It had been almost two weeks since the Quickstop, and the three girls and their rescued friend had been heading steadily Eastward the whole time. The dessicated remains of an old highway was little more than a gravel road now, surrounded on both sides by wild fields of corn choked by heavy weeds. They had lost sight of the city behind them, and there was no sign of anything in front of them. They trekked onwards, guided only by the little black "E" on Elena's compass.

As they walked, Elena felt tired. More tired than she had in a long time. Her bag felt heavier than it should. She felt hotter than the weather should feel.

She stumbled off into the soft dirt beside the remains of the road.

"I don't feel so good."

She stumbled and let herself fall down. "I'm just gonna take a nap here."

Andrea walked down the road with a dull expression on her face. The remains of the the asphalt crunched under her shoes.

The apocalypse was boring as hell. She wished something would happen. A tiny voice in the back of her head said careful what you wish for.

Then Elena fell.

Andrea rushed to her side.

"I can take her bag." Ben offered, helping lift the heavy bag off Elena.

"Thank you." Andrea said, lifting Elena off the ground. "Elena, you can't sleep yet, I see something up ahead. We can sleep when we get there."

Jade quickly got on the other side of Elena and helped Andrea support her. They slowly continued down the ruined highway. Jade hadn't noticed anything ahead, but now that Andrea had pointed it out, she looked closely at the horizon. There was something, but what?

With her free hand, Jade reached up and felt Elena's forehead.

"She's warm. I think she might be coming down with something other than plain old exhaustion. Let's hope we can rest soon..."

"Bluh, I don't feel good, guys." Elena complained, "Can't we just sleep here?"

She was hot only minutes before, now she felt cold. The temperature was in the mid 60s, but her body could no longer tell.

She was half dragged along by the other two, though she did her best to walk. All she wanted to do was go to sleep.

"Just stay with us." Andrea said, helping carry her friend along.

The place she had spotted earlier was about two miles down the road. It took a little longer to get there with Andrea and Jade supporting Elena, but they made it.

"Are... um... did we... did we go back in time?"

In front of them was laid out a small village, alongside the highway and a creek running under the highway. Well, it used to run under the highway. Now it just ran through an exposed culvert.

The village was filled with canvas tents and teepees. A firepit sat in the middle with a spit hanging over it.

Then a man stepped out of the nearest tent. Wearing normal clothes.

"Excuse me, but... where are we?" Andrea asked quietly.

The man turned towards them in surprise, his hand going to a knife at his side.

"We call it Maize. A little village we built here after we were pushed out of our homes by the aliens." he explained, "Someone said 'go back to roots' and we did."

"Well I'm glad that's working out for you. Can you help us? Like, can we rent a room- a tent, for a night or something?"

"We don't take money here, but I'm sure we can figure something out. Follow me."

The man led them to a teepee a little farther from the road, almost backed up against the cornstalks, and showed them inside.

Andrea and Jade let Elena down onto the makeshift bed as Ben set down Elena's pack near the doorflap.

"I think I'll go see if I can help out, pay for the their hospitality," he said, ducking back out. Andrea nodded to him as he went.

Still crouched next to Elena, Jade turned to Andrea. She was in something of a daze given their strange circumstances.

"I've never seen anything like this place," she said, "well, nothing short of indian villages in John Wayne movies..."

She put her hand on Elena's shoulder and looked back down at her.

"Hey," she smiled, "You can sleep now."

"mmm, Thank you." Elena said, rolling towards Jade and grabbing her. Despite her illness, her grip was like a vice.

She pulled Jade down and squeezed her like a teddy bear.

"Stay with me." She murmured, her eyes closed.

Andrea set her bag down next to Elena's and unstrapped her blanket from the outside. Unfolding the heavy bulletproof sheet, she draped it over Jade and Elena before crawling under it alongside them. She was tired too, and finally being alone with her lovers was plenty to get her to drift off to sleep.

-LATER THAT NIGHT-

Andrea woke up drenched. Elena was like a radiator sandwiched between her and Jade. She rolled away and stripped off her shirt.

"Ugh, I hope they have some way to wash things here." she said in regards to her sweat soaked clothes. She squirmed out of her jeans as she peeked out the tent flap. It was dark out, the moon was all the way up, but a large fire was still blazing away in the central firepit, with several locals sitting around it.

They seemed to be making small talk, but she couldn't hear it from the tent and didn't want to go investigate in her underwear.

Sighing, she went back to Elena, who seemed to be shivering slightly, and snuggled back up to her.

A tiny bit of sunlight shone through a crack in the entrance to the tent. Jade rolled over, rubbed her eyes. Morning. Morning sucks. Over the course of the night, she must have gotten too hot pressed against Elena, because she was no longer wearing her shirt, and had for the most part pushed the blanket off.

The flap at the entrance of the tent flew open.

"Hey," Ben said, immediately stopping when he got an look at the proverbial girl-pile. Jade grabbed at the blanket and held it up to her neck. Ben quickly stepped back out. "My bad," Jade heard him utter from outside.

Elena sat up groggily at the commotion, knocking the blanket off her naked companions.

"Gah." She complained, "I have got the mother of all headaches. Also the father, uncle and mailman of all headaches."

She glanced to either side of her. "Oh, sorry." she said as Jade and Andrea scrambled for clothes.

"Is everyone decent yet?" Ben called in.

"Just a minute." Elena replied.

Andrea pulled on her shirt and pants from the night before, quickly buttoning her jeans.

"Ben, did you find out if they have any kind of shower facilities here?" she asked out through the tent flap.

"They just head downstream and bathe in the creek." He explained. "They'll wash your clothes, too, just give them to the women with the rocks and washboards."

"Convenient." Andrea mused.

Dressed by now, Jade knelt down near her bag and sifted through it.

"A creek is a hell of a lot better than nothing," she said to no one in particular, "and washed clothes sound keen."

"Keen?" Ben asked from outside after a moment.

"Yeah," Jade answered, "I'm bringing it back. What better time than now?"

With the thought of getting them all washed while she could, she looked through her bag for whatever clothes she wasn't currently wearing. Apparently, she had ditched most of her extra clothes over time to make room for other things, because she only found two articles of clothing in her bag; a black T-shirt, and a pair of panties with a little skull on the front.

She shrugged, and stood up.

Andrea dug through her small bag. Her blanket was so bulky that she didn't have room for much else.

She pulled out a pair of clean panties, three socks, and a bra.

She stared at the socks for a moment before reaching back in the bag. She produced a very crumpled camisole.

"Well, it's not really a good travelling top, but it'll do while they wash my other shirts, I guess." she muttered, sticking the odd sock back in her bag, hoping there was another one in there.

Stretching as she stood up, she walked out of the tent right behind Jade.

"Just head downstream, huh?"

"Yep." Ben replied. "The 'laundomat' is right across the road, just head past there."

Elena flopped out from under the blanket and crawled over to her bag. She pulled out her soap and a tightly wrapped plastic bag containing one complete set of clothes, including socks, boyshorts, jeans, a sports bra, and a t-shirt. Two more identical bags we mashed in underneath it, with several smaller ones containing only undergarments mashed in next to that.

Then she reached into a smaller, insulted pocket of her bag, and pushed aside the white paper bag containing three small vials to retrieve a bottle of generic store brand aspirin. She dumped two pills out into her hand before getting up and following her friends.

The three meandered upstream in near silence, pausing only to undress awkwardly to give their dirty clothes to one of the women doing to laundry.

Elena paused, walking back upstream a few feet to suck down some clean water to swallow her aspirin before following the other two a bit further down to bathe.

At first she just found a smooth rock and sat down, up to her chin in the water. The stream was cool, but not cold. It felt nice.

The water, entirely too refreshing and cool for it's own good, was inherently relaxing. Upon entering it Jade breathed a sigh of relief. Then she sat and let herself sink into the water so as to blow bubbles in it. This amused her for a moment. She watched all the little bubbles reach the surface and pop, then she just silently smiled.

That moment of childlike cheerfulness was short lived, but long overdue, Jade thought to herself. It seemed rather out of character, really. She leaned her head back into the water and ran her hands through her hair as she thought about it. There was once a time when moments like this went unappreciated, which now seemed ridiculous.

"Damn," she blurted out, "I miss Nintendo, you guys."

Jade moved herself closer to the other two girls.

"What about you? What do you miss?" she asked them.
