MARY-SUE
Who is "Mary Sue"? It does not take EVERY item combined to make a character 'Mary Sue'. Even just one or two could cause a character to dangerously teeter the line. An example of Mary Sue is someone who would make their character almost exactly the same as Anita Blake from Laurell K. Hamilton's series, or Van Hellsing. -Or sometimes she's the sarcastic, sexy, cunning and skilled dueler who's not quite as social as the others, but manages to win people over with her sarcastic quips and dislike for the protagonist. - Everyone likes Mary Sue, because Mary Sue is good at everything. Mary Sue is a brilliant sorceress, a helpful friend, a good leader, and is stunningly beautiful. She creates her own spells, can defeat any enemy, you name it. -By the end of the story, Mary Sue will be locking lips with the author's desired character, will have left amid cheers from all the regulars, or will be dead, usually accompanied by heavy mourning from the cast. The reader, on the other hand, will be celebrating. -Mary Sue's twin , Gary Stu, can often be identified by his brooding, solitary behaviour, matched by his maverick disregard for authority. -Mary Sue is defined as the 'perfect' character, whether it is happy and cheerful, or depressed and moody. |
