Mariet is far from immune to the allure of the Christmas spirit. Some feel that Christmas isnít complete without a grand live Christmas tree, and this year in Mariet people can find their fill of them. The community has organized a Celebration of Lights. A designated path through the forest is lined with personally decorated displays, with the help of cleverly hidden mobile generators. The organizers and volunteers put their heart into this display, and it is open to the public for nightly walks. Can you feel the Christmas spirit yet?

A whole week had passed since that disastrous evening which had led to her arguing with Charlie. It had been her father's fault for trying to lecture her over the dinner table, Charlie had stepped in when she clearly hadn't been able to defend herself but she'd gotten annoyed by just how much he'd interfered. Looking back on it now, she realised he'd only been standing up for her but at the time she'd just felt so completely awkward. It hadn't been fun shouting in the street at each other, especially not when he'd turned all possessive... that was surely enough to freak anyone out. If things couldn't have gotten any worse, the night had ended when she'd tripped over a curb and hit the ground. Thankfully there was no serious damage done, just a few cuts and bruises that were starting to heal, but falling over had been a bit of a shock, not to mention the humiliation she'd felt. Still, a week had passed and she'd managed to finally calm down over everything.

She hadn't seen Charlie for a full week. That was a long time for them, even if they didn't spend quality time with each other everyday, Charlie would usually pop into the attic at least for a little while to see her. It felt odd not seeing him but she just hadn't felt up to it, she didn't want to see him until she'd calmed down. A week had been enough time, she'd tried her best to sort things out with her dad... and she'd had to apologise on Charlie's behalf, there was no way she wanted things to be awkward between them in the future. After some time and space to herself, and getting annoyed by the text messages that Charlie was sending her on a daily basis, she decided it was probably time they sorted things out.

It was getting late into the evening now, but she didn't tell him beforehand that she was going to turn up. It wasn't even very often that she went round to his apartment anymore, espeically not since he had a housemate now, but she figured she would turn up and surprise him anyway. Besides, she needed to just get this out of the way so they could hopefully get back to normal. That was unless they started arguing again tonight, she could never quite tell how things were going to go with them sometimes. She'd brought his jacket with her tonight since she'd walked off with it a week ago and he was probably wanting it back by now. Holding the jacket tightly in her arms, she pressed the doorbell to his apartment and then stood back slightly, taking a deep breath as she waited for him to come to the door.

The fact that Erin had gone a whole week without wanting to talk to him had made him realise that he must have really upset her. It hadn't been his intention, in fact he'd just done what he'd thought was best, sticking up for her when her dad had clearly been having a go at her. What else was he supposed to do? He hadn't been prepared to just sit there and let Erin be spoken to like that. But maybe he'd ended up going a bit too far, he felt like he'd really annoyed her dad for a start, not something he would ever have imagined happening. But it had. He hoped it wasn't too late to put things right, but he couldn't see how her dad was going to want to talk to him again after all this.

That wasn't all he had to worry about though. He'd been panicking so much over everything that had happened and the way that night had ended. He felt that it was totally his fault that she'd fallen over and hurt herself, he'd shouted at her and pulled her arm a little rougher than he should have done. He couldn't help but wonder if that was the real reason she wasn't speaking to him. He wouldn't blame her, he knew he'd been out of order and he shouldn't have acted so possessive of her. At the time he'd thought he was just looking out for her, but maybe he really had gone a step too far.

The last thing he was expecting tonight was a visitor, it was getting late now after all. He'd been clearing up the kitchen when the doorbell rang, in all honesty it didn't even cross his mind that it might be Erin. He couldn't even remember the last time she'd dropped by his apartment, they'd become too used to just hanging out at her place nowadays. He left the kitchen and headed to the front door, pulling it open only to find Erin stood there on his doorstep. He was so surprised to see her that he didn't even know what to say. "Erin..." he said softly, a small smile on his lips as he looked down at her. Maybe she was finally ready to talk and sort this thing out. Or maybe she'd come to break up with him? Oh god! "It's good to see you... I've been hoping we could talk" he said, he hoped that was why she was here, he needed to apologise to her. "Come in..." he smiled and then stepped to one side so she could pass him. He couldn't help feeling a bit nervous now, it was funny how she had that effect on him sometimes... especially after a big argument.

So much had happened that night that she hadn't been sure where to start when it came to sorting everything out. Her dad had been her main concern since he'd only been visiting for a few days and she didn't want him to leave on bad terms with her. They'd both apologised to each other about it, but that didn't mean she was okay with the way he'd spoken to her and humiliated her in front of Charlie. Still, her dad and family had gone back to Chicago now and she doubted she'd be seeing him for a while. She saw him two or three times a year, it wasn't like she had to face up to him everyday.

It was definitely time she sorted things out with Charlie though, she'd left him hanging for long enough and she was starting to get annoyed by how many text messages he kept leaving her. If it hadn't been obvious, she'd felt like she just needed some space away from him until she'd cleared her head. Though thankfully he hadn't been knocking on her door or trying to interupt her whilst she was working, so that was something she supposed. She just hoped he wouldn't be too surprised when he saw her there at his door... though considering she'd turned up unexpected, she assumed he would be.

Soon enough, the door opened and she was starimg up at him, almost unsure of what to do now she was here. "Yeah... um... that was why I came" she said with a small smile, maybe he had been expecting her after all. "Sorry, I didn't mean to just turn up like this... you're not busy are you?" she asked as she walked past him through to his apartment, well she hoped he wasn't too busy because there was a good chance this could take a while. She turned back to face him once she was inside and then passed him his jacket, "Here... I brought this" she said, "It looks better on you than it does on me" she said with a small laugh, though she soon looked down at the floor, she wasn't sure where she should even start. "So, um, I guess we have some stuff to talk about" she said, glancing back up at him, "Is Basil around?" she asked, looking around as if she expected to find him. She didn't want to have this conversation in front of anyone else, that would just be extremely awkward... especially since she knew how damn emotional she could get sometimes.

He knew it was a bit childish of him to keep sending her messages, but he only wanted to let her know that he was desperate to sort things out. He didn't stop with the daily 'I love you' messages either, even though it probably looked like he was just trying to sweeten her up. He hated it when she wasn't talking to him, he was scared to approach her in case she went crazy or something... but then that was women in general, he'd learnt a long time ago not to cross them when they were in a mood. He figured she would come to him when she was ready, but he couldn't take this much longer, he was desperate to sort things out between them.

In some ways he was glad to see her, though it made him nervous not knowing what was about to come. It was hard to get inside her head sometimes, though he was taking it as a good sign that she hadn't turned up and started shouting at him. She didn't even look like she was in too much of a mood. He smiled at her and shook his head, watching as she walked past him, "No I'm not. And it's fine, you're welcome here anytime you want, you know that" he said with another smile and then closed the door. He followed her through and then took the jacket from him, it had been kind of amusing that she'd walked off with it that night, "Thanks" he said, grinning slightly at her comment, "Well it wasn't exactly designed for tiny people like you" he laughed slightly, well it really had been far too big for her! He headed towards the main living area and left the jacket on the edge of the armchair before turning back to Erin. He ran a hand over his jaw, he knew they had a lot of talking to do, he was just worried where it was all heading. "No, not right now" he shook his head, they had the place to themselves for the moment, which was probably just as well. He stepped forwards slightly so he was closer to her and then without really thinking he took her face in his hands, "Are you okay? I feel horrible, Erin... absolutely horrible" he bit his lip and then took his hands away, only to reach one up again to touch her hair lightly. "It was my fault you fell over, did you really hurt yourself? I've been worried sick all week about you... and... and... I really thought the police were going to turn up and arrest me or something" he blurted out. Okay, so maybe he was blowing this whole thing out of proportion, but he was quite the drama queen sometimes!

He definitely would have made things worse if he'd actually tried to approach her before she was ready to talk. That would have just put her in an even worse mood and she would have ended up shouting at him. Gosh, things were bad enough already, she couldn't face having anything else happen this week. But her intention had just been to stay away from him for a bit so she had some time and space to herself, she had no intention of breaking things off between them... for god's sake, how many times had they already been down that road? She'd like to think they'd grown out of that awful on and off phase by now.

Erin smiled at him as she walked past him, she knew she was always welcome here, he'd always made that clear, but it had been some time since she'd last been here. It just seemed to make sense that they spent most of their time at her place, there was more room and she had Britney there after all. She looked up at him as he made a comment about the jacket, he was certainly right about that one, "No, I guess not" she laughed slightly, watching as he put the jacket on the edge of the chair in the living room. She supposed it was something that Basil wasn't in at the moment, she wouldn't want anyone witnessing this... not if there was any chance that they might have another argument. Though she was hoping that wouldn't be the case and that they could just sort things out. She looked surprised for a moment when he stepped forwards and placed his hands either side of her face, though she realised he was just concerned about her. "Charlie..." she said softly, she could see that she'd worried him, though perhaps he was taking this just a bit too far. Why was she not surprised?! She raised her eyebrows at him, "What?! The police? What on earth made you think that?" she asked, though she couldn't help laughing slightly. Had he seriously been thinking that?! "Charlie, it wasn't your fault I fell over. I was just... shocked that you were shouting at me... and I tripped over... I knew you were right about those damn shoes" she grinned slightly, it really hadn't helped that she'd been wearing heels. "I'm okay though, I promise. Just cuts and bruises... nothing's broken" she said, pushing a strand of hair away from her face as she peered up at him.

It almost felt a little odd to have her round at his place, though it was funny really because it hadn't been long ago that she'd told him she would surprise him one day by turning up. Well he hadn't thought it would be under these circumstances, but he supposed he should be grateful that she was wanting to talk to him. Though he was still feeling a bit nervous, he could never quite tell how things were going to go when they needed to have a serious talk. It usually always ended in tears or harsh words being said. He was going to try and remain as calm as possible, perhaps that way they could get through this being civilised with each other about things.

He felt bad enough for having shouted at her that night, but he felt worse knowing that it might have been his fault that she'd fallen over. And what if she'd really hurt herself? He wouldn't have forgiven himself for that. He wore an expression of pure concern on his face as he looked her her, though he could tell that she was surprised by what he'd just said. Perhaps he really was blowing this out of proportion, but he'd been worrying so much about all of this. "Don't laugh..." he said, still with a serious look on his face. He didn't know why she was laughing about it! "I shouted at you and... and I grabbed your arm" he bit his lip, he still felt like he'd gone about things totally wrong, but he'd just been trying to get her to come into the car. "You looked so shocked when I did it... that's why I thought you were going to call the police" he pulled at a strand of his hair almost nervously. He was totally worrying about nothing, he could see that now. "Well... maybe your shoes didn't help, but it all happened so fast... I just feel like it was all my fault. I'm so sorry" he said, his voice weakening slightly as he apologised. "I'm glad you didn't hurt yourself too much though. I heard you hit the ground and I really thought you'd broken something" he made a slight face, it had been horrible to watch but the main thing now was that she was alright. Perhaps it was time to just change the subject. "So um... I guess your dad hates me now?" he asked, what a mess all of this was, he'd never meant to get on the wrong side of him.

It hadn't quite dawned on her just how worried he'd clearly been over this. She probably wouldn't have fallen over if he hadn't shouted at her and started being possessive, but it wasn't like she was about to point the finger at him. She didn't think it was his fault, in fact she really only had herself to blame for what had happened; she shouldn't have been so damn stubborn and should have gotten in the car when he'd told her to. But it was too late to change anything now, and besides things could be much worse, she really could have broken something and then ended up in hospital. Looking up at Charlie right now she couldn't quite tell if he was being serious or not, on one hand she couldn't believe he would think such a thing but then on the other hand she knew this was the sort of thing he would get worked up about. "Charlie! I can't believe you would think that!" she said, sighing slightly as she paused for a moment. "You grabbed my arm... yes... but it's hardly a case for domestic violence!" she couldn't help but laugh slightly, "It's not like you pushed me. Besides, I can see now that you were just worried about me... I must have been crazy thinking I could walk home by myself in the dark" she shuddered slightly at the thought of it, there really could have been anyone around. "But... you didn't have to act so possessive of me, I'm not a child" she shrugged, she felt the need to keep pointing that one out.

She didn't feel the need to discuss that accident anymore, the main thing was that she was okay, there was no real harm done. Thankfully Charlie seemed to read her mind and changed the subject. She didn't really want to be talking about anyone of this, but she had to. She sighed slightly and shook her head, "He doesn't hate you, Charlie" she said softly, "I think he was just shocked at how much you were defending me... I don't think he expected that" she shrugged, but then she'd never had anyone stand up for her in front of him before, it was no wonder he hadn't seen it coming. "He did apologise to me about it. Though it doesn't mean he'll change. I was just upset that he did that to me in front of you... I've never been so embarassed in my life" she bit her lip and glanced down towards the floor. "I know I didn't show it, but I really am grateful for what you did for me... I guess I was shocked too, I've never had someone stick up for me in front of my dad before. It's not all fun and games being an only child" she said, rolling her eyes slightly as she looked back up at him.

Oh yes, he was being quite serious. Perhaps he was exaggerating a bit about expecting the police to turn up and arrest him, but he had genuinely thought that she was really mad at him about it. She would have had every reason to be annoyed at him, he knew what he'd done had been uncalled for even if she seemed to be okay about it. "I suppose not" he said, though she was right, had he pushed her then things would be completely different. He would never have done something like that though, he had far too much respect for Erin and for women in general. He'd snapped at her and maybe been a bit rougher than he should have, but things could have been a lot worse. Thank god he wasn't that kind of guy. "Mhmm... a bit crazy! I know you wanted to get away from me... but I would never have let you walk home by yourself at that time of night" he shrugged, surely any other decent man would have done the same thing by trying to stop her. "I was still a bit rough with you though, I feel awful for that" he made a slight face as he recalled what had happened. He looked at her again, not at all surprised that she was accusing him of being possessive... it wasn't the first time he'd acted like that around her. "I know. I'm sorry" he said softly, he wished he could promise he wouldn't act that way again, but he knew what he was like sometimes. "I was worried about you... I just... went about things the wrong way" he said, it was too late to change what had happened now though, all he could do was apologise.

Charlie had no idea if she was just saying that or not, he wouldn't have been surprised if her dad really did have something against him now. "Well, like I said, I wasn't going to just sit there and let him talk to you like that... not when I could see how upset he was making you" he said, sighing slightly. "I can't believe he did that in front of me either" he said, he hadn't been expecting anything like that to happen at all. "I feel rude for ruining that whole night though... I think I should apologise to him... on the phone, if you'll let me" he bit his lip, he was fully expecting her to tell him not to, but he wanted to set the record straight and make sure there were no bad feelings there. For god's sake, this man was probably going to be his future father-in-law someday, there was no way he wanted to be on the wrong side of him. He smiled at Erin, he was pleasantly surprised that she didn't even seem to be too mad at him. He'd realised now that it was clearly always best to just let her have some space after a big argument, it did the world of good. "I would always defend you, Erin. I just did what I thought was right, even if you didn't want me to at the time" he said, he knew he'd probably embarassed her as well, but what choice had he had? He motioned towards the couch and reached for her hand, he didn't know why they were still standing up. "Are we okay?" he asked, still worried that she might find something to have a go at him about. "I thought you'd come round to break up with me or something" he said with a nervous laugh as he sat down on the couch and looked over at her.

Of course she could see now how stupid she'd been trying to walk home, but she'd been so angry with him at the time that she just hadn't cared. If anything she should have been thankful for how protective he'd been of her, it was the kind of thing than decent guys did, making sure their girl got back home safely at night. "Well you were right, anything could have happened to me" she shrugged, she would have been worried about someone jumping out of the bushes and attacking her. She didn't even want to think about it. Erin sighed slightly as she looked up at him, "Charlie, just let it go... I'm not angry with you about it" she said, there was no point them going on about it, there had been no real harm done and he'd really only been looking out for her.

Talking about this now just made her feel all embarassed about it again, she still couldn't get over the fact that her dad had started lecturing her in front of Charlie. She half wondered if he'd done it deliberately, maybe he just didn't want to see her happy or something. Glancing up at Charlie, she looked somewhat surprised as he suggested apologising to her father over the phone. She almost gave him a straight 'no', but hesitated slightly so she could think about it. "Uh... I guess. If it makes you feel better" she said softly, though she wasn't sure if it was a particularly good idea or not. "It wasn't you that ruined the evening. I think Emma was upset that we'd left though, Dad told her I wasn't feeling well so you took me home" she said, though she'd seen her stepsister the next day anyway. She smiled, suddenly quite glad that this was all going much better than she'd thought it would. She took his hand and nodded her head, "Of course we're okay. I've said it before and I'll say it again, any man that fights for me is certainly worth holding on to" she grinned, squeezing his hand as she went to sit down on the couch beside him, her hand still in his. "What?! Oh god, no!" she laughed slightly, wow he really was being a bit over dramatic tonight! "Why on earth would I want to break up with you? I'm so over that whole on and off thing" she said with a small sigh. She let go of his hand for a moment so she could take her shoes off, "Sorry, just making myself comfortable" she grinned slightly before she curled up beside him, taking his hand again. "Anyway, I wanted to apologise for shouting at you... and bringing up that thing again... you know... when you called me a two year old" she bit her lip, she guessed she'd just brought it up yet again, but she was really only apologising for it! It hadn't been fair to throw that in his face again.

It was quite a relief that she wasn't mad at him about it, though knowing what she was like she would probably bring it up next time they had an argument. There were some things that she never seemed to let him forget about. Maybe he would just let this go though, there was no point on dwelling on things, not when she was perfectly fine now. He still felt like things were a bit of a mess though, hence why he felt he should apologise to her father and put things right once and for all. "Well... it'll make things less awkward next time I have to see him" he said, at least they could just put this behind them now and move on. Or so he hoped, for all he knew he could end up in another argument with him on the phone. Another thing he felt bad about was walking out on the rest of her family when neither of them had done anything wrong. He nodded his head at Erin, "I would have liked to say bye to Emma... she's a funny little thing... never a dull moment when she's around" he laughed, the small girl was clearly full of energy, she'd kept him amused anyway.

Charlie smiled when she took his hand, he totally felt like he could relax a bit more now that she hadn't come here to shout at him. "Well that's because you're worth it. You're one in a million" he grinned, squeezing her hand back as they made it onto the couch. He had to laugh slightly at her reaction to him worrying about her coming here to break up with him... well he'd clearly got that wrong. "Yeah, well... I'd like to think we're past that stage now" he laughed slightly, what was even the point in being on and off with each other when they always got back together in the end anyway? "Oh, go ahead" he laughed again as she went to take off her shoes, he had no problem with her cosying up to him. He entwined his fingers with hers once she was settled again and looked at her, this time he wasn't laughing, "I feel like that keeps coming back to haunt me" he sighed slightly, he really wished she could let that one go but he had a feeling it was just stuck in her mind now. He hesitated for a few moments and looked down at their joined hands, there was a subject he wanted to approach but didn't know how to really go about it... he wasn't sure if she was ready to talk about it or not. "So um, has your dad always been like that?" he asked, looking curious as he peered at her. She didn't have to give him too much of an answer if she didn't want to, he'd started to wonder if she would ever really open up to him.

She guessed she was just going to have to let Charlie apologise to her father, even if she still felt a bit awkward about them both having a conversation about her. Just as long as they didn't start arguing again then she supposed it would be alright, she did want them to be able to get along after all. Erin smiled and nodded her head at him as he mentioned her stepsister, "Yes, she's a little chatterbox... and has so much energy" she laughed slightly, though most small children seemed to be like that, it was no wonder they scared her a bit. "Next time I speak to her on Skype you'll have to join me... it might be funny" she grinned, Skype chats were always amusing, it would be even more fun if she actually had someone to join her on her end.

It really was hard to stay mad at this man for very long, he just made it too difficult for her especially when he went and said the sweetest things like that. She couldn't help but flash him a smile after that comment, what girl wouldn't want to hear nice things like that? She was also glad that they were reading off the same page and decided that their 'on and off' days should be left in the past. "We are. You're stuck with me for good I'm afraid" she laughed slightly, well you never knew what was around the corner unfortunately but she was positive that what they had going was a good thing and definitely worth holding on to. Once she was settled beside him, she too looked down at their joined hands and then tucked a strand of her hair behind her hair. "I don't mean to keep bringing it up... I really don't" she bit her lip, "You know what's it like when we argue... we say stuff we don't mean. I'm sorry... it really should just stay in the past now" she said quietly, she was going to have to try her best not to bring it up again, it really wasn't fair on him. She let things go quiet for a few moments but then shifted slightly as her brought up the subject of her dad again... she realised she was going to have to talk now. She sighed slightly and nodded her head slowly, "Pretty much, yes" she said, hesitating for a moment. "He's always made me feel like I'm bit of a disappointment to him... he was never one of those really encouraging dads" she shrugged, though she couldn't look at Charlie because she knew she'd tear up. It was a struggle to talk about it, but maybe she would try her best this time... she owed him that. "Most of the time he doesn't seem to care what I do, but when he does he sure likes to put me down and make me feel like crap" she rolled her eyes, she figured Charlie knew all this but at least it was a starting point.

Even just watching small children seemed to tire him out! Honestly, he had no idea how people coped when they had kids, weren't they just permanently tired from running around after them all day? He wasn't sure he had the energy for that! He grinned at Erin, that sounded like a good idea to him, "Well if it's anything like the Skype conversations I have with my two year old niece, it should be pretty amusing" he laughed, though it was insanely hard to get much out of a two year old... usually he just ended up talking to his sister instead, but it was still a lot of fun. It was also nice that he could talk to them in that way even though they were in a different country.

Being stuck with her didn't exactly sound like a bad thing, it was what he wanted after all! He'd fought so hard for their relationship to work, he wasn't about to give up now, not when they'd come all this way. "Hey, don't say that like it's a bad thing!" he laughed at her, hey might have times where they annoyed each other and had full on arguments, but the good always outweighed the bad stuff. And that was the way it should be. He looked at her, still keeping his hand locked over hers, maybe he'd just have to take her word for it when she said it should just stay in the past, though he was pretty sure she'd said that before. Still, she'd apologised and for now he would leave it there. "It should... yes" he smiled, deciding not to say anything else on the matter. Though he wondered if changing the subject back to her dad had been a good idea... he felt her shifting slightly which gave him the impression that she was umcomfortable talking about it. Well he knew that was probably the case, she'd never been forthcoming when it came to opening up. But she did talk, much to his surprise. He could only sit there and listen, knowing that this had to be hard for her, but she was doing well so far... even if this was nothing he didn't know already. "I'm sorry, honey. I can totally see how it makes you feel like you've done something wrong. He shouldn't treat you like that" he said with a sigh, he nearly added that she shouldn't let him treat her like that either, but she'd probably only shout at him for it. "We don't have to talk about this if you don't want to. I know you'd probably rather not" he said, giving her hand another small squeeze. If she wanted to really talk to him and open up then he'd let her do it in her own time, he really didn't want to have to push her into doing it if she still wasn't ready.

Erin laughed at his comment, she could really only imagine what talking to his little niece over Skype had to be like. At least she could actually have proper conversations with Emma, she was six now after all and really was such a chatterbox. Erin wondered if she would always be like, even at the age of six she seemed to have so much confidence and didn't seem to be afraid of much. Gosh, why couldn't she have been like that? It was no wonder her dad seemed to have taken a shine to her, she was everything that Erin wasn't. It was sad really, but that was the way that she saw things.

She smiled at Charlie and gave a small laugh, "It's not a bad thing! I just don't know how you put up with me sometimes!" she said, she really had no idea. But she knew that he loved her and would literally do anything for her so she clearly had to be worth it somehow. He wouldn't have kept fighting for her if that wasn't the case, so that had to mean something. She looked down at the floor for a moment, the subject of her dad had come up and she knew that this time she really shouldn't try to change the subject. "No, he shouldn't. But he does it anyway", she shrugged her shoulders and gave a small sigh. It was time that she she talked about this now, maybe it really would make her feel better. She would try her best, that was all she could do.

"No, I want to. I need to" she said, not letting go of his hand because she wanted the comfort and the support. This wouldn't be easy but it really was time that she opened up to him, she didn't want him to feel uncomfortable about asking her certain things anymore. They were in a serious relationship, if there was anyone she could talk to then it was him. But where on earth did she start? She stayed quiet for a moment whilst she thought to herself, figuring out that perhaps it was best to start at the very beginning. It would be easier that way. "My parents never planned to have a child. I was an accident. Don't even think I was a happy one" she shrugged, pausing for a moment before she felt ready to carry on. ""My mom had post natal depression when I was born. I know it wasn't her fault and she never knew that was going to happen, but I never had that bond with her for the first few months" she bit her lip, she didn't want to hesitate for too long in case she suddenly broke down and couldn't go any further. "I don't think my dad was all that happy about having to give up work for a while to look after me. I don't suppose it was easy him having to bring up a newborn baby... but my mom wouldn't have really been up to it. All babies want their mother's though don't they? I must have screamed the place down, I bet he hated it" she made a face and then looked down at the floor, she was amazed that she'd managed to get this far. It was starting to get tough now though because she realised she didn't know where to go from here. She took a deep breath though she could feel her lip starting to wobble, "My mom got better though and... and I guess things got easier but... but... I wrecked their marriage. I know I did" she said with a strained voice, closing her eyes shut as she felt the first tear slide down her cheek. This was hard, just like she'd thought it would be, but she'd started now and was determined to go further.

Could it be that she really was ready to open up to him? Two and half of years he'd waited for this, he'd tried to encourage her before but she always ended up hiding herself away again and changing the subject so she didn't have to talk about anything family related. It worried him a bit but he didn't want to have to keep pushing her. The fact that she'd come to him was a good sign, maybe she'd finally realised that talking might actually do her some good. It wasn't like he was going to judge her over anything or laugh, he just wanted to be there for her and give her whatever support and encouragement she needed. So he stayed quiet and let her speak, watching her as she began to talk. It amazed him really that he'd never known any of this stuff. How was that right? They'd been together so long... well, if you forgot about the stupid breaks they'd taken, but still, he felt like there was still so much he didn't know about her. No wonder she'd felt like he wouldn't understand, things couldn't have been different for him growing up. As the first born child of three and the only boy, he'd clearly been adored. That wasn't to say that Erin hadn't been either, it was just that things had clearly been difficult. He let her carry on though, he'd waited so long for her to talk that he didn't want to interrupt her. "I think most men would struggle with that... gosh, hand us a baby and the majority of us wouldn't have a clue" he said, he wasn't tying to be funny, he just felt that it had to be hard for men that tried to bring up a baby by themselves. It was odd really, he'd have thought that Erin would have grown up to a be a right daddy's girl - clearly that wasn't the case. "I can't believe I didn't know about any of this" he said quietly, he was glad she finally felt she could open up about it all.

Glancing down at her he could see that she'd perhaps come to a point where she was starting to struggle. He frowned slightly as she spoke again and then he turned slightly and reached out his free hand to wipe her tear away... he could only imagine how difficult this had to be for her. "Sweetheart, why would you think that?" he asked softly, "All families struggle. And just because you weren't planned doesn't mean that you're not loved!" he said with a smile, he refused to believe that, how could you not love Erin? "Don't cry, you're doing so well!" he tried to sound enthusiastic and gave her cheek a little poke as if he were trying to make her laugh. Truth was, this was as hard for him as it was for her... it was heartbreaking to see the person you loved struggling so much. He hated to think how hard things might have been for her, it made him realise just how lucky he'd been growing up.

Erin did wonder how frustrating all this had to be for Charlie. He'd clearly wanted her to open up to him for a long time but she hadn't been willing enough to. Well the time had come now and she felt he should know things about her that she didn't really tell anyone else about. There shouldn't have to be secrets anymore! Gosh, she was quite sure that she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him, it was just as well she got things out in the open now rather than further down the line. She wasn't even sure why she'd been so worried about talking to him about all this stuff anyway, he seemed so happy to listen to her and was full of positive encouragement. "I guess so" she nodded her head, though some people were just naturals she supposed, and her dad clearly hadn't been. "My grandparents had to help out a lot though" she said, maybe that was why she'd ended up being quite close to her gran, she felt like she was the only family member on her side sometimes. She glanced up at Charlie and hesitated for a moment, "I know. I guess I should have told you about this a long time ago... I just... you know me... I hate talking about this kind of stuff" she shrugged, he must have figured that out right from the very beginning. Talking about family had never been an easy subject. Though come to think of it, she just didn't like talking about herself in general much either.

The more she talked, the more emotional she found herself getting - but that was no surprise, she'd known that this would happen. She just wanted to burst into tears when he reached over to wipe her tear away, but she took a deep breath and tried to compose herself again. She could do this, sometimes she was stronger than she thought she was, she just had to really put her mind to it. She didn't say anything until he'd stopped talking, though she managed a small smile, even if she did just want to break down in tears. She sighed slightly, "I don't know... I guess I was just always made to feel like I was in the way. All the time" she shrugged, glancing down at the floor, "I don't really remember a time where we were actually a happy family. Maybe on vacations... but... aside from that, they always argued. I think they would have been happier if they'd never had me" her voice was slightly strained at this point, "I guess it wasn't much fun growing up feeling like a waste of space... it kind of stays with you" she said quietly, tears sliding down her cheek but she stayed quiet all the same.
