It is important to remember that there are no towns on the island of Novaya Sibir. The Reykholt Outpost is not a town. It contains no streets, no hotels or stores, or any houses. Newcomers to the island usually post tents nearby for their first few nights on the island, before heading off in whatever direction they need to. The Reykholt has a semi-maintained airstrip where small planes come and go, dropping off people and supplies. Dealers and outfitters arrive ocassionally at certain intervals with large quantities of supplies that they sell out of the main building before they pack up and move on with the next flight out. Tents, camping gear, food, sledding supplies, equipment for dogs, and various other survival orientated items are available from them. Inside the main building their are lockers available for people to temporarily store their gear; this does not guarantee against it being stolen though. In the back of this main building is the dog kennel. Dogs come in on planes and are sold to the kennel manager, who in turn sells them to anyone requiring dogs to travel across the island. Most dogs have some training in sledding, but some do not. Some dogs may come from breeders and trainers; others have been stolen from private homes or shelters of some sort and sold illegally to the kennel. There is a hangar on the edge of the airstrip, just incase any of the planes are downed or need repair while on the island, along with a refueling station for the flight back. Adjacent to the hangar is a large storage building -- which is sometimes completely empty, and sometimes full of supplies. Shipments for researchers with government grants or private funding are dropped off in this storage facility. Only a select few people have keys to this building. If you have any questions about Reykholt or the surrounding area, or are unclear on something, please feel free to PM the Ragnarok Admin account.

CABINS AND HOMES

So.. your character has arrived on Novaya Sibir, and now they need a place to live. Because we are trying to attain a certain level of realism in some aspects -- not everyone is going to be allowed to 'magically' have a cabin or a house. Time and effort goes into making and maintaining a home in real life; and thus, to have a home on Novaya Sibir, you need to put some time and effort into it. Your character's needs for a home will depend on their purpose for being on Novaya Sibir. Researchers who need to be mobile will have no real need for permanent housing, and will instead stay in tents or other forms of collapsible and portable buildings. There is a lack of large amounts of wood on Novaya Sibir, and if you wish to build a log cabin, you should put some time in to having your character chopping down trees and learning some construction. It would, of course, be easy to have your character just hire someone to come in and build them a home. But that requires money. A good deal of money. You would have to factor in transporting the supplies TO the island itself, then from the Reykholt to the proposed building site -- that alone will cost a good deal of money. After that, the labor and 'housing' for workers would need to be paid. Realistically, not everyone will be able to afford to have this done. Researchers with government grants or private funding may be an exception. Consider instead some creative and realistic housing options. A small log cabin could be built with the help of others that are already on the island if you could ICly convince them to give your character a hand. Remember -- there is NO electricity on the island! The Reykholt has electricity from a generator, and that is the only way your home would have electricity as well. There is no plumbing or running water established anywhere. There is no garbage management (garbage would generally be burnt in this situation). So.. can your character have a cabin? Yes, pending Admin approval. Why do we do it this way? To be realistic. To keep EVERYONE from having a plush and comfy home to live in when it would NOT be that way in the real world. Consider finding someone to assist you in building your new home, assess the location and if it is realistically possible, and PM the Admin account to ask for permission. If your character needs someplace to stay and cannot build their own housing according to these rules, consider befriending someone who HAS housing, and seeing if you could 'rent' a room from them.[/dohtml]
