[THE ROAD SO FAR]
"You guys aren't supposed to be here. You're not in this story."
"Yeah, well, we're making it up as we go."
- Chuck and Castiel
The world used to be a much simpler place. Vampires were thought to be extinct, salt-and-burn ghost hunts were the usual order, werewolves were a rare bit of excitement and demons only possessed about three or four people a year. Civilians walked around blissfully unaware of the evil lurking all around them and the small, surly, fragmented but effective nationwide network of hunters generally had a handle on the things that went bump in the night.
But then the demons started working overtime: killing hunters, kidnapping people, test running some kind of demonic virus. Nobody was quite sure what the end game was. Soon enough the demons masterminded the opening of the Devil's Gate in Wyoming, unleashing an army of their kind and freeing Lilith, the first demon. From there things turned apocalyptic. Lilith and her followers were going to release Lucifer from his cage in the deepest pit of Hell, and he was going to bring on Armageddon.
To do it they had to break the 66 Seals, and despite the best efforts of a small group of hunters, the demons won. Lucifer's cage door opened and the Devil himself rose to walk the earth. With him came earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, hail storms and wildfires. The world was thrown into chaos. Lucifer set the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse upon the world. The dead rose. People were killing each other and themselves. Things looked grim...
...Until one day it all stopped.
Few people know what really happened, but a few plucky hunters and a rogue angel - Team Free Will - managed to shove the devil back into the cage and end the apocalypse. Though they saved the earth, they did not restore order or balance.
The nearly-there-but-not-quite-apocalypse knocked something off-kilter here on earth. Creatures started acting differently. Over the past year, monsters that haven't been seen in hundreds of years are suddenly awake, in great numbers, and hungry. Creatures from Greece, Japan, Eastern Europe and other corners of the globe that shouldn't have left their home borders are suddenly turning up in the continental United States. Most worryingly, the Alphas - the progenitors of entire species of monsters - are sending their 'children' on a recruitment drive. The monsters are building an army, but why? Their motivation remains shrouded in mystery, but two words keep coming up in the search for answers: Purgatory and Mother. Purgatory, where the souls of all things nasty, sharp and hungry go when they die, was the target for Crowley before his demise. But who is Mother, is she calling the shots for the monsters and if so, what is her end game?
Earth is not the only place in chaos. With Crowley, the self-proclaimed King of Hell, dead, the demons are leaderless and the Pit has dissolved into anarchy - even by Hell standards. Up above, Heaven is embroiled in a bloody civil war between Raphael and his followers, who wish to use the weapons of Heaven to put the apocalypse back on track, and Castiel and his followers, who wish to return Heaven to order and leave earth alone.
The apocalypse may be over, but the fight is only beginning.
