So a while ago, there was this webcomic called Geek World: The Project!
It was the successor to Get With The Program on gwtp.net, a fairly epic tale stemming from a group of office-bound characters and a living Linux penguin called Flux. Unfortunately, the series kinda dropped off between 2006 and 2007, though the site and it's archives are still around and the main page still gets the occasional update, but it's mostly just flash games and stuff. So, in the (long approaching) wake of that awesome webcomic, I have a thought experiment for everyone. See, in Geek World, the story surrounded a group of people brought together onto a farm somewhere in Iowa as a kind of geek seclusion, a place for them to geek out to their heart's contents under the watchful eye of Binor, who has delusions of grandeur and intends to one day colonise a planet for the Geek World project. So! Since Geek World is now over 3 years old, technology and pop culture (The defining characteristics of geekitude) have changed a lot. So my question for you all is: How would you make Geek World? What rooms would it have, what would you put in them, and how would you manage it all? Would it be self-sufficient or have exports? What kind of people would you invite and what rules would they need to follow? |

Guess I'll get the ball rolling in my usual verbose style:
Location: Tees Valley rural Campus: Living accomodations, power plant, main community centre, farm district
Organisation - Residential staffing positions for the farm and power areas, other residents able to pursue approved projects both for communal and global geek benefit (Such as optimising the local network system or minimising portable technologies). Heads of each department (3 a piece) form a governing council that decides how everything is run, no department head can be operational in more than one department to prevent power grabbing and conflicts of interest, though a majority vote can shift a department head from power and instate another department resident in their place. Exile and addition must be discussed at weekly council meetings. Exports/Imports - Predominantly self-sufficient. Services on campus are free for residents, but a small fee for visitors is required on entry, though the bulk of the site income would be from underground storage spaces to let. Not sure what kind of people I'd let in, but obviously entry would be strictly monitored given the high value of many aspects of the campus. |
