure, she was quite happy right now.

Tonight had been Charlie's idea, but he'd known that Erin would jump at the chance of having a movie night. They did love their cosy nights in after all, he never complained about snuggling up to her in the dark. It was just as well they'd managed to patch things up lately because he'd really missed spending so much quality time with her. Roll on a few weeks time and he'd have all the time in the world for her with no distractions from work. Ah, he really did love the summer months, and not just because the weather was warmer!

He'd had such a good evening so far and he could tell that Erin had as well, she'd been in a happy enough mood for a start. And things were just starting to get even better. He might have known that things would eventually heat up, it was hard cuddling up to her and not having any other thoughts! But it looked like he had her right where he wanted her... on top of him. Nope, he certainly wasn't complaining. A smirk crossed his lips as he let his hands wander over her shoulders, sighing contently as she kissed his neck. That was always such a turn on, clearly he'd taught her well! He reached a hand up to her hair, running his fingers through it as he felt her hand travelling down his body... getting lower and lower. "You're killing me..." he smirked, he knew all too well that she was teasing him with her hand at the top of his boxers. He couldn't deny her of a kiss though and soon he found his lips attached to hers, his free hand attempting to pull her in closer. His lips caressed hers hungrily, trying to heat things up as he tried to find the clasp of her bra... however, he gasped slightly upon hearing a sudden noise. A telephone was ringing. He sighed and broke off from their kiss, looking towards the bedside table where both their phones laid. "Ugh... seriously, who would call at this time" he said, it was nearly midnight! He assumed it was probably just someone calling the wrong number. Choosing to ignore it, he kissed her again, but the phone ringing was really offputting. Sighing again, he reached over, realising it was Erin's phone that was ringing. He picked it up and passed it to her, "It's yours, babe. Who's ringing, a secret boyfriend I don't know about?" he joked, leaning his head back against the pillow as he waited to see if she would answer it or not.

She should have known that having a cosy night in like this would lead to something else. Not that she had any problem with that, there'd been a lack of intimacy lately and she felt it was only right that they made up for lost time! She had a feeling there was only so much teasing he could take, so she was going to have to give in in a minute. "You love it really" she said in a low voice with a smirk on her face, she wasn't too good at trying to be sexy, everytime she tried she just ended up laughing... or embarassing herself.

Her hand was just about to dip lower when she too heard the ringing of a telephone. That was enough to make her retract her hand and make her look up... though only for a second. "I don't know. Just ignore it. No distractions" she smirked again as she leaned in to kiss his neck again, though that phone was still ringing and she could tell Charlie wasn't going to leave it. Of course, it was odd that someone would be calling this late and she was so caught up in the moment with him that it didn't occur to her that it might be something or importance. She sighed faintly when he passed her phone to her, almost surprised that it was hers instead of his... it wasn't like she even got many phonecalls. She smirked again, "Ohh, you weren't meant to know about that" she giggled slightly as she looked at the screen of her phone, "Nah... unknown number. Probably some kid prank calling me or something" she shrugged and rejected the call, putting the phone back down on the beside table. "Now... where was I?" she grinned as she turned her attention back to him again, her hand running over his chest as she traced her lips over his jawline once more.

To be fair, she was right. It was fun to be teased like that, it kept him on edge and left him wanting more. Besides, it was better than just rushing straight into things, where was the fun in that? Though there was only so much teasing he could take, thankfully she knew him well enough by now to know that. He was sure the same went for her as well, he could be very good at teasing her and keeping her waiting until he had her practically begging for him. It was all part of the fun and in his experience, made everything much more worthwhile.

It could have been quite easy to just ignore the phone ringing but it wouldn't seem to stop, besides he'd wwanted to know who's the offending phone was. He had no idea who would be ringing Erin so late at night, he for one hated it when the phone went at this time of night, it made him worry that something was wrong. He seriously hoped that wasn't the case tonight. He grinned slightly as she took the phone, though she didn't seem particularly worried... he was sure it was just someone calling the wrong number. "More than likely" he laughed slightly and watched as she put the phone back down. Right, back to business! "Ahhh..." he smirked and then took hold of her hand, leading it further down his body, "I think you were... right here" he said softly as he stopped her hand on his crotch. That was more like it. He cupped his free hand over her cheek and attempted to pull her in for another kiss... but damn... the phone started to ring again. He sighed and rolled his eyes, "Someone really doesn't want us to have a sex life" he laughed, though on a more serious note, he was worried that the phone was ringing again. "Maybe you should just answer it?" he suggested, reaching over to pass her the phone again. He wasn't going to scare her, but it was rarely ever good news when the phone rang so late at night... unless she was right and it was just someone pranking her.

If she hadn't been distracted by him, then perhaps she might have paid more attention to the fact that her phone was ringing so late at night. She wasn't even sure why she still had it on, the only person that was ever likely to contact her at this time of night might be Charlie... but he'd usually only do that by text, and besides, he was here with her right now! Had she been by herself though, she would probably be panicking a bit, she always dreaded the phone going late at night... just like she dreaded someone knocking on her door with bad news.

With any luck whoever was calling would just give up and leave her in peace. She didn't want any interruptions right now! It was time to have some fun and some well deserved intimacy with her man. Charlie seemed to have the same idea too and she giggled slightly as he moved her hand further down his body, "Naughty..." she smirked, letting her hand rest there for a moment whilst he kissed her again. Unfortunately it didn't last long enough. She sighed too, "I know... how rude" she said, she was tempted to just ignore the phonecall again and carry on with what they were doing, but now she'd started to take a bit more notice... it wasn't normal that her phone was going this late at night. She guessed she really should answer it though, just in case it was something important. Taking the phone from him, she sighed again lightly and then rolled to one side next to him putting the phone to her ear. "Hello?" she answered, "Yes... this is Erin" she confirmed it was her before the woman on the other end carried on... and when Erin realised where she was calling from, her heart skipped a beat. "Oh... god... okay... is... is she going to be alright?" she bit her lip, her tone of voice slightly strained as she went into panic mode. "I'll... I'll be there as soon as I can... thankyou" she could feel tears pricking at her eyelids as she disconnected the call and then sat up, "Oh god... my gran... she's been taken to hospital... I... I need to get there" she said, her voice wobbling as she rummaged around for her clothes. She didn't know the full details of everything other than her gran had been taken to hospital in a bad state. Shit. Now her worst nightmare could be coming true and she wasn't ready. Not yet.

She must have been in a good mood, because he knew that normally she would probably have panicked straight away at the thought of her phone ringing so late at night. She'd mentioned to him before that she was scared something might happen in the middle of the night, sometimes he wondered if that was why she ended up asking him to stay the night so much sometimes. Not that he minded, he'd been the one suggesting to move in with her. But that was a whole different story and he wasn't going to be bringing that subject up again... he'd leave the ball in her court now, it seemed like the best thing to do.

He could tell he wasn't going to be getting any action now, whoever was calling clearly wanted to speak to her and he got this bad feeling that it was something urgent. For Erin's sake he seriousy hoped it wasn't, but everyone knew that when you got a call that late at night it was never usually good news. He was worried for her now. He watched as she took the phonecall, turning to one side so he was facing her... listening as she responded to whoever was on the other end. Oh this wasn't good... he could see it written all over her face. That was enough to make him anxious. He could tell it was about her grandmother, she wasn't in a terribly good state and he knew Erin worried about her a lot. It was going to be heartbreaking if something happened, but he wasn't going to jump to conclusions, if anything he was going to have to be strong for her. He bit his lip and waited until she'd put the phone down, "Alright... alright... don't panic" he said softly as he sat up and then touched her shoulder lightly. He could sense she was scared and quite rightly so, it was never nice hearing that someone you cared about so much was in a bad way. "Do you know what's happened?" he asked, the phonecall had been quick so he doubted she knew all that much yet. Without wasting anytime he slid out of bed and reached for his jeans, "I'll drive us to the hospital... we can be there in no time" he said as he started to change back into his clothes again. It was amazing how much the mood could change in a matter or seconds... not to mention how much of a passion killer that had just been.

As soon as she'd answered that phonecall she'd known that it wasn't going to be good news. She felt bad for ignoring that first call now but at least she'd eventually answered it, even if she really hadn't wanted to hear the news that her gran had been rushed into hospital. This was exactly the sort of thing that Erin dreaded happening, she was quite close to her grandmother but she knew she was deteriorating quite a lot recently. It was such a sad thing to see and she knew she was going to have to prepare for the worst sooner or later... but what if it happened tonight? She wasn't ready. She would never be ready to lose someone so close to her.

Panicking was exactly what she was doing. How could she not? She was so shocked by receiving that call that she hardly knew what to say. Not to mention that she couldn't really get any words out anyway. She fumbled around for her clothes, trying her best to get back into them but even that felt like a struggle when she was trying to rush as fast as she could. "I... I don't know... apparently she's been really unwell today... and... and when one of the careworkers took her to the bathroom tonight... she... she collapsed" she said with a strained voice, feeling the tears slide down her cheek as she changed into her clothes again. "I'm scared" she mumbled, her voice weaker than ever as she pulled on her cardigan. "It... it must be serious... they wouldn't have called me until the morning otherwise would they?" she looked at him with a worried expression on her face. She grabbed her phone again and reached for her handbag, sliding it across her body once she was ready to leave. She was terrifed about what was going to happen when they got to the hospital.

It was never nice hearing that one of your close family members was really unwell. He remembered having to go through the same thing with his own grandparents. Bless them, they were long gone now but he still missed them. You really did have to treasure every moment you had with your grandparents, especially when they were elderly and at that stage where they weren't going to get any better. Poor Erin was going to have to go through this and it really upset him to think how devastated she would be if something really terrible happened tonight. Neither of them were prepared for that, but it just proved how things could happen out of the blue. He was praying that her gran would be alright though, they hadn't even got to the hospital yet, they could make their own judgements once they found out what was wrong.

Charlie bit his lip as he listened to her, well he had to admit that it didn't sound too good but elderly people were always falling ill. He wasn't even too sure what to say, he wanted to reassure her but he was afraid he might get her hopes up too much and he didn't want to do that in case there was nothing more that could be done. "Well, at least she wasn't alone. The hospital is the best place to be... I'm sure she'll be fine" he smiled, he couldn't help but try and reassure her now... he hated seeing that terrifed look on her face. It didn't take him long to get his clothes back on and he soon jumped to her side, giving her a quick hug, "Sweetheart... I'm right here" he said softly, he'd hold her hand all night if he had to and he wouldn't leave her at the hospital by herself. He rubbed her back lightly as he pulled away, "Look... let's not go jumping to conclusions. We'll see what they say when we get there, okay? You ready?" he asked and then reached for her hand, leading the way out of her bedroom and down the stairs. He was already fumbling in his jeans pocket for his car key before he'd even opened the front door, he was keen to get to the hospital as quickly as they could... just in case. Opening the door, he stepped outside and let go of her hand as he headed straight for the car, making sure to hold the door open for her first so she could get in.

She might not have prepared herself for something like this happening, but it was always in the back of her mind that her gran wasn't too well. She hadn't gone into a care home to get better had she? Except Erin really didn't want to have to think about losing her and all the heartache she was going to suffer when the time came. She was the only grandparent she had left and the one that she'd been the closest to. She wanted more time with her, but there was never going to be a right time to let go.

Erin nodded her head slowly, perhaps it was a relief to know that someone had been there when her gran had collapsed. What if she'd been alone and no one had found her until it was too late? She couldn't even think about that. "I hope so" she said weakly, but it was hard to know anything until they actually got there and found out all the details. All she could do right now was pray that she would be alright and would get through whatever had happened. Erin stood there feeling a bit lost as he moved in to hug her, but she was still in so much shock that she didn't try to hug him back... even though she really wanted to just cling on to him and never let go. She smiled weakly at him when he pulled away, she appreciated that he was trying to be optimistic but she wasn't exactly holding out much hope. "I guess I am..." she said when he asked if she was ready. She was nervous about what she was going to find when she got to the hospital.

She followed him out of the house to the car, letting go of his hand once she went to sit down in the front passenger's seat, fastening her seatbelt and leaning her head back. She let him drive off quietly and turned to look out of the window as they left her housing estate. "What if we're too late?" she mumbled, turning to look at him, biting her lip as that anxious feeling continued to take over her body. It was the worst feeling in the world.

He really hadn't imagined that anything like this would happen tonight. You couldn't exactly foresee something like this, it just went to show how things could come around the corner when you least expected it. He supposed it was just as well he'd been with her tonight because otherwise he would have just received a very frantic phonecall from her. He didn't like to think what was going to happen when they got to the hospital, but he knew he was going to support her as much as he could, whatever the outcome was.

One minute they'd been half naked in bed not being able to keep their hands off each other, and now here they were both in shock over that sudden piece of news. Oh how the mood could change in a matter of seconds. He had other things on his mind now and that meant getting her to the hospital as quickly as possible... in case the news really was bad.

Once they were both seated in the car, he took off straight away. Not that he wanted to speed or anything, but he didn't want to waste anytime in getting there. Thankfully it wouldn't be a very long drive, but every second could make a difference right now. He turned to look at her quickly, being careful not to take his eyes off the road for too long, "Erin. You shouldn't be thinking like that, honey" he said softly, he wanted to stay as positive for her as possible. He reached one had over for a moment and touched her knee lightly in a comforting manner. He didn't say much more though in the fear that he might give her false hope. Thankfully, they soon arrived at the hospital, "I can drop you at the front entrance if you want to run on in? I can park the car and then catch you up?" he suggested, it wasn't like it would take him too long but he didn't want to be holding things up for her.

She appreciated that he was just trying to stay positive but she wasn't an optimist like he was, she feared the the worst and worried over everything. If only she could share the same outlook on life that he did, in fact it was a wonder he hadn't started to rub off on her yet... she wished she was more like him. "Well how can I not?" she almost snapped at him, it was hard to look on the bright side when she had a really bad feeling about this. She wouldn't relax until she knew everything was going to be alright... and if it wasn't... then she was probably going to collapse or something. She felt physically sick already. She only glanced down when he put a hand on her knee, of course that set the tears off again but she didn't say anything else, she just wanted to get to the hospital before it was too late.

She sat up straight in her seat as she finally saw the hospital coming into sight, honestly she was half tempted to just jump out now and run the rest of the way, but she held on. Quickly, she looked over at him as he suggested her getting out of the car before he went to park it somewhere. That seemed like a good enough idea to her. "Okay..." she nodded her head, watching as they approached the main entrance. "Don't be too long though, promise?" she asked, looking worried for a second before she opened the door and got out once he'd pulled up at the front doors. Now came the part she was dreading. She headed inside as quickly as possible and reported to reception, not too surprised that she was told to wait. It was always the same at hospitals, they made you sit around for ages before telling you anything or letting you see your loved one. Thankfully she didn't have to wait too long for a nurse to show up who led her down a corridor to a seated area. A doctor was seeing her grandmother at the moment so unsurprisingly she wouldn't be able to see her yet, but Erin tried to get as much information out of the nurse as possible. She'd been slipping in and out of consciousness apparently and her diabetes had been playing up all day, leading her to collapse earlier on in the evening. But she wasn't too late. She just had to pray that she pulled through but all she could do now was pull up a chair and wait.

Charlie wouldn't exactly blame her if she wanted to snap at him. It was funny, for two people that were so similar in so many ways, they did tend to both have a different outlook on life sometimes. He was constantly trying to stay positive about everything, even when he was going through tough times himself he just tried to see the light at the end of the tunnel. He liked to think that things happened for a reason, though he guessed it was hard trying to see the light in a situation like this. He would just offer as much support to Erin as she wanted, and whether she liked it or not, he was going to remain positive.

It didn't matter to him what she wanted to do, but if he dropped her off then she could get inside far quicker. Though he would totally understand if she wanted to wait for him so they could go in together. Luckily she seemed to agree with his suggestion though and he turned to smile at her, "I Promise. See you in a minute" he said softly as he watched her get out of the car and head towards the front entrance. It didn't take him too long to find a parking space, he supposed that was the one good thing about coming here so late at night, normal visiting hours had finished ages ago.

After locking the car, he quickly headed through the parking lot before arriving at the entrance to the hospital, making his way through reception. Of course, he had no idea where he was going but after making a quick enquiry at the front desk he headed down the correct corridor. He was getting a bit worried now for Erin's sake, she clearly wasn't prepared for anything really bad happening tonight and he had to pray that everything would be alright. He dreaded to think what sort of state she'd end up in if her gran didn't make it. As he turned the corner he realised Erin was sat down... well she wasn't in tears but he wasn't sure if she'd even been told anything yet. "Found you" he smiled, settling down in the seat next to her, "What's happening then? Have they told you anything yet, princess?" he asked, trying to reach for her hand. He knew what it was like at hospitals, they made such a fuss of getting you here and then left you waiting for ages before you got any news.

Erin wondered how it was even possible for people to stay positive when they were put in a situation like this, it was just natural to think the worse. If anything, Charlie was a good influence on her and she did hope that one day she might start seeing things the way he did. But she really struggled to see the light in situations like this, she just saw the negative in everything. She guessed she was stuck in her ways for now, she'd just have to hope that she might change one of these days.

Ugh. Erin hated hospitals. She hated them with a passion. The last time she'd been here had been when Charlie had had that awful asthma attack on his birthday and she'd had to call an ambulance. Watching him struggle for breath had been the scariest moment of her life and she was just thankful now that she'd called for help just in time. It had made her realise just how easily you could lose someone you loved so much. It wasn't something she liked to think about but it had given her such a fright at the time.

She sat there nervously tapping her foot as she waited for more news and for Charlie to find her. Luckily she didn't have to wait too long and she soon slipped her hand in his as he sat down beside her. "Well... she's still alive if that's what you mean" she said, well that was something she supposed, but it could still be all downhill from here. "She's diabetic though... I guess it's just been getting a lot worse lately... her age doesn't exactly help" she sighed slightly, she was eighty two after all, she was getting weaker by the day. "I can't even go in and see her yet... the... the doctor's with her... what if... what if she doesn't make it?" she managed to ask with a strained voice, feeling the tears pricking at her eyelids again.

Everyone was different and he understood that not everyone could see the positive in things. Hell, even he had his days where he felt so low that he wondered if things would ever get any better. Thankfully he never seemed to stay in that sort of mood for very long, he was quite good at picking himself back up again. But if you managed to catch him in a depressive mood like that then you knew that something was wrong.

Charlie didn't exactly want to be reminded of the last time he'd been here, he hated how much he'd scared Erin that night. It hadn't exactly been the best of birthdays either! There was nothing worse than ending up in a hospital bed on your birthday. He'd like to say that they could laugh about it now, but it really wasn't a laughing matter, not when he could have seriously been in trouble that night if Erin hadn't been there to help him. He didn't even want to think about it.

He assumed it was a good sign that he hadn't found her in sat there in an uncontrollable state, but then he wouldn't be surprised if she hadn't even been told anything yet. He smiled slightly as he sat down next to her, rather glad that nothing terrible had happened... yet. "Oh, well that's good" he said, giving her hand a squeeze as he looked at her. "She'll fight it... I'm sure. You know what it's like Erin, elderly people fall ill all the time... it just takes them longer to recover than people our age" he said, he wasn't sure if telling her that was really going to help. He gave her hand a squeeze again, he could see how upset and scared she was at the thought of losing her grandmother. "Baby..." he said softly, "Stop getting ahead of yourself... let's wait and see what the doctor says" he smiled, "Things might not be as bad as you think" he said, and there he was again, trying his best to stay positive for her. One of them had to stay strong anyway and he was pretty sure that was his job.

Erin knew it was never a good idea to cross Charlie when he was in a bad mood. Hell, she'd had enough of that quite recently, there was nothing worse than someone being in a sulk because they couldn't have their own way. Thankfully they'd sorted things out and he seemed to be back to his usual self around her once more. She'd only really seen him in a depressive mood about once, and that really hadn't been nice at all... in fact it was hard to believe that someone like him could ever feel so low. The last thing she'd ever expected was him to break down in front of her... but that was something they never spoke about anymore, she wasn't sure what it would do to his pride if she ever mentioned it again.

She felt a bit better now he was by her side, she'd hate to be here all by herself just in case the very worst happened and she had no one to comfort her. She gripped his hand tightly, thankful for him being so reassuring, but she wasn't entirely sure that she believed him. "I know... but... but everytime I see her she's even worse... I don't know h-how much longer she can k-keep fighting" she shrugged, a few tears slipping down her cheeks. Erin could never tell when her gran was going to end up in hospital next and she needed a lot of care in the nursing home. Truth was, she knew she didn't have long left, Erin just had a hard time trying to accept that. She was crying again as she felt him squeeze her hand a second time, "Doesn't look good though does it" she mumbled, shrugging her shoulders as she looked at him. "Even if she pulls through this time... it's... it's going to happen eventually isn't it?" she bit her lip, he'd know what she meant. She was terrifed of losing her, but she knew her days were numbered now. "I don't know how I'll cope, Charlie" she admitted, looking down at the floor as she blinked back her tears.
