Title: Game Rules

Ragnarok* - November 27, 2011 04:11 PM (GMT)
[dohtml]

Game Rules

RATING. Ragnarok is generally PG13 but has a "Mature" section where swearing, violence, and various other activities are allowed. This does not mean that the game is solely based on those activities; so don't let that scare you away. We simply allow them in a 19+year old section. Anything non-PG13 will be kept to a particular the Mature Content section. That way people who do not wish to see such things do not have too.

REALISM. Ragnarok is a realistic roleplay; and thus we do not allow characters with wings, magic, shape-shifting, or odd markings and/or colors that are not found in nature (NOTE: unless you have a reasonable explanation for such things -- such as your dog character is owned by a little girl who likes to dye a pink stripe down their back, etc. You get the idea. When in doubt, ask the Administration. Things like pink, purple, almost pink, almost purple etc eyes are not acceptable. If you wish to make your character unique, do so with their personality and your writing.
Characters are expected to behave, to an extent, in a realistic manner. Humans can NOT understand the 'words' that are spoken between dogs and wolves or other animals. We strongly encourage a lot of wolf-like behavior within the packs (such as submission, rank challenges, etc), but there is much flexibility to this. Some Alphas will require a lot of IC submission, some won't. This is up to the Alpha of the pack. The same with dog/human interaction; some humans will expect their dogs to behave certain ways, some won't. It is very dependent on the situation. The main thing is that you roleplay your character they way you WANT to, without feeling restricted, while still maintaining a mostly realistic atmosphere.

GOLDEN RULES. Be respectful and exercise tolerance. Racism, agism, sexism, etc are unacceptable here. Due to the sensitive nature and often volatile resulting arguments, politics and religion should not be discussed on this board. Please respect others and their rights to believe what they wish. This means not trying to press one's own beliefs upon another. Treat others the way you wish to be treated.

TECHNOLOGY. The in-game year is 2118, which allows for some creative technology. However, be reasonable. Space ships, light sabres, and cellphones with limitless ranges are unreasonable. Even today the only things running the long far north cargo runs are WWII planes. Contacting the mainland is only possible from the outpost. However, advances in short wave radios could make it possible to call out to other cabins and camps but everyone can hear. Advances in metal work can make lighter sleds. Be creative but don't be ridiculous.

CHALLENGING FOR RANK. This is strongly encouraged! If your character is unhappy with their role within the pack or team, it is natural for them to try to assert their dominance and change that role. Thus, we encourage you to fight for your ranks to both maintain them and advance within them. Alphas can be challenged. Lead dogs can be challenged. Keep in mind that the human owner of the sled team though always decides the pulling positions of the dogs but cannot decide which dog is the most dominant or submissive. Also, if you challenge for a rank within a wolf pack and the Alpha is ICly unhappy with the new order, they can attempt to put everyone back in their place. All this being said, challenges must be discussed and agreed to ooc first.

FIGHTING. Fighting is a very natural part of life on Novaya Sibir, and thus fighting is an important part of the game. Auto hits, auto kills, god-moding, power playing or anything in those categories is not allowed. In other words, don't assume all your character's strikes &/or evasions are successful. Fights should be turn-based and realistic. If you have a dispute over a move or the result of a fight that cannot be resolved between the two players, contact the Administration. Remember, fights must be agreed discussed and agreed to ooc first.

ACTIVITY & POST-LENGTH. We consider our pace of roleplay and posting to be fairly relaxed. You are required to post at least once every two weeks per character. Not so much to ask, is it? If for some reason, you can't post once in those three weeks, post an absence notice or your characters will be removed. Posts should be of decent length, one-lining is not acceptable, but you don't need to write a novel every time. Two small paragraphs (roughly 200 words total) is sufficient, as long as the person and/or people you are roleplaying with are happy with that. Quality is the keyword here.

GRAMMER. Proper grammar is a must. Everyone makes typos, that's ok -- we're not that strict. But excessive misspellings and "chat speak" (ex. using u instead of you, shortening words needlessly, ect) will not be tolerated. We are also aware that everyone has their own 'style' of roleplay, and we're cool with that, but excessive use of words that aren't really words (femora is NOT a word for female, femora is the plural for the word 'femur' which is a bone in your leg) will be grounds for your membership application being denied. We will tolerate the use of some of these words as long as they are used correctly; for example, your legs are not pillars, but they can be LIKE pillars. This is called a simile, when one thing is compared to another, usually using words such as "like" or "as".

NUMBER OF CHARACTERS. You can play as many different characters are you want at Ragnarok and you do not need any special permission. Each character MUST go through the joining process and you are expected to be just as active with each character.

TYPES OF CHARACTERS. Any animal that could have arrived in some realistic way on Novaya Sibir is welcome to be roleplayed. The main three groups the game focuses on though are wolves, sled-dogs, and humans. Your character does NOT have to be part of a pack or dog team. You may be a lone wolf, or a lone dog. Human characters can come from all walks of life and can be researchers, hunters, criminals, dog-traders, or whatever you wish.

CHARACTER ARRIVAL. Characters can arrive on the island in a variety of ways depending on the season and weather. The ice bridge is the most common crossing point for animals. Swimming is not an option. Wolves and occasionally various other species are trapped and transported via humans to the island and then released for study. Humans arrive on the island either by dog-sled across the ice bridge, or via ship, plane/helicopter, or whatever form of transport suits them. Note that the ice bridge is not a constant and not even an annual occurrence. In the current game it has been five years since the last ice bridge.

TRANSPORTATION. Once on the island, forms of transportation for human characters are limited. Your choices are essentially dog-sled or snowmobile. Dog-sled is the most common and reliable considering the conditions of the land. Heavy-duty trucks and similar vehicles can be used in certain areas. Keep in mind though that your character must have a way to GET these vehicles onto the island; meaning the money AND the transportation means to get them there.

PASSAGE OF TIME. The in-game year is 2118, but the seasons are always synchronized with what is going on in the real world. If it is Winter in real life at the time you join, then it is Winter in the game. The passage of time also synchronizes with real life. Meaning if your canine character is pregnant, the pregnancy should be carried out in real time. This means no 'fast forwarding' or breeding one day, having pups the next day type things. Fluid time is practiced here which means that you may have more than one thread at a time with your character.

POST MARKING. The following post markers are optional, for you to use if you wish.

[ p ] -- Private thread.
[ aw ] --- All welcome.
[ m ] -- Mature content.
*
[ archive ] -- Posts that are finished and can be archived by the staff.

*Note: Mature Content rules are posted at the top of the Mature Content forums. Do not view or post within those sections unless you are 19 years old or more and have read the rules for that section.
