Where do you like to start when you write a list? Do you think, ok, I need an HQ and 2 Troops, then work from there? Do you say hmm, what will be really nasty?

I'm just curious. I know I have already fallen into a pattern. I almost have a default unit setup in my head, and almost forget to tweak them differently. I kind of bought my models with an overall army look in mind, and I base everything on that. I'm going to try a crazy winged horde soon, just to shake my army up.

That's actually an interesting question. I generally think about the nature of a particular army then build a theme around that. eg; Grey Knights to me are ultra pure in their doctrine so I built a pure GK army, no allies.

I usually decide on a play style, put in the units that fit that, then go fill in the gaps from there.

I originally wanted a Soviet style IG army, so I made sure I had plenty of cheap infantry units in before I started adding in tanks and other things.
I designed my (normal) Tyranid army to be melee, so I was sure to have several melee monstrous creatures and plenty of genestealers, then filled in the gaps in points and models on hand with gaunts, Warriors, what-have-you.

And at least with my IG I have fluff based around my particular regiment, so I try to keep the units to the fluff. Like right now they're becoming renegades after surviving a suicidal mission, coming back and killing their commander as vengeance, so I'm basing my army around the two most destructive and all or nothing weapons the IG can field: plasma and flamers. Plus a decent amount of veterans to represent them fighting for several months and being drastically reduced in manpower, but those they do have being very good at what they do since they'd be dead otherwise.

I am a new player but generally im more interested in model and fluff then how "strong" the army is point wise. For me its more of a fun aspect so i usually end up picking elites or heavies first cause they tend to be the more unique or interesting

I say: Hmmmmm, I want to have x weapon and x tank, backed up by x and x with my 2 tac. and fill in HQ (normally a term. chappy). I then adjust to meet the points requirement. I really have no exact method.
