Psychological Stats
Concept: Tortured Top Gun
Personality Profile: Kara Thrace is the best there is at what she does and she knows it. She’s brash, ballsy & brilliant in the cockpit. She puts up a tough front of being flippant & unflappably cool, but she’s softer than most people give her credit for. Kara is a staunch believer in the gods. She’s spent a lot of her life seeming to take everything head on, when really she bottles up a lot of her inner demons & hides from the ghosts of her past. Kara holds a lot in, both from the world at large & from herself. She lives very fast & hard, in part, though you’d never get her to admit it, to keep herself too busy, too worked up, too loud to listen to herself, to worry, to let her past catch up to her. Kara has lingering demons from her overbearing mother’s brutal treatment. She instilled a deep seeded belief in the Gods with one hand & abused little Kara with another. A professional pianist, Kara’s father is where she gets her artistic flair.

Never one to let being outranked get in the way of a good fight, Kara’s trust is hard earned & easily lost. She is, however, almost devoutly loyal to Commander Adama. After Zak’s death, she & the Commander met & bonded over their mutual grief, Since they’ve seen & been through a lot together & and have come to regard each other as family. There’s not much she wouldn’t do for Adama. She trusts him with her life & would follow him beyond the Gates of Hades if he asked. Part of this comes from a true, deep caring & respect for the Old Man, part comes from her sense of penance.

Lee, on the other hand, is another matter. Kara & Lee have a compacted relationship. Sometimes they’re terribly close, sometimes exchanging blows, often there’s a lot of teasing & jokes, sometimes it’s more harsh words. Kara struggles to wrap her mind around her real feelings for Lee. They tend to waver somewhere between slightly annoying sibling to potential lover, depending. She respects him, listens; though not always following, what he says. Kara relies on him more than most people in her life & as hard as it is for her to be around him at times, she truly loves Lee. Not that she’d ever tell him that.
Interests/Hobbies: Pyramid, cards, abstract painting, stogies, fast ships, big guns, drinking, carousing & poking Tigh with a stick
History: Starbuck’s early life was one of hardship & conflict. Her father was an artist, a kind & thoughtful soul who showed her great wonders with his pieces of music. It was he who taught her to imagine; her mother taught her other lessons. Kara’s mother a fervent in her beliefs both in the Gods themselves & that this plane of the flesh was one of suffering & toil & those who persevered would be rewarded in the next life, so she suffered & she made her daughter suffer as well. Her parents were often at odds, her father on one side defending his girl, her mother on the other always demanding more. Her parents were often at odds about life in general & how to handle Kara in particular. Many such blowups ended in bruises for the little girl, one of the worst was when she was in grade school; Kara hadn’t snapped to as quickly as her mother had wanted, preferring to play her father’s piano instead. Her mother slammed the lid on Kara’s little hands, breaking each of her fingers.

Later in school she spent more and more time out of the house. Kara played a lot of Pyramid; it was good at staying gone & helped to burn off some of her excess aggression. She was good, so good in fact that she was on the fast track to the pro circuit, until the Gods stepped in & changed her fate. During the final, she was tackled hard to the court, wrenching her knee & killing her career before it began. During her rehab she had to reassess her life in a lot of ways & decided her surest bet for getting out of her house & away from her life was the military.

The Colonial Fleet gave her life a sense of stability that she’d never had. She found purpose & a sense of direction, of responsibility that she’d never had in her reckless youth. Kara signed on for Flight School, diving headfirst into piloting with not just skill, but love. She loves flying, loves her aircraft, her fellow pilots, the camaraderie, the speed & challenge of it all. As a pilot she excelled to the point that she was asked back to Flight School to train nuggets. It was during this time when she met Zak.

Zak Adam came to her, but not as any other student. He was the son of a Viper pilot himself, a hero from the Cylon War. Commander Adama, Zak’s father, was a name in the Fleet. She was reluctant at first, never being what you might call a girlie girl. Never been one of those soft, gushy, need people types. But Zak was different, kinder. He drew from her a passion, a tenderness she didn’t know she was capable of. They saw each other in spare moments, dating behind closed doors & against regs, until; with the coming of his graduation from Flight School, he asked her to marry him. During his last test, Zak blew several of the markers, he should have failed that day, but he’d wanted it so badly, felt so much that he had something to prove to Kara, to his father & brother, to himself. Kara couldn’t bear to crush his dream, so she passed him, despite his sloppy technique. During his first mission after graduation, Zak was killed in flight. Kara still hasn’t forgiven herself, hasn’t shaken the crushing weigh of guilt she carries over his death.

Just before Zak’s funeral, his father, Commander Adama sought Starbuck out. He said Zak had mentioned her in his letters & that Zak also mentioned a surprise, about her. He deduced, rightly so, about their engagement. They held each other’s hand at the funeral & after which met, drank & talked on a few occasions. After she resigned as an instructor not long after the accident, Adama had her transferred to his command where she’s been ever since. During her time aboard Galactica the two have forged a strong bond of mutual interests, respect & love for Zak. He tends to have a soft spot for her antics & has gone to bat for her on a number of occasions, including the morning of the attack.

Not unusually, Kara was at the card game, not unusually, Tigh had had his morning belt, not unusually, Kara twitched him a bit, but most unusually, Tigh toppled the table to come at her & Kara swung. She was sent to the brig for striking a superior officer and, in walking out, was the very picture of unrepentance. It was in th brig where Lee, Zak’s brother had found Kara when he came aboard to participate in Galactica’s decommissioning ceremony. Kara & Lee had become friends when she was seeing Zak & often joked, spend time together, sometimes butted heads. Kara liked Lee & one of her biggest regrets was that with Zak’s death, a wedge had been driven between Lee & his father; who Lee felt was responsible for Zak’s death.

After the initial attacks, Starbuck was released to join the fight. She helped in moving & prepping a squadron full on old MkII Vipers halfway across the ship to help Galactica get into a shooting war. When Lee returned to Galactica after his rescue on & of Colonial One, she confessed the truth of Zak’s death stating “it’s the end of the world Lee. Aren’t we supposed to confess our sins?”. And now… now she’s doing what everyone’s doing. She’s gonna fight’em till she can’t.
