Just out of curiosity. What are your favorite varieties? bands, groups, songs?

Me? I like a range from rock/metal too clasical. Nightwish is an example of those. I also love a bunch of game soundtracks, like Ace combat, Final Fantasy etc. My top favroite bands would be Nightwish, Rammstein, Mnemic...

I'll listen to just about anything as long as I like how it sounds. This often but not always excludes rap.

But things I regularly listen to: Reggae, rock, and ska.

I listen to a lot of foreign music (German, Japanese, Korean, and a few Latin songs) so I've learned to listen to songs based mostly for the music itself and not the lyrics. I generally like upbeat songs however.

Flight of the Conchords, Jonathan Coulton, Aerosmith, Queen, the Beatles, and Old Weezer (not the newer songs), Jimi Hendrix...and some of Megadeth...felt this really didn't fit in with my other bands of choice.

I like to keep my ears open for new bands though and am willing to take suggestions.

The human voice is my least favorite musical instrument, so I tend to listen to instrumental music most of the time. As for genres, my tastes also vary: from Vivaldi to Nightwish, from John Williams to Vanessa-Mae.

((I am deeply in love with music))
I've found I like a little of everything except rap, techno, and country. In particular I enjoy light to medium rock. The lightest I enjoy is John Mayer, and the heaviest is about Lost Prophets level.

There are a could soundtracks I like, Brawl's remixes, Red Alert, FLCL, TWEWY; but I don't dive into that market often.

My favorite bands, Matchbox 20, Carbon leaf, Smash Mouth; in that order.

You can take can my word for it... or you can find out yourself.

I am distinctively a cheapass when it comes to music. While I keep from out and out pirating, I do listen to a lot of game remixes--partly because of the familiarity, mostly because they're free and often awesome.

I recently sorted out my music into a few very long playlists by a few characteristics. I've got a lot of grand scale stuff (playlist designated "Behemoth") like New World Symphony, some (well, most) of the music from Skies of Arcadia or some of the Chrono Trigger stuff on OCR. Also got plenty of upbeat (playlist name escaping me at the moment), like the Zelda Shop Remix or Tropical Mario. Some moderately intense stuff ("Rapid Fire"), like basically anything done by Beatdrop and a lot of the Megaman remixes. Then there's the slower-paced relaxing stuff ("Spelunking", mostly because of the echo synths, I think), like Tabla Beat Science or some cool jazz. Plenty of overlap between the four.

On the topic of Smash Mouth, though, I've got Astrolounge. Might be the only disk I actually personally bought. Although, it might have been my little brother who actually bought it. He and my dad do that a lot more than I do.

If you're looking for good adventuring music, I'd recommend The Rough Guide to the Music of Scandinavia. Adventuring music is a whole classification that I think could get some more use. I get some bizarre stuff secondhand from my dad, like a CD of Japanese yodeling (terrible) or Southern Culture on the Skids (excellent guitar work, ridiculous vocals), but a lot of it is solid.

John Williams is the man.

This thread allows for a number of cool short replies like:

Anything except Bach.

or
QUOTE
Es gibt nur einen Gott: Belafarinrod.

But I shall also try to keep my contributions qualitative so here goes:

The type of music I listen to very heavily depends on my mood. When it comes to classical Liszt, Debussy and Rachmaninoff really get my endorphin flowing. But I mostly dislike Bach.

The rest is mostly rock or its spin-offs, mostly punk-rock. Not in order of liking, but some of the most listened to include: Electric Six, Die Ärzte, Farin Urlaub, Liquido, Wir Sind Helden, Franz Ferdinand, Cake.

I also sometimes venture into the grounds of Fatboy Slim, Smash Mouth, Tokyo Jihen, Gorillaz, Frank Sinatra, Robbie Williams, The Baseballs, Bright Eyes, U2, Max Raabe, etc. etc. I've also got a bunch of soundtracks I occasionally listen to, but if dwelled to much on the occasional the list would get toooooooo long.

My status as a music Geek is cemented! While I disliked marching band, I found Wikipedia's article on "Rock band's cultural impact" too interesting not to read.

Also, thanks to Masterly, because he introduced me to Grooveshark.

P.S. I'm totally not a spam bot in disguise. ninja.gif Totally.

I'll give most things a try, save techno and rap. Some of my favorite bands are Sonata Arctica, Thrice, Protomen and Vincent Black Shadow.

I do like video game music, but I can only listen to it on it's own if it's a new cover of an old tune or a fairly recent game with actual instrumentation.

This isn't Latin chanting! This isn't Latin chanting at all!

Which isn't to say it isn't good, but it certainly didn't match my naming convention expectations.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I was confused for a moment at first too.

"Gegorian" refers to the chanting; it's not language specific, but not too many people other than The Church have really held enough interest to maintain it.

Well... There's also the Greybeards.
