Q:Can my character have any super power?
A: No, there are certain powers that are restricted in the game to prevent headaches for the mod. There is a list of available superpowers here. If the power you want is not on that list and is not taken or restricted, you may ask the mods about it.
Q: Can my character have more than one power?
A: No. Each character may only have one power.
Q: What if the superpower I want isn't on the list?
A: You can ask the mods about the power you want by commenting on the power list post. The mods will reply with whether or not the power you want would be acceptable in the game.
Q: Can I create a power to bring into the game?
A: No, we do not accept player created powers because it would be too difficult for the mods to moderate how the power is used in the game.
Q: How long have the characters had these powers?
A: The maximum amount of time a character can have had their power is since March 2010. The powers did not exist before then and no one was born with their power.
Q: If the characters weren't born with their power, where did it come from?
A: The powers developed after the characters were exposed to a chemical solution that was released into the world water supplies. The solution caused them to mutate and develop powers. The source of this solution will be revealed as the game is played out.
Q: Do the powers have any limits?
A: Yes as no one is all powerful. Using your power will have a physical side effect such making the character tired, sick or cause pain if they use it too often or over stretch what they can do.
Q: Can multiple characters have the same power?
A: Not the exact same power, no but again, variations are allowed. For example we wouldn't allow two characters with telekinesis but we would allow one with telekinesis and one with tactile telekinesis. Why? Because though very similar, those two powers can be used differently or have different challenges. We aren't allowing the same power twice because we want variety and we don't want to have people accusing each other of copying.
Q: Aren't powers like Electrokinesis & Electric mimicry, Pyrokinesis & Pyric Mimicry essentially the same power?
A: In our opinion? No, they are not. They are similar powers which as we state above is allowed in the game but there are subtle differences. For example, a fire mimicry can turn into fire and control the fire that they turn into but he would not be able to control fire from an outside source like a pyrokinetic could. And being made of fire would make him susceptible to a pyrokinetic's power since the latter can control multiple sources of fire. The same is true for electric mimics. They can control what electricity their body turns into but they can't control electricity from say a light as someone with electrokinesis could.
Q: I need more information about my character's power, where can I find it?
A: We do have a power directory that describes the powers in more detail. If the power you're interested in isn't listed yet, we recommend checking out Superpower Wiki, Heroes Wiki and, when it's working, Superpower list. These are the sites we use so players may also use these sites to get more information about their powers.
We would like to note that while some of the super powers are described as incredibly strong, that does not necessarily mean you can use them however you want in the game. We do have rules against godmodding and honestly, no one likes playing with a character who acts like they're all powerful so try not to over do it. If you're not sure about something or want to make sure it's cool to use your power in certain way, please ask the mods here, on the superpower page or through PM.
Q: Can I alter or modify my character's power?
A: We do allow players to make alterations/modifications to the powers but before they can, they must PM the mods for permission and explain why they want to make the alteration. For more details on this subject, please visit this post Here

Q: How old can the characters be?
A: The characters can be from age 15 and up. Characters under the age of 15 are not allowed.
Q: Can I use anyone for a PB?
A: No, there certain PBs that are restricted list here. They have been restricted because they are either overused or the mods personally don't like them. We only allow musicians, actors, models, and athletes to be used as PBs. You are not allowed to use yourself as one.
Q: Can I play a regular human in this game?
A: Yes. Both regular humans and superpowered humans are welcomed. However, if you apply for a regular human that character will stay a regular human in the game. They will not develop a power after being accepted as human.
Q: Can two characters have the same first name?
A: No. While in real life lots of people do have the same first name, we're not going to allow duplicates in the game because we want to avoid confusion. Variations on names however are allowed. For example, we have a Maggie but if someone wanted to join with Margaret that would be allowed but if someone wanted Maggy, that would not be allowed.
In the case of surnames, the use of the same surname is allowed for the most part. For example, if you are playing a family member of another character or it is a very common surname in the country your character comes from. We do encourage players to choose different names but as surnames are less confusing than first names, we do allow duplication.
Q: Do all chars have to be fictional chars - or could they be semi-fictional? Like a real person given powers?
A: All characters must be fictional as this is a original character game, NOT a celeb or faux celeb game.
Q: Can characters be part of the Royal family or any Royal family? Or a politician's family?
A: No, because we feel that could be potentially offensive to people who are from those countries and it would required a large amount of accommodation from the characters & players. As the game is set in Modern day London, it is assumed that the Royal and political figures within our word are the same Royal & political figures within the game.
For example, Queen Elizabeth II is the current Queen in real life and so she would be the current Queen in the game. The same is true for President Obama, Prime Minster Harper, and all other world leaders. So we will not be accepting characters who are royalty or largely known political figures or based upon real life royal families or politicians.
We are willing to allow characters with connections to politics but they should not be world leaders and we reserve the right to ask for revisions if we feel it would too complicated to fit into the game.
Q: Can I change my PB after I've been accepted? If I find someone I like better?
A: Yes, but you have to PM the mods to ask permission first and to let us know who you're changing the PB to. Also the PB change cannot be a drastic change from the description given in the application. For example, you couldn't change Sandra Bullock for Halle Berry. We do allow change but any who asks to change their PB too often (ex: every other month) will be refused. You cannot change your PB to one that is already taken by another player or held for someone.
Q: Can I change my character's job?
A: Yes, so long as it would be realistic and you allow for any training or additional education the character would require to have for that job. For example: If your character is a waitress who decided to go to trade school to study culinary arts and become a chef, that would be fine so long as the player allowed for the training and didn't immediately expect their character to be famous chef overnight. You do have to ask the mods first and we do really, really, appreciate explanation for the change. Doesn't have to be anything complex but we do like to know why you want to make these change and why you think it would be good (or bad) for your character. We want to know that it's not just a whim.
Q: Can I add details and information to my application after I've been accepted?
A: Yes but these additions must be cleared with the mods first to ensure that the changes are realistic and do not completely change the character that was accepted.
Q: I noticed a spelling or small mistake on my accepted application. Do I have to ask before I edit that?
A: No, small edits in terms of spelling or grammar or continuity can be made without having to ask permission.

Q: How does time work in the game?
A: This game operates in real time which means that whatever day it is in real life, that's what day it is in the game.
Q: Can we backdate threads?
A: Yes, just make sure to put the word 'Backdated' or BD in the subject or description line and the date you want the thread to take place on.
Q: Can we be in multiple threads?
A: So long as the threads aren't occurring at the same time, like say one on April 5th @ 5pm and another on April 5th @ 5pm, then yes, you can be in multiple threads.
Q: How long can a thread go on for? Do it have to be finished by a certain time?
A: A thread can go on for as long as the players are active and still interested in playing it. There is no limit to how long a thread can be played as people play at different speeds. Some players are faster and can do a thread in days while others are slower and may play it for a month or longer. Different playing speeds are allowed, even encouraged. However, if a thread hasn't been tagged in over a month and the players aren't on hiatus, the mods will PM to inquire if the players still wish to continue or want it marked dead & archived.
Q: What if I no longer want to continue a thread?
A: If you no longer wish to play in a thread, talk to the other person about wrapping it up. If all players involved are no longer interested and do not want to complete the thread, PM the mods and we'll mark it dead and archive it.
Q: Is smut allowed in this game?
A: Yes but it's up the individuals whether they want to write it. Some are comfortable with smut while others prefer to avoid it or fade to black. Please respect the other players wishes.
Q: Can I have my character converse with an NPC in the communication section?
A: No, sorry. We'd prefer to keep the IC communication section strictly for communication between active characters in the game. If you want to have you character converse with an NPC over the phone you can assume they talked rather than write it out.
Q: Can I use an NPC in a thread? Like have my character talk to one there?
A: Yes. The characters are in a large city, it is perfectly reasonable for them to interact with people who may not be actively played in the game. For example, if your character were to bump into someone on the street in a thread, you could write about how that NPC reacts to your character. The only thing we ask is that if the NPC you wish to use is going to do something that would impact multiple characters or the game, that you please clear it with the mods first.
Q: Can players do narrative one person threads in London/the world sections? Like say I want to write out a short scene with my character and an NPC, could I do that?
A: Yes, players can do narrative threads within the IC playing section if they want. All we ask is that if you're going to do something major with an NPC (ex: kill them), please let the mods know.
Q: Where exactly can you post threads and the like?
A: Threads must be posted in the IC section which I've linked here: Link. As you can see there are a variety of sections. Now, if you wanted to post a thread with your character at a shop then you would have to post your thread in the shopping subforum here: Link. To start a new thread you then click the New Topic button ( Image link).
You'll then see a page link this: Link. Topic title is for the thread title and players use topic description for things like who's taking part, OTA, time, etc. To see the format we use, please have a look at some threads in the game to get a feel for the posting format.

» APPLICATION RELATED «
Q: My application has been rejected. Can I reapply?
A: Yes, you may reapply provided you have made the recommended changes or didn't cause drama upon first being rejected. However, if the mods still feel the application is not up to our standards or there is a problem, you may be rejected again.
Q: I'm 17, can I still play here?
A: No. The game is 18 and over because it allows adult themes. Letting in players who are not 18 could get us in trouble.
Q: The PB I want is already taken, can I still use them?
A: If the player has stated their character has a identical twin in their bio, you may ask them if you can apply for the twin but otherwise, no.
Q: I noticed some applications have 'exemption' in place of an rp sample. What's up with that?
A: When Potentes was getting started the mods offered exemptions to certain players who had been part of Gene Unit and were bringing the same characters into Potentes.
Q: Why are you guys such sticklers on the rule proof line?
A: We're strict on this because the rule proof not only tells us that the applicant has taken the time to read the rules but that they agree to follow them. Without it, we do not have the player's agreement to follow the rules and we feel that is mandatory to have before we even review the application.
Q: How long will it take before my application is accepted?
A: We ask players to allow up for 72 hours for the mods to reply and let you know whether the application is accepted, rejected or needs revision. We will send the notice through the board PM system. Before an application can be accepted/rejected, both mods review and discuss it which can take a couple of hours to a day at least. We try to do this as quickly as possible but we do have lives outside the game and we ask for your patience.
Q: Do you have your own... journal or the equivalent of one in a forum board?
A: You have an equivalent which is your user login or your user name. To create one, you have to register on the board here: link with your character's First and Last name. For Example: John Thomas is an acceptable login. johnthomas is not acceptable, nor is just john or your name. It must be the character's name and for each character you create, you must have a separate login for that character with their name.
The major difference is that you will not have a physical journal for your character to post in. We do know that some players like to write IC journal posts however so we created a section here: Link.

Q: Are plot pages mandatory?
A: No, it's up to the players whether they want to post one or not.
Q: What about thread trackers or phone posts? Are they mandatory?
A: No, like plot pages they are optional. All the IC communication sections are optional.
Q: Is this the same as Gene Unit?
A: No but it is similar and will have similar elements. Obviously the biggest similarities are some of the same characters and both games deal with superpowers but there are differences. The biggest being that the characters are not captives who are forced to be spies but rather regular people who have their freedom and have developed superpowers.
Q: What happened to Gene Unit anyway?
A: It died like many roleplaying games do. Unfortunate but sadly a part of roleplay. The mod of Gene Unit went M.I.A due to personal reasons. We have been in contact with the mod and have her permission to use ideas from Gene Unit for this game. She's now a member of this game but is not a mod.
Q: So is this an X-men roleplay?
A: No. We do have mutants and obviously anything with mutants is usually influenced by the X-men to an extent but this game is for original characters and does not the canon background of the X-men. For example, the mutation in this game is brought on by a chemical reaction, not the x-gene or puberty.
Q: I've never played on a forum before, can I still apply to this game?
A: Absolutely! Everyone has to start at some point and the mods are more than willing to help players who aren't familiar with how forum boards work.
Q: How can I contact the mods?
A: By posting a reply here or if you have registered on the board, you can PM us.
Q: Where can I get codes for plot pages, thread trackers and the like?
A: You can get codes at Caution 2.0 which is an excellent resource site or you check the graphics/code section of the board here. This is where players can post codes/graphics or make requests for codes/graphics.
Q: How big can my avatar be?
A: The site allows for 200px(width)x30px(height)0. Depends on preference which you use. We recommend hosting it off site on with photobucket or tinypic.
Q: Will there be no use for lots of icons/avatars?
A: No, you won't need a lot of icons/avatars. In forums you only get to use one avatar for your account. Because the site only allows users to upload one avatar, many players also include a banner in their signature so to have extra image of their character.
Avatars are generally 150 pixels by 200 pixels but they can go up to 200x by 300x. We recommend players host the avatar images on Tinypic or Photobucket and use the URL to upload it to the board so that it will stay the proper size.
Now, as to how you upload an avatar, once you create a user login and log on to the board, you will see a bolded link on the right side under the game banner called MY CONTROLS. Once you go click that link you'll be brought to your control panel and on the left is a menu list. Scroll down till you find edit avatar settings and that's where you can add your avatar.
Q: I can't make graphics for my character. How do I get an avatar or banner(s) for my character then?
A: The mods and many of the players are handy at making graphics and will gladly make avatars and banners for you if you ask. In fact, we even have a section for such requests here: Link (Viewable to registered members)
Q: How big can my banner be?
A: We allow for 700 since many players like to include links in the banner section. Average size of our player's banners are 500-600 width x 250-300 height. In pixels natch.
Q: How active is Potentes?
A: We consider ourselves a low to moderate pace RPG but it varies between players. We have some players who are faster taggers, some who are slower and others who are in between. On average we have new posts everyday. We welcome all speeds and we prefer players who are comfortable with different speeds. If slower posters are one of your pet peeves or issues, Potentes is probably not the game for you in that case.
