Long blonde curly hair
Ash is a lanky woman, her limbs, body, and appendages are long and slender. She doesn’t have a lot of meat on her bones (so to speak) but is not yet unhealthy. While she is toned she does not have a lot of muscle mass (as it was never important for her to have any). Yet because of her height she can be quiet an imposing woman. Though really when it comes down to it, unlike some, she is not athletic but rather very soft and feminine.
Slender and with small features. Some might even say she has a whimsical face reminisce of fantastical characters, others would simply describe it as very dainty. Quick to smile even when she is not having a good day. The one thing about her face is that it is an open book. She does not hide her emotions, she rarely even makes an attempt. Feeling what she feels it reads clearly on her face. Anyone with even the smallest knowledge of body language can easily read what she is feeling at any given moment.
There is no doubt about it, Ash is a very feminine girl. She likes to wear soft flowing fabrics, dresses, skirts, and occasionally pants. She likes to wear pretty things and because of her body shape she can get away with a lot. She is not one to sacrifice looking good for comfort, but that doesn’t mean she is a fan of being in pain for fashion. The exception to this is that she very much prefers bare feet or socks to shoes. There is a certain amount of hippy in her attire, a sort of free flowing flower child feeling.
Quick and light are the easiest ways to describe how she moves. Ash moves like a butterfly, gently fluttering around barely making a sound. It is not a trained grace but rather something that she just always had. When in her bare feet the woman is very good at sneaking up on people, not with that intention but simply because she is very quiet.
Despite, and perhaps because of, what she went through as a child there is an innocence about her. She lived in the closed off walls of a compound but she also saw and lived first hand in a doomsday cult. Being cut off from the outside world meant that she was slow to learn the ways of those outside, and yet she trusted easily, perhaps too easily. She continues to believe that Nicolai and the other elders in the cult were the exception not the rule to humanity's true nature. In some says Ash is rather immature for her age and often gets mistaken for someone younger not simply because of her physical appearance but because of how she acts around other people. Sure, she had to grow up fast in many ways, but in others, she is still a child looking for guidance.
Ashriel is a sweet girl. If there is a mean bone in her body no one has ever seen it. She had learned to be tough, but ultimately she is a rather gentle soul who does not seek to harm anyone. She is a make love not war type, and believes that there is good in just about everyone. Though she does believe she looked into the face of evil before and it certainly wasn't anything like who she had met out here.
She is a very curious woman. This has gotten her into trouble in the past, and it most certainly will continue to get her into trouble. The phrase “curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought him back,” adequately describes the nature of her interest in the unknown. The problem is that she is also very impulsive. She doesn’t always understand the consequences to her actions and more often than not will simply act without foreseeing how it could end poorly. She is the first one to push that button that says ‘do not push’ and the first to go into the door that says ‘do not enter’. Not because she is a trouble maker, but because she wants to know what will happen. Ashriel very much learns through experience.
She is overly friendly and will initiate physical contact with almost anyone. Hugging is her favourite way to do this. She has been known to tackle friends from behind and wrap herself around them tightly. She enjoys holding onto people that she is with. She is a friendly outgoing young woman who, while not always willing to completely speak her mind, will talk to just about anyone. She doesn't always get pop culture references and, having lived in relative isolation for so long, perhaps fully doesn't understand the complexities or dangers. She lived a very sheltered life until she was sixteen and even while she was helping build a case and in witness protection she didn't exactly have free reign either. Thus she is getting use to being able to push the boundaries.
Ashriel is extremely intuitive. She trusts she gut about situations. Because of how she was raised the idea of making choices with her head instead of her heart is still knew and at times she does make choices without thinking. It is something that she will learn in time. For now it would be fair to say that she makes choices based on emotional choices and the will of her heart over what others might see as being logical. While she might not have much street smarts, she is a very empathetic individual. Ashriel feels her way through life, and thus she is very in tune with other people’s emotions. No, she can’t feel them (obviously) but she is very good at reading them, and understanding them. She is a very tactile person who is constantly touching things.
This girl is extremely emotional. We aren’t talking about a little cry here and there, but full mood swings ranging the spectrum. Coupled with her need to be liked this can be disastrous. She can cry at the drop of a hat and be laughing not long after. It would be fair to call her sensitive. Despite all this good natured stuff she is also very stubborn and persistent. She doesn’t give up easily which can make her a tad annoying if you are trying to shake her. Even after she bawls her eyes out over something she likely will still try it again.
While she might not seem like it, there is an inner courage inside the mostly happy girl. A inner fire that causes her to push forward even when she feels alone and isolated. Sure, she won’t be winning any wars any time soon but she sure as hell will give it a try to help a friend. Loyal to a fault she is the type of person that you could kick while she's down and she'd still help you. It takes a lot to shake Ash. She seeks the approval and support of other people, and while she definitely has an independent streak it's similar to that of a child, she will do things on her own, but then she wants to return and show you just what she did. She is desperate for approval.
She is also a bit of an insomniac, though sometimes it’s self imposed because of her fear, other times she simply can’t quiet her mind enough to sleep. Ash has an amazing memory. While not eidetic, she is great at remembering names and faces and things. She remains a spiritual individual though she cannot see herself returning to an organized religion.
The woman carries around immense amount of guilt. Watching her family and everyone she knew poisoned by those they trusted most and then not being able to save them. It weighs on her greatly. It haunts her and likely is part of the reason she cannot sleep well. It is also the only clue that she is, perhaps, not as innocent as she appears at first. There is a serious side to her, one which contemplates what happened to her as a child and one which realizes that there is a reason to be afraid of the dark. There is a part of the young woman who believes that the deaths of the fellow believers at the compound was a direct result of her rebellion against Nicolai, and ultimately against God.
Ash is an energetic individual, she is bouncy and relatively happy. It seems that she has some secret reserve of energy that she pulls out now and again. Bubbly and personable she is hard to keep down. Over all she is a follower. She likes to please other people and she does take orders well. She is relatively happy and doesn't really like to talk about the bad things that often, it makes her feel sad and that is naturally something she doesn't like. Despite the pain she prefers to keep it in and smile through the pain.
The girl is a dreamer. Her head is in the clouds so to speak. She has a great imagination for better or worse. She likes stories, and can often be lost in her own head.
Ash can be rather blunt. She doesn't mean it to be rude or mean, but simply she often says what is on her mind not realizing that perhaps there is a more subtle way to say it. Her bluntness is likely a result of the the environment she was raised in and the fact that tact wasn't always something that was required. That isn't to say that it's a skill she doesn't possess (she hates to think she hurt people's feelings or has caused someone to dislike her and won't say something if she thinks it will hurt someone's feelings, but she might simply not understand WHY it hurt someone's feelings). Her observations about the world are certainly unique and she'll probably share them with you if you stick around for a few minutes.
If Ash was an "element" she'd be water, strong yet flexible. She has learned how to adapt and yet remains true to herself, faced with hardship she does not give in but perseveres. She bends but does not break.
"“Nothing in the world is more flexible and yielding than water. Yet when it attacks the firm and the strong, none can withstand it, because they have no way to change it. So the flexible overcome the adamant, the yielding overcome the forceful. Everyone knows this, but no one can do it.” -Lao Tsu

There is very little that Ashriel remembers from before the CPR, she remembers Christmas mornings, and a boy at school who made fun of her lanky appearance. She remembers the smell of her dad's beat up old car, and the carefree way in which her parents lived their lives. She even remembers the day she met Nicolai Loiselle, the tall dark haired bearded man who promised her parents and their young daughter a place in the next world if they joined the Celestial Path of Righteousness, the only true way to path to surviving the end of days. Her mother, easily persuaded on such matters, demanded immediately that they pack up all their things and move hours from their home in Mariet to join Nicolai's commune. She remembers her father's protests, the way he complained about paying off college loans, and his dream to start their own family business. She remembers waking up in the car, already so far from home and the silence, her parents still not agreeing on this plan of action.
Life inside the walls of the CPR was difficult to adjust to for the precocious young girl. There were so many rules, what to eat, what to wear, how she was suppose to act around different members, what she could and could not do. Every aspect of her young life became structured and dictated by "The Elders" as the group recruited more members and prepared for "the end of days." When she was seven Ashriel became a member of the children's branch of CPR, where she was taught indoctrinated with the cults belief system, it's structure, hierarchy, world view, etc. It was in this period that the group's more malevolent side began to show. Even as a child she had begin to notice things, the way certain adults acted around each other, the stories Nicolai told began to get scarier and scarier.
Over time her mother began to grow more distant and secretive while her father grew more agitated with the group. While he dared not speak out formally, he constantly promised his daughter that he'd find a way to get her out. He was given more and more tasks, presumably to prevent him from having too much time to think of a way to escape. More and more he would spend time out of the house where the family lived, and while he was out his wife and Ash's mother would entertain other members of the CPR. Even at her young age she knew that something wasn't right with what her mother was doing, and often times she was told to either not leave her room or to leave the house and not come back until dinner time. While she remained close to her mother she would grow more distant from her mother over the next few years. She occupied herself however she could, and for a period of time it meant talking with a child on the other side of the wall of the compound. This outsider was not someone that she instantly befriended. It took time for him to convince her that he wasn't the devil trying to tempt her. They spoke for hours at time and slowly began to dig under the wall. He was the first person that she met from the outside since moving into compound.
Meanwhile things began to grow more radical within the cult. The summer before she turned sixteen the compounded was raided by the authorities, and some of the children were taken away. It was used as proof of the evil of the outside world. Not long after she was sixteen Nicolai asked the young Ash to accept the honour of being part of his inner circle. While she knew she should have accepted, he was after all, the leader of the community and of the religion, she knew he was not asking her to sit there and advise him. She would join the seven other woman that were his 'companions'. What she did was unthinkable. She said no, but more than that, she said no in front of the entire community. This sealed her fate, Nicolai said it was proof of the end. He said that somehow the devil had infiltrated the protective walls and it was only a matter of time before the end would come. They declared that she was possessed by the Devil and he ordered her locked up in the barn while they prepared.
Alone in a back room she spent days at a time in the dark. The elders would visit only to attempt to 'beat the devil out of her' at night, when no one was around, her father would sneak in and tell her about what was going on outside, and promise that he would find a way to get her to the outside the walls of the compound. Her father told her that Nicolai planned to kill them all, that he had found the plans in one of the Elder's books. While she could not believe that Nicolai or any of the elders would do that, she also knew to trust the word of her father.
It was snowing, something that she hadn't seen all that often, the night that she was taken from barn. The congregation had been gathered in the chapel. Nicolai preached that the end of days was upon them, and that all their preparation was ready. Everyone was given a cup of holy water. That The Beast's army was at their doors and it was only a matter of time before they all fell. When it came time to drink her father took hers as well, told her to do what everyone else did, and that he loved her very much. Slowly people began to fall, one by one. She followed suit, resting limply against her father. Her head on his chest she heard the breath leave him. It was hear Ash truly learned the silence that was death. The utter silence that fell on the room was unbelievable. It was broken by Nicolai and a few of the Elders, they spoke loudly, assuming all were dead or nearly so, as they left the chapel. Once she knew that she was alone the young girl broke down. Surrounding her was nearly everyone she had ever known, their bodies folding over each other, but unmistakably no longer with her in spirit. The evil that she had always been told lived outside of the walls, that would contaminate anyone who left the walls, she believed one hundred percent, had just walked out of the chapel of their own free will.
Fear can be a powerful motivator. It kept her frozen in place for a long time, just staring at all that was around her, it also was what got her moving again. Smoke filled the chapel quickly, but when she attempted to leave through the front door it was stuck. There was no other way out, as far as the young woman knew, and it wasn't long before she knew she would die alongside her family. The only thing she could do was pray. Her prayers were answered by Agent Attwater. A man that she had met in the raid on the compound the previous summer. Her survival was touted as a miracle by those who had come in hopes of finally dispersing the cult only to find that most of the group was dead and those in charge had moved on. The young woman was naturally devastated. Thrust into a world she did not know, and alone, she struggled to find her way in world she did not understand.
She lived in Baton Rouge for a time in a halfway house. It was here that she learned the basics of her new world, how to balance a check book, open a bank account, apply for a job, and it was also here that she completed formal education. In 2009, on her 20th birthday she returned to the place of her birth, Mariet Louisiana.

A charismatic sociopath of a man in is late 50s. He was the leader of the CPR cult and constantly surrounded himself with a harem of women. When Ash refused to join this inner circle he declared her possessed by the devil and a sign that the end times had begun. Organizing a mass suicide of the group to "save their souls" he and a few other Elders escaped the compound and haven't been heard from since. Rumor has it he moved to somewhere in South America to start fresh.
Agent Henry Attwater
The agent in charge of the CPR case. They stayed in touch for awhile, but as it became less likely that they would catch Nicolai anytime soon they drifted away. He still calls every now and again to check on her, make sure she's not in a cult or anything again, and to update her on the case.
[x] Raised in a cult, got out at 16
