Colonial Fleet Service Record

Vital Stats
Name: Tomas Adan Kegan
Nickname: Prefers to be called Adan, not Tomas
Colony: Caprica
Ship: The Rising Star

Physical Stats
Age: 40
Gender: Male
Appearance:
Adan appears to be very pale, even sickly; worse so under the artificial light continually cast on him onboard the spaceships now. In truth, he isn’t unwell, instead he is affected by hypomelanosis, a hypopigmentary congenital disorder or complexion anomaly where his body does not produce enough of the pigment melanin in his skin. Due to that, he has whiteblond hair and very light-grey eyes.

Adan is slim for a male, weighing in at only 75kg or 165lbs. This is only underlined by his height, with his 1,95m or 6’3” giving him even more of a gaunt, gangly appearance. Everything about him looks slightly out of proportion, but nothing more so than his overly long, slender fingers and toes.

He is a very good swimmer, competitively so, and used swimming to keep himself fit and his muscles toned.

Psychological Stats
Concept: Earthy, planet-bound type, uprooted to the stars
Personality Profile:
Adan is a quiet man, more of a listener than a talker. In fact, the one thing his friends used to praise most about him was how good a listener he could be in times of need. By nature, he is a congenial, friendly person, easy to get along with and befriend.

This amiable character trait should not fool anyone though – he is no wanker, or flaker, and does not shy away from making decisions. Even tough decisions. He isn’t one to rush to conclusions head over heels, preferring to think things through and come to his judgment after carefully weighing all the pros and cons of either side. But once he has gone through such a process and has come to a resolution, he will do anything he can to make it come to pass, sticking by his guns even when the going gets tough.

The thing Adan dislikes the most, at least when it comes to social interaction, is not being taken for full – feeling treated in any way condescendingly or what he might perceive as belittling will only get him to dig his heels in and break out his headstrong side.

Adan, deep down, is a very earthy person, who, whenever he was out in space, couldn’t wait to once again feel home soil under his feet. It was as if he had a deeply rooted need to be ‘grounded’, to have his roots firmly planted in the place that had been in his ancestors’ possession for generations. His most beloved hobbies were taking long hikes, horse-back riding and enjoying solitude in nature. To no longer have that one place that kept him grounded and offered him a safe haven to return to is giving him the feeling of being afloat without a lifeline. Not that that impression is really so far from the truth for all of them ... he just fears he won’t ever feel ‘at home’ in space, might even whither away from having had his lifeline cut.

He is also having a hard time adjusting to the sheer crowdedness everywhere, with no way to get away from people. For someone who had enjoyed solitude as one of his most precious experiences, the amount of people crammed together all of a sudden in every nook and cranny borders on torture. His one personal retreat is the small interplanetary shuttle he was traveling in at the time of the Cylon attack.

The ache left by his the deaths of his wife and unborn child runs deep in his heart and gives him a steely edge. It’s nothing that is readily visible, since there really aren’t any people left anymore who know him well enough to recognize the change in his demeanor, but he can readily feel it. It’s there, underlying his outward persona - within him can be found the tightness of a tiger, ready for the pounce, and the sharpness of pain that can only be left behind by losing a part of one's heart forever.

History:
Tomas Adan Kegan and his older twin brother Taro Adan Kegan were born on the eve of the Armistice that ended the first war against the Cylons – and thus, basically on the brink of a New Year, a new age even, for humans just starting.

The first twin was born at 23:54 and the second at 23:59. It was obvious at birth that both of them had been blessed with a very pale skin tone and overly light eyes, and it was soon discovered that both suffered from a complexion anomaly known under the name of Fairfax-Disorder.

Being born the second twin to his 5 minutes older brother Taro Adan, Tomas Adan always had to fight to make a stand for himself, being considered the 'baby' by his older brother Taro. It seems as if in naming the babies their parents had already pre-destined them to this haggling, by stressing their birth rights – Taro meaning 'first born male' and Tomas simply 'the twin'.

By preferring to be called Adan and insisting others call him thus, though, Tomas Adan soon shifted the emphasis onto another vital difference between himself and his brother: Their father, Niall Kegan, had included the ancient word ‘Adan’ in both their names, which translates into ‘earth or ground’. Niall’s intentions had been to anchor deeply into his sons the connection to their ancient home. Adan's intentions took this even one step further: in growing up, it was always him, not Taro, who felt closely connected to his heritage and especially the homesteads of his forebears, so he figured it fitting to switch his calling name to the part of his name referring to their planetary roots. Taro on the other hand had always felt drawn to the stars, and would later make it his profession.

The boys never got to really know their mother, only have vague recollections of a loving voice humming a certain lullaby over and over again, since Aikan Kegan died in a freak shuttle craft accident when the boys were just 2 years of age. She left them with her musical gift, and an uncanny ability to read people, bordering on empathy, or so people say.

Growing up in comparative riches, the boys had a worry-free life, being allowed to pursue their varied interests and hobbies as long as their grades remained up to par. Since both boys were bright, they had an easy time meeting that restriction.

At the age of 16, the twins parted ways. Their father decided it was finally time to allow Taro to pursue his career wishes, and the boy was sent to Picon so that he could become a pilot and follow his dream in what he knew to be his talent.

Adan meanwhile remained on Caprica, feeling he could not yet part with his homelands, insisting he hadn't 'soaked up' enough of their spirit yet to leave them behind. Although at night his eyes traveled the stars and he knew that one day their calling might lure him away from Caprica, he was also certain that that time hadn't come yet. His father was pleased to see his son's connections with his home and encouraged him to do as he pleased.

For Adan that was to follow the need to roam the countryside and the need to help others. His vague sense of empathy gave him the gift of feeling more deeply with or for people, and it was clear to him at an early age that he wanted to use that ability to help those who were hurting. Thus, it was only logical that he should enter the medical field.

When he had completed medical school education, he returned to his homesteads to practice as a doctor there, earning himself the respect and the loyalty of many of the people populating the surrounding towns and villages.

Eventually, he wanted more than just work as general practitioner, so he applied for the most renowned Medical Academy in the system and was accepted. Due to his background as established doctor, he was able to speed through many of his courses. That left him with a lot of spare time to socialize with fellow students, most of whom came to like him for his quiet and friendly manners and his willingness to help out should they need to fall back on his expertise with questions.

It was during that time he also met his later wife, Kiera, whom he married after courting her for 2 years. On their wedding day, he received an offer to be a medical advisor for a major pharmaceutical company, an assignment that would allow him to travel between the colonies and meet up with general practitioners all throughout the system in order to discuss with them what kind of performance they saw in their daily practice from the company’s prescription drugs.

Accepting the assignment, he was not separated for long from his beautiful wife, for she joined him on the job 1 year later after her own graduation. He often got to work closely with her, who had specialized in on-site research into the fledgling field of bio-cybernetics and the possibilities they offered. Their 5 years together on the assignment, traveling from colony to colony, account for the happiest in Adan's whole life.

A few months ago, Kiera quit her space-gallivanting when she discovered she was pregnant with their first child. She returned to Caprica in order to bring her pregnancy to full terms in a safer place than a shuttle traversing between The Colonies. Adan, meanwhile, was still working for the pharmaceutical company, continuing to travel back and forth between The Colonies with the provided shuttle he had long since learned to pilot himself. After his last stop back home on Caprica, it was with heavy hearts that Adan and Kiera parted once more.

And then, when the peace that had been new at his and his brother’s birth had almost lost its 'too good to be true'-feeling, it was shattered. By an enemy that none had expected to ever return. An enemy that had lost none of its fierceness since it had last been encountered. The Cylons were back ... and with a vengeance. Within moments, or so it seems, The Colonies were all but wiped out ... leaving the few survivors scrambling to catch up with each other, regroup and then, get the heck out of there.

Adan’s inter-colony shuttle was found adrift and taken aboard the Rising Star, where it was docked. He is only just starting to realize what has happened, that his wife is dead, his child would never be born ... When the realization first hit, all he wanted to do was curl up and die, just to be able and be with them. But then, at the sight of the state some of the survivors were in, something different kicked in – his compassion. The fact that, deep down inside, he was still a doctor at heart. And he got to work, helping as much as he could.

While the wound his wife's and child’s deaths left is by no means healed, he is determinedly clawing his way back to the friendly and congenial manners others so liked about him, knowing Kiera would have expected no less from him. At times, he is already managing, at least as long as he is in company. When he’s left to his own devices, it’s a whole different ballgame.

Adding to Adan’s grief is the fact that, to his best knowledge, Taro was never recovered after the attack and is presumed to have been shot down by the Cylons.

Sample Log

And there, she was. Perfect. Lovely. Beautiful. Precious. More precious than he’d ever expected her to be, despite all the experience he had with such a thing. He had seen it many times before, but to actually feel it was ... an unbelievable, indescribable feeling.

Perfect.

The love that was racing through his veins at the mere sight was beyond anything he had ever felt before.

Imagine his terror, the mind-numbing, heart-wrecking terror when before his very eyes, set off by a blindingly bright flash of light, his little baby girl began to burn up from without, and within. Withering away, her skin scorching, blistering, blackening, flaking off to leave her raw and bleeding.

An anguished “NO!” tore from the back of his throat as he watched his newborn baby girl writhing in pain, screaming at first, then choking on her blistering tongue, the sudden cut-off sound somehow more torturous than the horrendous sights.

With a gasp, Adan sat up, disoriented for a moment. Where was he? Why did the floor underneath his feet vibrate? Had he fallen asleep in the shuttle’s pilot seat?

And then, it all returned, like waves crashing down on him. The Cylons. Their nuking of The Colonies. The deaths. The billions of unnecessary, senseless deaths. His unborn baby daughter .. whom he had never been allowed to hold, to see, like his dream had frakked with his head and made him imagine. Kiera .. whose death might have been just like the dream had shown. As a doctor, he knew way too much about radiation to not imagine her death vividly whenever he let his guard down on his emotions.

But .. he supposed out of the nearly 50,000 survivors, almost every single one would have such a nightmarish story to tell.

Pushing himself off his shuttle’s desk where he had dropped off to sleep earlier while composing a list of medical necessities and priorities, he wiped the remaining sleep from his eyes. No ... he couldn’t allow himself to wallow, in misery, self-pity or plain old grief even, not now anyway. There was so much to do, when one wanted to secure the survival of those that had made it – and nothing would get done if people didn’t put aside their grief and just got with the job.

He sighed. With the job. Right. Grabbing the list, jotted down in neat, accurate handwriting, he gave another sigh. Get with the job. It would help if he had any clue whatsoever where to start with said job ... as of right now, all he knew was that those that were left had to go on, even if it was far from orderly and organized quite yet.
