Title: Slime Abilities
Description: Speculations on Mei

Bri - March 13, 2010 04:11 AM (GMT)
I probably should have put up a thread like this since Mei is part of the party (at least for now).

So, what kind of abilities can you see a slime displaying?

We already know there is a Slime Strike (sharpens herself into a point), and a duplication effect for fast travel. And I think there was an istance of Slime Shield as well.

HaloKirby9 - March 13, 2010 04:24 AM (GMT)
She could make herself bigger? To... scare stuff? My idea well has dried up for now. =P

Bri - March 13, 2010 04:30 AM (GMT)
Nothing wrong with that idea.

And after seeing your picture request in an earlier thread, I could even see Mei lobbing pieces of herself at an enemy to encase him and devour them from within...

Masterly - March 13, 2010 04:40 AM (GMT)
Bridge form. Ladder form.

A BoyMystic and hisher Blob.

Yeah, I think there was too.

Erm... I got nothing as far as slime moves go. :(

Bri - March 13, 2010 04:46 AM (GMT)
A classic game Masterly. Though rootbeer jelly beans may be a tad hard to find ;)

Masterly - March 13, 2010 05:03 AM (GMT)
I was always partial to licorice.

Pinky - March 13, 2010 06:18 AM (GMT)
Maybe she could serve as lotion.

Now with radiation shielding SPF 9000! :D

Sildraug - March 13, 2010 02:32 PM (GMT)
In combination with your avatar and sig image, that's probably one of the creepiest things you could have said, Pinky.

As for slime abilities--I think we had several 'Mei morphs into a weapon that X other character uses' in the Team Techs thread.

Lotion form? :D

Of course, it would be best with AlleteXLily ;)

Of course, that does beg the question whether Mei will reproduce via mitosis, or whether she needs to settle down with a nice, boy slime.

*tries to scrub her brain from the image of a Mei waterbed*

Er, guess it would be a slimebed.

Mei's new ability is to stop Allete from making any decisions.

Bri - March 18, 2010 04:11 AM (GMT)
Ugh, I know my brain is shot. Rereading the bit of Mei turning into a ladder, or such, all I could think of is:

Mei-Pole (Maypole)

At least that is better than when the slime goes on a rampage: Mei-hem.

Although, if Mei does reproduce via mitosis, Allete could get rich selling them as pets. She could even call them Mini-Mei's...

Mei connects herself to three allies and starts pulling herself back.

She then let's go of P3 and then P1 and P2 to propel herself at the enemy while turning her arms into blades.

Mei cuts her enemy into pieces and celebrates.

HaloKirby9 - August 3, 2010 03:35 PM (GMT)
Could Mei engulf an enemy and then do a bunch a Slime Lances inward?

Bri - August 3, 2010 09:43 PM (GMT)
I don't see why she couldn't. She's already demonstrated she can harden and soften extensions of herself...

"And now ladies and gentlemen, if you want that classic hourglass figure, come try the brand new Proto-Plastic Surgery..."

Milo - August 4, 2010 05:57 AM (GMT)
Actually, what I would do is lance an enemy, then extend a bunch of additional spikes from the part of the lance that's inside the enemy. Nasty.

I don't think she's large enough to completely engulf an enemy, but slime monsters are notoriously unpleasant to grapple with. Even cute slime monsters. She could still slice inward from where she's latching on to the enemy, or crawl over an enemy looking for holes in armor she can seep through, or just generally be hard to shake off.

Mei-hem is definitely an awesome wordplay but I think making that a move doesn't do justice to her slime background. I mean, "Mei" is just the name Allete gave her, right? So it'd be strange for her to use a move based on her 'nickname', unless of course Allete is the one commanding her.

Anyway, I don't think a small slime should be able to disembowel its opponents, XD
Imo, it doesn't fit her Happy/Bouncy nature! I think more comedic moves, like the ability to swallow her opponents and trap them in her gel, suit her more.

I actually love Mei and think she should be more involved! SLIMES ARE AWESOME.

Also, as a side-note: Don't you think more Ferals should be introduced to the story? Or is it too soon for that?

What do you guys think?

HaloKirby9 - November 13, 2010 05:09 PM (GMT)
I think that everything should be able to disembowel everything else in the comic.

Eh, I'm iffy about introducing more characters who can't speak to the comic.

Makes dialog a bit... difficult. Youknow?

Fuuyu - November 13, 2010 05:20 PM (GMT)
True dat.

But maybe Ferals could have their own language and dialog could be shown in a different color, indicating that the Ferals are communicating.

And I remember somewhere, either Frey or Allete mentioned English-speaking Ferals.

lol, Feral Anglophones; epic.

Well, it wouldn't be a racial ability obviously, but it's not like Allete goes around beating people up with "Mystic Punch!" and "Mystic Stare!". Mei can develop personal techniques that set her apart from other slimes.

And I think "nickname" is unfair. There's no indication that Mei had any kind of name until Allete met her, especially a verbal name, since slimes can't talk and all. Making a move based on the name Allete gave her would show that she's fully embraced her role in Allete's party and now considers this her true identity.

QUOTE (Fuuyu @ Nov 13 2010, 05:50 PM)

...which she is.

She probably will be when we return to Allete's story. (Contingent on the community's votes, of course.) She definitely showed what she's worth in the leviacrab battle

Of course, she isn't exactly about to show up to help Frey and Fennecia on the train.

Well, it's not like Allete is on a mission to Gotta Catch 'Em All!. More characters - ferals and otherwise - would definitely be fun, but only if there's real substance to them.

QUOTE (Vuanaunt @ Nov 13 2010, 06:12 PM)

Yeah, me too. But not all ferals are necessarily mute. That could be just some species like slimes, or it could be uniquely Mei, or it could be that they can develop the ability to speak as they grow older.

QUOTE (Fuuyu @ Nov 13 2010, 06:20 PM)

Still limiting unless there's someone who speaks both languages capable of translating. Even then, it'd get tedious if it was more than a one-scene affair.

We don't know if Mei has ever actually met another feral. We found her alone, and ferals seem to be rare in Veil. Do ferals even take care of their young?

Masterly - November 13, 2010 05:38 PM (GMT)
It would be nice to see a few more Ferals, but I don't think any should join the party.

HaloKirby9 - November 13, 2010 05:46 PM (GMT)
Ferals could talk in symbols?

Fuuyu - November 13, 2010 06:00 PM (GMT)
Actually, I'd have to say, Mei is a very autonomous fighter. In the first few displays of her abilities, she wasn't under the direct command of anyone in fact. Although I agree that Allete is her new guardian/commander, I guess.

By more involved, I meant a side-quest or something later in the story which entails her background and other important things about Ferals and slimes.

Although there isn't any signification of her actual name (if she indeed, bore one before), if someone you couldn't communicate with picked you up, named you and thrust you into, would you start using attacks based on your given name? I think she should stick to using "slime" abilities and the such. I was speaking explicitly of "innate abilities" not ones she could develop through her experiences with Allete.
Maybe in an attack in which both are involved, it could be called "Mei-hem"! :D

I understand that the story isn't a Pokemon game, but why introduce the concept of a Feral and not include them at all? I'm not saying Kristof isn't doing an excellent job at piecing things together, I'm simply suggesting that Ferals should have a larger part in the story, later.

Thanks for replying though Milo, I love these intense debates. xD

Well, Allete didn't know what her abilities were. It's not like Mei refused any of the things Allete did ask her to do - she trusts Allete's leadership when she's actually giving any commands to follow.

Not if you resented being taken away like this, no. But we've seen a lot of indication that Mei is quite enthusiastic about being in Allete's party.

Also: if my given name supported sufficiently cool-sounding puns, I'd probably use them too.

Well, I don't really see her as having innate abilities as such. Her innate ability is shapeshifting, but she needs to develop her own techniques for how to manipulate her shape to good effect, much like being born with hands doesn't mean you instinctively know how to perform a karate chop - although it certainly makes you more competent in a fight than someone who wasn't born with hands (all else being equal).

I can certainly picture different slimes going different routes with their powers. (Although one of the main benefits of shapeshifting is versatility, which evens things out a little.)

That would be quite unsavory, wouldn't it. I'm not planning on it any time soon.

As for Mei's autonomy, the reader was given a chance to affect that on this page. Praising would increase Mei's likeliness to do things without instructions and scolding would decrease. People chose the "whatever" option, so nothing changed.
