Not Paying Attention..., goofing off in the library, open!!

[Natalie Sanders]

Natalie sat idly in her chair in the crowded library. She was at her favourite table, the one in the farthest-off corner, away from all the other tables, surrounded by bookshelves. But for the quiet chatter coming from the other side of the shelves, it might have been totally secluded.

Nat's eyes strayed away from the book she was reading for her potions essay. She was bored. Potions had never really been her strong suit anyways.

She pulled out her wand and quickly conjured up two little figures, made of plastic, and completely flexible. They were in her power, she could make them do whatever she wanted. Not that they cared much, they were inanimate objects after all, but still, she enjoyed that slight feeling of total control.

She began to create backstories for her two tiny figures, which she named Wilberforce and Betty. Wilberforce was a door-to-door encyclopedia salesman trying to sell Betty a full set of encyclopedias. But Betty didn't want to buy them.

Just as Betty was about to unleash her hitherto-unknown martial arts skills on Wilberforce, a sudden voice caused Nat to jump and spin around in her chair to see just who was watching her little puppet show.

Rose rounded the bookshelves and was quite surprised that someone sat in that god-forgotten corner. The other parts of the Library were as good as empty by now, seeing it was a quarter to 8 and they would be closing in 15 minutes. Pulling up her eyebrows, she watched what the girl was doing. Is she... playing with toys? Rose bit back a laugh and instead, admired the fact that the girl seemed to have conjured the puppepts.

"Ahem... Miss?" She said loud. Startled, the girl spun around and looked at her. "I don't mean to interrupt, but they're going to close in 15 minutes. And I still need a book..." She ended, muttering to herself. She turned her back on the girl and started to look on the bookshelve behind her. For once, she was lucky. Not less then 6 books about the Darkness' powers. She immediatly could cross out 4 of them, since they weren' what she was looking for. Hows and abouts of the Natural Dark Powers was the one that fit her search the most fitting her search. She reached up, but to her anger, she couldn't reach it.

I hate being small!!! She cried in her head. Lucky I've got a little advantage instead... She didn't want to check if the girl was looking or not, she just prayed she wasn't. Narrowing her eyes, Rose concentrated herself on book and started tugging at it with her eyes. To her own suprise, the book easily slid off her shelve and landed in her hand. I'm getting good at this...

Nat's cheeks had acquired a slight tinge of pink as she realized that it must look to this girl that she had been playing with dolls, but then she decided that she didn't care what other people thought of her, it had been amusing, and that was good enough.

"Er, thanks, I hadn't realized it was so late," she replied to the unknown girl, who began to try and reach a book high up on a shelf.

Nat jumped to her feet, always eager to help, and was extending an arm to pull the book off the shelf when it slid off of its own accord, almost like magic. ((( )))

Nat's eyes widened. Had she imagined that? No, she wasn't the type to hallucinate. She turned to the girl and asked, "Are you all right?"

Rose spun around, shocked that the girl stood so close behind her. "Sure..." she stuttered. "What would be wrong?" But Rose already had an idea. If she was so close, there was no way she hadn't seen it. Or at least... noticed something odd. The girl had a confused look on her face, so no doubt she saw it all.

Shifting uncomfortable, she knew she had two things she could do. Or she leave it the way it was, though she didn't like the fact that others knew of her abilities to, since she didn't know them very well herself. Or... she mentally confused the girl... But it was dangerous, she had never before really used that power, and things could go horribly wrong...

She decided to let the moment flow... and to see what would happen next. "Is everything alright?" she quickly asked, trying to not look suspicious.

"Er, yeah," said Natalie, frowning slightly, as she tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "I just thought...I mean, I guess my eyes were just playing tricks on me again. Lack of sleep or something, I'm sure. Sorry."

But she was sure she hadn't just been seeing things. There was something odd about this girl, and she obviously didn't want people to know what it was. Natalie thought it best to leave it be for the moment.

She stuck her hand out for the girl to shake. "I'm Natalie Sanders," she said simply, smiling a little.

Rose smiled relieved. The girl hadn't noticed anything, or so she thought. She took her books on her other arm and grabbed the girls hand. "Rose Dee Harker." She introduced herself friendly.

Letting go, she turned to the table and started packing her book in her bag. "So, what House are you in?" She asked casually, her back still to Natalie.

"Gryffindor," Nat said proudly as she returned to her table, where Wilberforce and Betty were arguing over encyclopedias. She pulled the two tiny people apart, and ignoring the glares they directed towards her, looked back over her shoulder at Rose.

"How about you?"

Rose pushed her book in her bag and took out her glass holder. Feeling a headache coming up, she wanted to block out the sunlight to prevent worse. Clicking her bag close, she turned around while swinging it over her shoulder, her square yellow sunglasses on her nose. "Slytherin." she simply answered, her voice carrying the same proudness as Natalie. Giggling, she realised they were 'suppossed' to be 'opponents'. "Hope that doesn't change anything." she said smiling genuinely. "Let's get out of here."

Slytherin...Nat felt a small pang at the name. According to tradition, she was supposed to hate this girl, simply because of the fact that she was a Slytherin. Natalie had never really held much stock by this, although most of her experiences with Slytherins had been unpleasant, she was more the type to give people a chance before judging them.

She grinned at Rose. "It changes nothing," she said. "Unless of course you decide to hex me while my back is turned, or something like that. But then again, I wouldn't be friends with anyone who did that, be they Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or even Gryffindor."

Gathering up her books, she hazarded a glance at her watch. "You're right, it's getting late. Madam Pince will probably be yelling at us in a minute to get out, you know how she is about closing at exactly eight."

Natalie dumped her books, quills, ink, and two protesting figurines into her bookbag, ignoring the wails produced by said figurines.

"So, where should we go?" she asked Rose easily.
