Orchid Wine
A deliciously dark fairytale

Saint Bard is a country in an alternate universe which reflects our own. A decadent lifestyle by the wealthy few has broken the backs of the poor multitudes with taxes. Now young upper class men and women are mysteriously disappearing, and no one knows who's doing it. Part Les Mis, part Grimm brothers, part murder mystery, Orchid Wine is a deliciously dark fairytale.

These are only suggestion characters, ones that have already been worked into the plot. These are people that are needed to move the plot forward, and to add twists. Feel free to create your own character and incorporate them into the plot your own way.

If you're interested in playing a premade plot character, post in this thread with the code we've provided.

PLEASE NOTE:
  1. The only information the admin have about these characters is listed below. For example, I have no idea what past grievance the merchant committed against the triumvirate. That's why it's important for you to give us a few ideas and details about the characters, because this plot is very much influenced by you.
  2. You may register with the character's name, but if you don't get the part, your account will be deleted. (This rule only applies if the character already had a name. If they don't, you may do what you like with your account)
  3. The admin will accept you based on BOTH your post here and your official application! We'd like to have all the material ready for consideration as soon as possible--so don't be hesitant to post your full application before or simultaneous to your post here. If you would like feedback, please let the admin know.
  4. After your character has been accepted, the contents of your post here will be PMed to you for your records, and your post here deleted to make room for more.
  5. These characters are simply starting points for a plot. If you'd like to be involved in the site plot but want to make your own character, I suggest that you go to this thread and get involved in the discussion.
  6. Member character requests (Member-created characters that are needed for their own subplots) can be found here. Don't forget to check that list! You might find something more to your liking.
  7. Make sure you post your regular application within three days. We only reserve plot characters for three days.
  8. Characters in red are needed as soon as possible.

  • Mysterious Orchid Wine Maker: Their motives are unknown. No one can catch them. Their identity is a complete mystery. Whoever they are, they're spending their time making super-potent orchid wine which either induces euphoria, causes blackouts, or kills, and putting it out into the market.
  • Merchant_____ _____: Middle class wine merchant whom the government chooses as a scapegoat because s/he is hated by someone in the triumvirate. The past grievance earns him a trial with the rulers of Saint Bard.
  • The Sleuth: A somewhat quiet and reserved University student whose best friend is one of the people who disappears without a trace. Against the university and triumvirate's wishes, he decides to look further into the mystery.
  • Foreign Dancer: Raina Lyio helps the university student investigate the disappearances after she sees something strange.
  • The Triumvirate: The three rulers of Saint Bard (Soldier-type_____, Scholar-type______, and Business-type_____). They rule with the help of aides (people who do the actual work) and the Bardian council. The council serves as an advising board and propaganda machine rather than a viable branch of government. The Triumvirate didn't try to stop the slave trafficking until one of their children was taken.
  • Soldier Triumvirate : The youngest, most ambitious leader of the country; they have an extensive background in the military. Their family has co-ruled for several hundred years.

  • Business Triumvirate: The money-conscious and most cooperative; they are the co-leader of the country that's best at making speeches and appeasing the people. Their family has ruled since Saint Bard came into existence.
  • Poisoned Noble (Slavery): They are the only child of Soldier Triumvirate _____. They drink some of the tainted orchid wine, are captured by the slave agent, and sold to Lord Burrough.
  • Sheriff _____ _____: A middle class man who first started investigating the disappearances after his son disappeared. He'd almost given up when Super Sleuth came along.
  • _____ and Wilhelm Grimm: Two brothers who write for an underground newspaper with an illegal printing press. They have a taste for strange happenings and are very interested in the whole business of disappearing people.
  • Lady _____ Doran, The Gold Digger: Lady Doran is a young widow who owns the second largest farm on St. Bard Island. She's been flirting with Lord Burrough for years; she's extremely keen on merging their lands to create an even bigger monopoly.

Character Name:
Foreign Dancer - Raina Lyio

Ideas and Description:
Standing at nearly six foot makes Raina stand out from the crowd a bit, but that isn't the only thing about her that's fascinating. She has hair the deepest shade of black that, when the light catches it just right, appears to be a midnight blue. Though the tresses reach almost her hip when it's wet, it has a slight wave to it, so that when it's dry it hangs down only to her waist. Dark, playful, emerald green eyes peek out from behind loose strands of her unruly hair, matching nicely from her olive-tone skin. Her physique is shaped mainly by her day-to-day life, making her look graceful, yet with a hidden power waiting just under the surface.

____________________________________

What was it about being a Weyrbrat that made a person perfect for kitchen duty? The girl sitting cross-legged on the floor sighed, and set down the rag on the lip of the rather giant bowl she'd been cleaning. It was exactly the same as the dozens of other bowls stacked in neat piles scattered about the room. Cilnah held up her hands for inspection. "I look like an old person," she muttered, wiping her decidedly wet palms on her bottoms. After yet another sigh, she pucked up the rag and took two swipes at the grimy bowl. "I though that coming here would get me off of kitchen duty, but I'm an old prune more now than I was at the old Weyr." She was complaining to herself, of course, as she usually was, but that didn't bother her too much. What did give her concern was the fact that, at least back then there had been children to get her out of washing dishes every once and a while. But not here. Her it was dishes, and stirring the soup, or peeling vegetables all day.

It'll all be worth it one day, she kept reminding herself, though at the moment it did little to alleviate her irritation. There was a clutch now though, she thought with a grin. Another chance for her to Impress. She still wasn't sure what it was that her brother had said to convince their mother to allow her to come to the future on the back of his beautiful blue dragon, but whatever it was, Cilnah was in his debt, and willingly so. She'd always been the weird kind who'd gotten along with her siblings. Speaking of which... She hadn't seen N'yrl in a while. She wondered what he was up to. The distracted girl stood, gleaming bowl in hand, and rested it on the nearest stack, watching as it wobbled precariously. It was the smallest pile though, and she wasn't about to start a new one for just one dish.

"Finally!" Cilnah grinned, proud of the job she'd done. Her hands felt like they had blisters buried deep under the skin, but that was a feeling she was used to by now. She wiped her hands once more and turned to the roaring fire in the hearth. That was the second of her kitchen duties. It was her job to make sure the fire didn't go out under the giant pot. It have contained soup at the moment, but the girl could have sworn it was big enough to take a bath in. Which is exactly what she wanted to do after this grimy experience. After poking the fire twice, she tossed on a bit more fodder, and stretched her hands over her head, giving a soft groan when she felt her shoulders creak and pop. "I've been bent over those blasted bowls for too long," she complained to herself. But at least it was done. No more dishes for a few days at least. That was a bright spot in the rather dull existence she was leading right now.

Walking out of the cooking den, Cilnah flopped down on one of the many benches that were scattered across the eating area, and folded her arms across its smoothed, if ragged, surface. "Kitchen duty bites hard," she complained, resting her head on her arms, and slowly closing her emerald eyes. For a moment, she rested there in silence, until a determined, insistent pounding forced her to reach up with her right hand and pull the restraint from her hair, letting it fall loose to her waist and alleviating the slight headache that had started nearly an hour earlier while she was bent over the dishes. She forced her fingers through the waves, then carefully sunk her teeth into the band and slipped it onto her wrist. Her hand fell back to the table with a soft thump, followed by a long sigh. "I wonder how Mom and Dad are doing?"

She found her thoughts going more and more back to her family, wondering what was going on with them, though she knew technically they weren't alive anymore. It was many, many turns in real time, but in her mind, it was only two turns since she'd hugged her smallest sibling good-bye. She still held out hop that one day the little one would show up on the back of a straggler dragon, but as she kept telling herself, that was unlikely to happen. A heavy sigh pushed from Cilnah's chest, and she shook her head from the confines of her arms. "Give it up girl," she whispered to herself, and allowed her mind to go blessedly blank, enjoying the silence of the empty kitchen.
