Chapter One Silent Assassins
In another life in another dream by a different name gave it all away for a memory..
With each breath, each heart pounding second, a new pain was to form. A voice now filled the vacant air, like a vision appearing out of nowhere. “Will you stay here with me? Please promise you’ll hold me tight..” A scene now formed; a little boy was huddled in his bed, his blue sheets wrapped around his form, which was clearly visible within the dully-lit room. Another figure was hunched over, seeming to be a fatherly figure. His hand was rested on the young boy’s own two hands; a warm smile laced his features.
“Son. We’re never to far, you’ll be fine. Your mother and I are just having.. One of those days,” His eyes seemed however dark, much more shadowed then the smile that he wore. The father’s hand now brushed the boys hazel hair, his hand repeating this action until the child was to nod.
“You guys always fight. You always raise your voices and fists..” He was cut short by a gentle hush and muffled laughter. The father removed his hand and stood, a stumble to his actions as he turned and looked down, gaze wandering to his swollen fists, small beads of red gashes lined the white knuckles, like scratches on something much more delicate.
“Go to sleep and stop playing, boy. Such things are lies and should never be said in this house.” His tone, now more of a his then a whisper, his once gentle loving gaze turning into a hateful icy ocean. It was obvious now what had happened, the boy’s own gaze now matching his father’s with that same hateful glare, a single nod showing his understanding as the large man turned and walked out, slamming the door behind him. Only was it then that a cry left the boys mouth, tears swelling in his eyes..
[***]
A loud noise sounded, the vision faded. A siren, it’s echoing cries throbbing within the mind of the pokemon. As it continued to go off, her eyes slowly opened, revealing two pale blue hued pools. With a growl, she allowed her feline-like body to leap from the steel table she sat upon, her paws meeting the carpeted ground below. “<It had to be the father. No, It was the father..>” Speaking aloud, the purple feline continued to walk, a slump in her stance as she went. The psychic pokemon, Espeon, re-called the final bit of the vision, her mind focusing on the father’s eyes. It was him, it had to be; there was no other explanation for the mother’s death and the involvement of the husband, the blood on his hands said to much.
A door slid open and the pokemon elegantly stepped through, her odd blue gaze now rising to fall upon a tall man dressed in blue, his back to her. With a purr she leapt onto his shoulder and started around the frame of the chair, her paws gently falling upon the headrest. “<I went over..>” The Espeon stopped dead, her jaws still agape to the scene before her own eyes.
Landing on the table she allowed herself to swing around, ears flicked back with shock. The man’s face was pale, his eyes glazed over; of course, that is if you didn’t notice all the blood, it’s normally red colour now a deep crimson. A trail of it fell from his eyes, almost like tears, his own mouth agape as if he was screaming when whatever happened did occur. Backing up slowly, she pushed herself once more, leaping down to land on the carpeted ground. Running, that was all the Espeon’s body allowed her to do right now, shock now fully imbedded within her system, the scene forever imprinted on the front of her mind.
For a few months now she had been working with the police, her psychic ability being used for various reasons such as insights. Her connection to them had been silent, no one aware of their new tactics, maybe someone had found out and decided to stop them? No, that was stupid. They would have done something less violent, not kill the whole police force.
Paws met cold, smooth tiles now. Her legs slipped causing her to skid, side slamming into a wall. Damn, the wrong way. More panic gripped at her, the siren still sounding in the background; what was that damn thing for? Hell, who cares, right now she just had to escape from here. Eyes were fixed on nothing in particular; everything was one blur of colours and shapes as she ran on, slipping several times before finally coming to a stop. With one leap, her side hit the door, only to be thrown backwards. Locked.. Her gaze fell upon the handle, a purple glow now forming brightly around it’s edges. The pokemon flicked her head aside now, the round knob falling to the ground in a clatter, the door itself flying open with yet another movement.
Darkness, the chill of the wind. It all hit the purple feline at once, her eyes clenching shut to take a moment to adjust, the darkness just as bright as direct sunlight after having spent a few good hours using up her energy on a psychic vision. Right now, however, her mind wasn’t focused on the fact her body was plagued with fatigue, nor the dark eyes that watched her with a twisted show of amusement and a malicious grin.
[***]
Wherever the pokemon travelled, she found the same scene. Blood, death and rotting corpses. Just how long had that vision gone for? How long had she been trapped in her own head? It was all so confusing; her mind was pounding and her chest heaving. As the Espeon now stumbled into an alleyway, her eyes filled with tears, so many things in such a little time. The siren had finally stopped, silence now hung like an ever-lasting mist in the air, it’s once crystal surface now a poison barb.
With a silent sob, she fell to her side and rested her head against the cold wall, which lined the right side of the alley. The Espeon’s purple forked tail flicked, her breaths now small and rushed, one question numbing her mind from the rest of the outside world; what happened? Surely it wasn’t a pokemon attack, every single body was fine apart from the blood, oh yeah, and the fact they’re dead. A choked growl rumbled in her chest, it was all too hard, too confusing. With one final breath, one final realisation, the pokemon allowed fatigue to finally claim it’s prize, her mind falling blank..
A floating feeling, yet strangely a sense of nothingness. Blank and empty, but warm and familiar. A light slowly shimmered into view, many humans moving around without a care, cars and vehicles of all kinds were spread all over the roads between shops and large buildings. A bird’s eye view of the city, as Espeon now looked down her stomach fell; she was standing on an invisible layer of water rippled like water, with each movement a new ripple was sent shuddering down the body of it’s surface. With a small gasp she leapt up, now in a standing position, as more ripples were to make the view of the city crumple and the people to wriggle beneath her paws.
“<Wh..What is this?>“ Her voice seemed to fade, the shapes below not even pausing to look around. Trapped, yet so free. The pokemon raised her paw, tapping the ground before her, only to receive another welcome of ripples, shuddering and wavering beneath her. Placing her paw down, the Espeon once more raises another, finally deciding to walk. Each step was taken with care, her whole body in doubt of the strength of the ‘water’; everything was so real, from the gentle breeze that tasselled her coat to the feeling of whatever the surface was underfoot. Cold and yet like water, yet no droplets or splashes were made.
Her gaze continued to follow the scene below, her steps small and steady as she went, pace never once changing. With one more step everything went black below, the city now blocked out of view by something that moved, something like a shadow. As the next scene came into focus, a gasp left the pokemon’s mouth, a cloud of frost now danced in front her face before rising into the air. A man sat in a normal wooden chair, his arms and legs bound and tied down, his head rested limply upon his shoulder. A large purple mark was visible on the left side of his face, a thin trickle of blood had dried near his nose as if he had taken a beating not that long ago, and his hair was even messy and spiked about. The Espeon now paused, watching as a light was to flash and a door was to open, each scene played out like some show as it went. Another man, paler in complexion, a Mightyena by his side, it’s own legs wrapped in a purple material. With each step they took closer to the slouched man, he seemed to grow more responsive, until finally a moan left his mouth.
“Very good, you’re alive then.” The pale man’s voice seemed to add another chill to the air, a malicious smile sat upon his face. “Now, you’re going to listen to me, and do as I say,” Turning, he nodded to the pokemon and whispered a command before his eyes were upon the cowering man with no escape.
“Now Jesse, I know what you’ve been up to for them, it’s your turn to help me now boy and..” Once more, the scene fell black with nothing more then a gentle toss of the wind.
The Espeon’s mouth fell open, she needed to stop it, she didn’t want it to change, not yet.. Diving forwards her paws hit the water, shattering it. The pokemon didn’t fall, no, she floated. Slowly, as the scene changed to the city once more she hit the ground, her paws once more coming into contact with that cold feeling. As she now started forwards again, her gaze continued to slide from person to person, the same look of horror lined her face. With each step, a new person stopped and turned, making their way towards where she now paused.
Finally, a crowd now surrounded her, not one person moved. As the Espeon went to open her mouth, a voice shook the ground, deep and cold, each word laced with poison so deep it sent a shudder up the crowd, including Espeon who now found herself looking towards the scene behind her. Helicopters, thousands, no millions, now hovered in the air, their blades silently slicing through the air. One man stood, his face hidden by a black mask, like something worn to a masquerade ball, elegant and laced. That same dark, malicious smile laced his face and the same pokemon sat at his heels, it’s own face covered in some kind of mask.
“My good people. Thank you for acknowledging our presence, and for taking the time to await our words,”
Was it an actual choice? Either way, you couldn’t just turn away from these. How a helicopter could hover so silently was amazing, not even a wind had been picked up. But now, the pokemon knew something wasn’t right, her stomach burned with anxiety and her mouth was dry, one cold shudder ran down her spine as the smile grew, the man’s hands gripping the loud speaker had turned white from the tightness, once more raising it to speak.
“Sorry to say, but for that you’ll have to pay a small price. Your souls are all mine, welcome to the patchwork collection..”
With a sickening sound, millions of guns were fired into the large group, grenades were thrown and shells fell to the ground. The sound of war, death and screams. Everyone around the Espeon was falling, their limp bodies littering the ground, many pokemon going down with them, some even trying to attack the helicopters that slaughtered the people so easily. The man who had spoken was now gone, his pokemon with him and the only show that he had been here was the blood. No good, it wasn’t hard to see that’s what he was, but something about this scene wasn’t right, it just didn’t sink yet just yet, but between the shock and horror, the Espeon knew one thing; she’d seen this before.
[***]
“Is it alive?” A gentle voice filled the Espeon’s aching head, a sharp feeling spiked into her side causing a growl to rumble in her chest.
“Casey! Don’t poke it.. The poor thing.” Two people, a second voice now joined in, worry hidden beneath each word. If they were talking, it was either another dream or there were some survivors. Hell with it, she didn’t want to find out.
“Why look, it moved.” “She moved” “It’s a female now?” It was clear an argument was bound to break out. With a sigh she opened her eyes and slowly lifted her head, her gaze falling upon nothing but an empty alley and darkness. A dream, of course. The pokemon allowed her head to meet the brick wall again.
“Hey.. Here you go, wake up again little one.” “She’s not very lit-..” The second, more gruff voice paused, her eyes catching the Espeon’s own. A smirk crossed her face and her hand shot out, reaching for a pat.
“<Don’t touch me. I’m not a pet..>” The reply was rasped but clear enough to cause the two girl to jump. With a groan the pokemon rose to her paws, wobbling as she went to crash back into the wall. As the Espeon fixed them both with a knowing glare, her blue eyes narrowing as the one squatting to her left opened her mouth to speak, only to close it again.
“She’s a psychic pokemon, Casey,” The same gentle voice, full of care and worry. Ah, she knew her pokemon all right. “And therefore can do what other pokemon can’t. By the way, sorry that Casey poked you, oh and I’m Emerald. Are you hurt, do you need some potion or something?”
Espeon shook her head, smiling gently. Potion, she had to be a new trainer, these days everyone had that super potion and stuff. It was never any handy to the pokemon anyway, she wasn’t normally even allowed out of the compound and yet she managed. “<I’m fine, I thank you for the concern, however. Casey and Emerald, new trainers no doubt. I’m sorry, but I have no current name..>” It was always a disappointment, having no trainer left her with no name. Maybe one day.
“<How did you two manage to live? I mean, this attack on the city was full on.. Everyone else.. Died.>” Each word caused a new pain, realisation even. If these two girls, and possibly their pokemon were the only survivors left, how would that work out? Would the man find out and come after th- No, it was bad to think over these things. The Espeon now looked at the girl dubbed Emerald, ignoring the small gasps coming from Casey. Was it not that hard to clutch the fact she could talk? Ah well, small brains.
“Yes. I know, we had.. luck I guess.” ”LUCK?! There’s none of that around here, we could just run fast..” ”As could the other million people being chased by maniacs” Emerald sighed, her eyes closing in her trail of thoughts. As much as she loved her friend Casey, she could get annoying.
“<Look, as much as I love to stand here and watch you two fight, it would be lovely to move and talk once we’re in a safe area..>” The pokemon blinked, a though leaping into her mind. “<A safe area without electronics, too.>” With one more push, she was on her paws, purple forked tail waving about in an attempt to keep her balanced. The Espeon ignored the questionable looks they sent in her direction, either they’d follow or not.
“So why no electronics?” Casey had finally found enough courage to ask the pokemon directly, curiosity already pulling at her chest.
“<Because I said so. You either follow me or stay behind, doesn’t bother me.>” Her voice was harsh, but the message had to be clear. Surviving was now a game, and they were the main pieces. “<One with no rules..>” Her final thought was a whisper, eyes now stinging with the tears and dust that was thick in the air.
The trio trudged along in silence now, their own hearts thudding violently within their chests, each step taken with care not to step upon any dead body or un-used weapon of destruction as Emerald had elegantly pointed out a few minutes before. Edge of town, this was where the Psychic pokemon was going, her mind set on the abandoned mines where she had cracked a serial killers case only a year ago. Oh how it was horrible to think she’d never be able to work with the people she used to anymore, to never hear their voices or see their smirks when stumbling across a clue. Of course, she hated them at times for pushing her past breaking point, but in the end respect was always shown. Respect and gratitude.
“I hate silence..” Casey’s voice echoed within the dead streets, causing a grimace to pass upon both Espeon and Emerald’s face.
“Sometimes it’s for the best, Casey..” Emerald sighed, her hand working to push back some hair that had collected upon her face. As the pokemon noted, it was half there so no one noticed her tears that streaked her face, falling gently to the ground.
“<Sometimes it’s better to cry aloud then let yourself rot away on the inside,>” Espeon allowed her voice to ring out, directing a sorrowful smile towards the girl, who nodded in return and smiled. It was clear that the pokemon already felt a connection with this girl, she was so caring and gentle. How ever did the two opposites become friends? Well, that was a story for when they were safe and hidden.
“Espeon?” Emerald stopped, her head lowering so she could look the pokemon directly in the eyes. The girl’s own gaze matching her name.
“<Yes Lovely?>” The pokemon, too stopped, her body swinging around to leap upon a trash bin, her own gaze now not far from Emerald’s.
“Where ever you are you taking us, we surely won’t survive without food or supplies.. Maybe we could break in up here and take as much as we can?” This now caused Casey to crack up, her hand slapping the other girl’s back.
“Damn Emerald. Never though I’d hear you say that. But it is a good idea, we can use our packs.” As Casey now spoke, Espeon nodded, her gaze properly wandering the two for a first time.
Casey was shorter then Emerald by about a hands height, her face was much thinner though. She wore a pink shirt and short skirt; a black belt topped that off. Pink hair, oh of course. Now Emerald, she was much more formal; a purple shirt was worn, along with a short skirt which was much more elegant then Casey’s butch one. Well, opposites attract, and they seemed to have a good enough friendship, of course, without the fighting.
“<Yes. Go do that, but please be quick. Our destination isn’t far ahead, so grab as much as you can.>” As soon as the words rolled from her tongue the two were gone, leaving the purple feline to herself once more.
As she sat down, her rump met something cold and wet. Blood was the first thought, leaping up she spun around, her gaze falling upon a puddle of water. Oh how she hadn’t drunk in hours, head lowering the pokemon sniffled at it, her chin now lowering to meet its welcoming coolness. As she lapped at it, her mind ran over the dream; it was just a dream, right? Everything about it, the smell, the vibrations. It was all so real and horrible, but so familiar and comforting. How death was comforting, she had no idea. Then came that man, his face hidden the second time round, but why hadn’t he hid it the first time? Maybe the Jesse boy only ended up dead in his own puddle of blood. Maybe even he was part of the twisted event. Well, whatever it was, is, hopefully none of it would continue.. Right?
“Espeon! We’ve got two bags full, plus you could manage with this, right?” Casey’s voice once more cut through the pokemon’s thoughts, her chin now saturated and dripping. Looking up she saw what the girl was talking about, a bucket filled with various objects. Managing a nod, she raises herself and trots over, taking the handle within her mouth.
As Emerald walked out, she smiled. “All set and ready to go, Ranger.” At least her spirit hadn’t been broken, or even her attempt as making them smile lightened the mood ever so slightly.
“<Inred re rae.>” The Psychic pokemon’s words caused them both to laugh, yet even more reason to feel less stressed. Pulling the bucket up now, the Espeon starts forwards, deciding it was best to save her strength and refrain from using her powers any further. To dream of such reality was confusing and draining, her mind had no control over what happened once she fell into a rugged sleep, and so it was best to savour everything you had in case something went wrong. Or this was at least how the Espeon saw it.
[***]
The mine’s grounds were well worn in their time. No pokemon roamed, no dead bodies lay within every distance you look, and it had to be the cleanest spot around. Still, there were empty shells and many marks from where the attack had taken place not far from the same spot, the ground was riddled with holes, and dust still seemed to be settling around the trio. Espeon’s lead was slowly taking them around the edges, upon where piles upon piles of dirt and rubble lay, making sure there was no potential danger with each step she took, her senses higher then ever.
“<Do you see that building? There’s a cave behind it, you have to crawl under the actual building to get to it, but once inside there’s a mere table and a few chairs, so watch where you’re walking and I would suggest you wait awhile for your eyes to adjust and let me give it a quick run down first. I’ve been here before, not physically but it’s to hard to explain, so just trust me on this.>” Her gaze wandered to the two, a nod coming from each. Good, so they were listening. Picking up the bucket she ran forwards, slipping under the building with little effort.
Darkness. It hit her like bricks, slowing to a stop, the pokemon shakes her head, allowing her eyes to as she said to them, adjust. Dawn was breaking outside, and so it didn’t take her eyes long to fall into comfort with the darkness, but then again she could tolerate such little light. Placing the bucket to aside, the pokemon looks around. “<Not much different at all..>” She sighed, it had been horrible what had happened in here only twelve or so months before now, and yet it instantly felt like home.
Now, checking on her way out the Espeon took care to watch for any movement. With no sign of other life, she allowed her voice to ring out, touching each of the girls mind with a gentle whisper. “<Come in, It’s safe.>”
Emerald was first to react, lowering herself down she pulled her bag closer and smiled up to Casey, “C’mon, Espeon said it’s safe,”
The other girl nodded slowly, “But can we trust her? I mean, how does she know so much about this place?”
“Does it matter? Dammit Casey she’s trying to help us.” Her voice was snappy but held her normal edge, causing the pink haired girl to jump. With a sigh she lowered herself down and followed Emerald.
The same wave of darkness hit the two girls, Casey cursing slightly as she ran into the wall. “<Yes. I did forget to mention it starts a bit narrow.>” The Espeon found herself grinning slightly, despite all they’d been through in such a short time span. In return, Casey shot her a glance.
“Gee, Thanks for the warning.” These words also caused Emerald to giggle, her eyes now fully adjusted.
Now as the pokemon led the two further into the cave, she found herself hesitating. After all this time, would the visions continue to come back, would she see the pain this cave once possessed? Her ears flicked back as she now turned, looking over her shoulder at the two girls. It would be a surprise if they knew about the places history, but she’d tell them a little later any who, good campfire stories.
“<So have you guys received you’re pok-..>” The Espeon paused, her mouth agape slightly as she directed her gaze at a figure, it’s own crimson gaze digging in to her mind. The piercing pools left her with the feeling of loss, like her own secrets and memories had poured from a wound, which the gaze created; how could such a pokemon do that? Has she spoken that aloud, for now Emerald countered,
“Better question yet, how could it get in?”
The Psychic pokemon’s chest heaved, dizziness. “<I.. I checked and no one was here..>” Their whispers were pointless, the walls echoed it right to the silhouette who chuckled. A hiss left the pokemon’s mouth as she now addressed the new comer, her voice as poisonous as she could muster it to be.
“<Step out of the shadows, show your face.>”
The crimson gaze wavered, rolling her words over and over within the pokemon’s mind. With a grin, it now allowed itself to step out, a growl rumbling within its chest. A hound, it’s body covered with hues of grey and black. His mouth opened to bare the fangs hidden within, their white surface stained with blood, as were his legs and for the fact most of his body. The three watched as the Mightyena was to then circle them, his deep voice ringing out, “<So you’ve caught me, no where to run.>” His tone was playful, at the same time threatening. The Espeon eyed the hound.
“<What do you want, we’ve done nothing.>“ From that start she could sense something about his was different, she could feel his shadowed aura, but at the same time he felt almost familiar, like an old friend. To this the hound shrugged, his muscles rippling under the shaggy pelt he wore, ears flicked forwards as he finally came to a stop before the Espeon, his tail limply swaying behind him. The Mightyena now lowered his head, crimson gaze once more digging into that icy gaze of the Espeon, his voice slow as if speaking to a moron,
“<You’re rushing things. I never said I wanted anything.>”
Casey listened to the hound’s voice, her own fear rising. She could basically taste the tension in the air, and that was enough to get her moving. Tugging Emeralds skirt, she shot her eyes in the direction they had come. Emerald nodded, taking a step back, her breath now heavy as she felt her heart pound, faster each moment they waited. Rocks, they gave her away. The Mightyena fixed her with his gaze, unwavering. “<There will be no leaving>” He growled, leaping over the Espeon, his jaws agape and fangs flashing. A snarl echoed through the cave as did a scream. The hound’s fangs his base, his jaws closed like a trap, Emerald’s scream stopped, Casey’s own now replacing it. The Espeon swung around, her paws coming to meet a trickle of warmth. Blood..
