The best archetype is the one you have the most fun with.
Which AT that is I'd say depends a lot on your playstyle. If you like to play solo then one of the more durable ATs might be useful if you don't want to take a degree in Carpet Studies (i.e. die a lot). Of course, my preferred AT is the tank for exactly that reason. If you enjoy PvP, Controllers in particular are lethal in the late game. They can't deal much damage, and are therefore rather slow to play solo with. However, noone can lock down enemies or fling them across the room like a controller. Scrappers and blasters excel at damage, and gameplay tends to be fast and furious with them. The scrappers are fairly tough, regen and super-reflex (SR) in particular (my opinion), though regen is a bit weaker against many opponents while SR fares better. Should a high accuracy enemy come along though, the SR is usually dead unless it can kill the opponent before it kills him. Blasters big strength are that they're a ranged damage dealer - I haven't played them much, though I recall that as long as you could keep your distance and pay attention so that you don't run into mobs by mistake they can take out large groups quicker than anyone else. As for defenders I don't have much of an experience with them. Perhaps Myst can fill you in on them? They generally play the role of support characters though, although a few powersets can manage respectable damage. You will find it easy to get a team. On the whole though, try out a few archetypes for yourself. Just remember that different powersets can make the same AT play completely different. A fire/fire tank will be a bit vulnerable, but is very much on the offensive and burning large groups to a crisp. In contrast, at higher levels a stone/stone tank will take ages to take out a group of enemies. The stone tank will still do it, for almost nothing will be able to hurt him, but it'll take a long time due to how slow he is. Bit of a long post, and there's quite a bit of rambling in it. It's true of anything, try before you buy (or buy and don't complain if it wasn't what you thought it would be
Personally I have really 'got' blasters until I made an elec/elec, right now he is entirely ST ranged attacks, ST melee attacks and the ST hold, usual job is slap the hold, Build-Up, crack off Havoc, if still alive then the lesser of two zaps, then Charged Brawl the held (or a third) and finish with my best zap, if it is multiple foes I tend to crack out Tesla (hold) as much as I can. This is completely different to say a Fire/Fire, who centres best on AoE madness, and is a world away from my Dark/Dark corruptor, who is soft-control, debuff and then cone to death. I enjoy both my Corr and my Blaster (as well as my controllers, my defenders, my tank, my brutes, my doms.....I could go on), because not many 'sets' combined play the exact same as the last one you build. Terms of tanks, Jessica has it on the money, Fire/Fire feels a world away from Stone/Stone, but I've proven many a misconception wrong with my Fire/Fire because I took the set to tank first and damage later. With the changes a while back to the downtime of Healing Flames I feel like a Regen at times with three HFs running. The only time I truely considered rerolling was attempting Positron, but then again who hasn't considered that? Never assume that a defender is there to just heal and buff either, my Trick Archer and Stormlectrics could give a bibble about teammates! Lay down the rain of debuffs! -------------------- @Drakmarth/@Drakmarth2
